I don't know if space battles will be front and center. Of course it's possible, even likely, but from what I've gathered it seems like an infiltration/heist type movie, and I'm not sure how they'd fit tons of space combat in such a film.

My source (the link below) is the official Star Wars site so I think I am OK with posting about this stuff, correct EHT ?

I just figured, y'know, 'Rogue' seems, at least to me, a group of fighter pilots? There's gotta be a space battle somewhere, this is Star Wars after all. I enjoy parallel narratives, so maybe there's a fight to distract the Empire so the 'heist' group can do their work. But like I said, I've been wrong once or twice!

Obviously we can't have a SW film without some sort of space battle, but I agree more with Darkslayer. I think it will have more of a heist thriller story and tone, which I am very excited about. I really think Rogue will be a pleasant step away from the Jedi focused story. But the idea of a space altercation to distract the Imperials does sound very plausible!

I just hope we also get a gritty war movie from an Imperial perspective at one point.

I like this “anthology” and “saga” method.

    1. Anthology: a published collection of poems or other pieces of work.

    1. Saga:a long story of heroic achievement, especially a medieval prose narrative in Old Norse or Old Icelandic.

So you’ll have the Star Wars Saga, and then the Star Wars anthology. I like it.

Imperial perspective would be cool. What do you mean by gritty though? Can you give me an example of a film you'd like to see it share the same tone as?

Yes, people often have different meanings. Some people think it means violent or adult. Others just think it means that the heroes/stories aren't as black and white as the Saga films.

Some people think TESB is gritty. Others don't.[face_thinking]

I'm not really avoiding spoilers for this movie but am cautious, especially with news mixed with Episode VII news. So far these "spin-offs" don't come across as that necessary but will surely be neat to watch. So far this movie just seems like a sort of alternative Episode IV.

I'm thinking that this is something either Post-ROTJ or post TFA.

While I can see the appeal to have a movie about something pre-ANH, I want the stories to move forward not backwards. In general I don't like prequels, as you already know the characters and it become yet another origin story.

Another issue is that these sometimes lead to plot-holes.

From what I've read, I just don't understand the motivation of investing so many resources into making a movie about this.

Well if TFA is a runaway hit with people that are not SW fans then it's a brilliant plan.

You get them excited about Star Wars then you have a SW movie every year or so.

This is not far-fetched. It's the same approach they've taken with the Marvel universe. You have the stand-alone movies for Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, then the big-one-Avengers. Then more stand alone and off-shot Marvel stuff (Guardians of the Galaxy).

If Guardians would've tanked then no-harm-no-fault. They still have the others in the pipeline to continue. If it takes off (like GOTG did), then you can do more movies of that.

    Now back to Star Wars.

You get Rogue One. This may be a story about a Rebel pilot or a Rebel fighter wing squadron. It may be Top Gun with X-Wings, A-Wings, Y-wings, B-wings and Ties on the other side. If it's not great at least it may show the GFFA from a different perspective. Maybe it will be based on Biggs and/or Wedge, who knows. The point is that it's a win-win. By not having to use big names (actors and such) to do a smaller movie they have the upside to make lots of money. If not then at least they keep Star Wars in the public's mind until the next big Star Wars film.

Again just look at how they're managing the Marvel Universe. So far, so good, so I'm optimistic.

(No mention of Anthology in the header, which is interesting)

First cast picture from Rogue One:

Some cast info, and other things:

"Lucasfilm announced today that their first film in the new standalone Star Wars stories series, Rogue One, has begun principal photography. Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) is directing Rogue One, which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. The film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.

The filmmakers have assembled a stellar cast, including Felicity Jones, nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in The Theory of Everything; Diego Luna, who was featured in 2008’s Oscar-winning Milk and 2013’s Elysium; Ben Mendelsohn, recently nominated for an Emmy for his leading role in Bloodline and co-starring in the upcoming Mississippi Grind; Donnie Yen, Hong Kong action star and martial artist who starred in Ip Man and Blade II; Jiang Wen, who co-wrote, produced , directed and starred in the award-winning Let the Bullets Fly and Devils on the Doorstep; Forest Whitaker, recently featured in the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels’ The Butler and winner of an Academy Award for his leading role in 2006’s The Last King of Scotland; Mads Mikkelsen, who starred in The Hunt and was the memorable villain from 2006’s Casino Royale; Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in Rogue One, stars in the soon-to-be-released Con Man series and Trumbo, which releases this November; and Riz Ahmed, who was recently featured in Nightcrawler and starred in the BAFTA-winning film Four Lions.

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”
Veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who shares a long history with the Star Wars movies, dating back to the mid-1990s, originated the idea for the movie. Allison Shearmur (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Cinderella), John Knoll, Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) are executive producers. Kiri Hart and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) are co-producers.
To create the lived-in, realistic feel of Rogue One, Edwards chose Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan) to be his special effects supervisor. Star Wars and Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang (Star Wars: Episodes I-II, Forrest Gump) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for the Harry Potter series, Edge of Tomorrow) will be the production designers. Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (World War Z, Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (Prometheus) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the Harry Potter series, Saving Private Ryan) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for Kingsman: The Secret Service, Jupiter Ascending)."

Definitely looks like a gritty war movie; I hope it has a Star Wars "feel" to it, some good suspense and trademark humor.

Kind of disappointed that Felicity Jones seems to be the only woman. I wonder if there will be any talk about her breaking proverbial glass ceilings while moving up the ranks, being one of only few women in the Academy, the Empire making it harder for female pilots to be trained, etc. There are ways to make her status as the "only one" work I suppose, and she does look badass.

    A Star Wars STORY?

So I guess 'Anthology' was a too hard word for some people to learn, so they had to trim it down[face_phbbbbt]

It doesn't matter too much to what its sub title is I guess, A Star Wars Story is simple enough for anyone to grasp. I'm very intrigued by these standalone films and if they will be a departure in terms of their tone, look and feel to the trilogies. I'm looking forward to them.

Star Wars story sounds lame...anthology was perfect, so why change it?

I hope it looks and feels like a Star Wars movie. Because if not, then why bother making these spinoffs? Why don't they just make some other scifi film instead?

'A Star Wars Story' is definitely a huge downgrade from Star Wars Anthology. Ah well, it's the quality of the actual film that matters. This one looks like it has a lot of potential.

Yeah, I'm hoping cooler (studio) heads prevail and they go back to Anthology. "A Star Wars Story" sounds lame as all get out. I keep thinking of some kid with his tongue frozen to a pole with that title.:p

Agreed. "Anthology" has so much more class... and gravity... than "a story".
