Buff, NY Working with Worbla

What is the material sandwiched between the layers of worbla, and how are the layers affixed to one another?

 

Check out some of the tutorials posted earlier in this thread. The layer in between the two Worbla pieces is just regular craft foam. You can buy it in a variation of thickness. The worbla is a thermoplastic. When heated, it becomes pliable when it is heated, and adheres to itself. In one of the early pictures you'll see one side is shiny, that is in adhesive side. Generally you apply the two pieces with the shiny. Side facing each other.

Just ordered some worbla for a costume component. Should be interesting, having never worked with this material!

 

My piece of worbla just arrived. Strange stuff. Looks like a giant fruit roll-up. Made me hungry.

When making a smaller object, such as a belt buckle, do you have to :sandwich" two pieces around craft foam, or can the foam be omitted?

 

The foam can be omitted but I would recommend a double layer of worbla. Otherwise it will look like pork rinds! .

be wary with that one. i had it awhile ago, went to use it, turned it on and off twice, then it shorted out and began to smoke.

 

So you're telling me I should save my receipt?

Spend the $20 and get one at Home Depot. I've used mine for many, many hours and projects and have never had a problem.

Started with making patterns for the boy. Now, to decide if I should use regular Worbla or black worbla for his armor.

 

have i told you about my worbla smoothing technique? works for both black and regular. when the piece you are making is done i heat it up just a bit and rub the surface with wax paper. i did this with the reverse blade katana i just made for a commission and it came out insanley smooth! no need for gesso or wood glue! i did it on my new revan bracers as well but i wanted some of the texture to come through. but it still works just fine for the regular worbla as well! just make sure when you are rubbing with the wax paper that it stays flat and wrinkle free or else those will transfer and imprinter into the worbla.

 

So I decided to go with the Worbla's Black Art for Jonathan's Manid and had to check out a quick tutorial.
