When I had the option of downloading Broken Age for PC or PS3, I wanted to point and click, so I went with PC of course.

there was a moment there where it wasn't clear if panasonic or sony would come out on top in that gen (was that also when the dreamcast came out? i forget). but for me it was a good purchase. there were three or four games that i really enjoyed playing, then i sold it to some kid for the same price i paid for it. it wasn't clear yet that they would fold and i threw in the games i had so it wasn't like i totally ripped him off.

I had two good beat-em-ups on the Atari ST - International Karate +, and Barbarian. The latter had sounds sampled from Red Sonja and had the best combat move of all: the flying head-chop. The ability to end the match instantly by perfectly executing this move made for some really tense games.

3DO was a year or two before Playstation. Dreamcast came out much later (1999).

Seconded. For example, Nick Valentine's random-ass cases were some of the writing high water marks for me and they're easy to overlook and completely outside of the scope of the main plot.

Yeah, the big thing with Dreamcast was that it launched right about the time the PS2 had been announced and that more or less killed it dead in the water.

Here's 14 more minutes on the subject than anyone should reasonably care about!

A couple of my favorite quests were the U.S.S. Constitution and the Cabot House one. Not coincidentally both involved choices that had actual consequences-- and not like, say, the four-option dialog that basically has you say "yes" four different ways. There are also a lot of locations that quests don't send you to, such as Gunners Plaza (maybe radiant quests are supposed to send you there, but I don't know), and there are major locations such as Vault 81 that you'd completely bypass if you just do the main quest.

Oh, yeah, Vault 81 was rad. You'd think I'd remember to namedrop where I picked up
permanent debuffs and one of the more philosophically intriguing vidya romances I've encountered
but there are just a lot of fun optional areas.

oh i guess i must be thinking of the saturn. i guess the 3DO and the playstation always seem closer in my head because when i bought the 3DO i would go look at games at the game store down the street from my apartment and they already had a japanese playstation and were constantly playing tekken on a huge projection tv.

Ender, how about I wipe out my entire list and just say Portal 2. Is that thrifty enough? Also, I really thought that was already typed into my list.

Another major problem the Dreamcast had was that it used CDs right at the same time every computer started including CD ripping and burning software. It was way too easy to just make a copy of a game for your friend, so there was really no way to profit on the games on a large scale. RIP.

So... that brings us to "what consoles and handhelds do you/did you own"? I never sell or get rid of any consoles, so my list is all ones I still have, to the horror of my parents who are hanging onto a lot of them for me since they won't all fit in my apartment:

    NES
Gameboy Original x 2 (grey one and a black one)
    Genesis
Sega Nomad (am I the only person here who had one of these? I love that Nintendo NX is just a Nomad 20 years later)
    N64
Dreamcast x 2 (What? I thought mine was stolen from storage along with other stuff 2 years ago, so I got a new one. Then found the first one)
    Gamecube
    Wii
    DS Lite
    PS3
    PS4

And many PCs along the way.

*Awaits the boring "I only play PC games" lists.*

Yeah, I know, it's a very uncommon opinion. I think some people found it too short or possibly too easy (between all the bombs you could craft and all the Master Assassins you could call down from the sky to do everything for you... though I thought that was all a blast).

The thing is, I'm not as picky about actual gameplay as some people are. So those are not my focal criteria. You may notice most of my list is games with strong stories. For me, Revelations has the best story of any of the AC games so far. We get to see Ezio, whom we've known since he was a dashing but stupid young man, ride off into the sunset so to speak. We see him as the consummate Grand Master, while still being his lovable self. His love story is good. And his explorations into Altair's past are fantastic, considering I always loved the potential of that character and his setting, they just hadn't figured out the game yet for his installment.

Overall, Ezio's story arc is one of the few in games that I feel was really satisfying. And then "Embers" is a great little short film to finish it all off. But yeah, mostly I'm going by the story and experience, and I really loved this game. It manages to bring Desmond into the mix in a nice way, too, so you get this parallel between Altair/Ezio/Desmond that is fitting. It might have actually been the first game to make me shed a tear (though tons more were to follow... hello Last of Us).

Finally, I really loved the setting. The Ottoman Empire just made for some really interesting atmosphere, historical storylines, and was a nice change of pace from being in Italy for a few games. Overall, I just really enjoyed the experience of playing this game the most of any of the games, particularly from a story perspective. Though I know most people's #1 is Black Flag because of the unique and incredibly fun gameplay.

Really, I wonder... does anyone here play mobile games? Because I hate them. Like, just completely and utterly loathe them. They and their popularity make my blood boil. Sure, I should say that people should just enjoy whatever they like and I shouldn't care if Candy Crush is the most popular game in the world... but screw that. They are the worst.

I've tried playing a few of the popular mobile games and I largely just don't get them. If I need a way to pass the time on my phone, I read BBC News or Cracked. Or maybe do a trivia game for a bit, though I got bored of those quickly as well. But I just can't at all get into mobile games. They bore me to death, then annoy me after a short time. I think I just need for games to have interesting stories (Telltale is my soulmate), so mobile games just seem like being a monkey hitting a button more than a true involving game experience.

This has been commentary from the 70 year old man inside my head.

Eh, I think that gets overhyped as the Wii and DS Lite were also notoriously easy to pirate on and "merely" had deficient software sales as a consequence (Although there were other factors at play there what with an artificially expanded audience inflating the hardware sales relative to what more traditional games software can sustain, etc.). There's also at least a bit of it that came down to Sega themselves pulling the plug before there was a "real" need to.

Console/Handheld List, not including computers and whatnot, in order by acquisition:
    Gameboy
    Gameboy Color
    Gameboy Advance
    Gamecube
    Playstation
    Playstation 2
    DS Lite
    Wii
    Xbox 360
    3DS
    Playstation 4
Playstation TV (well after it ever made sense to buy one)

Just assume those Gameboys were supplemented with computer games and old-school SNES emulation - back when unstable ZSNES was actually something you used! Madness! These days it's all SNES9x and higan, and slick multi-emulator frontends, you kids don't even know how good you have it, we had to walk fifteen miles through the snow and websites splattered with porno ads to get illegal dumps of Earthbound, and then our parents thought we'd been looking at porn so we'd get grounded, and we were grateful for the opportunity!

I hate the blatant scam "freemium" model, the fact that most popular mobile games are bad copies of older games, and the whole "dumbing down" of the game market for people who want to play for ten minutes on the subway. But I can't say I haven't sat in a waiting room playing the completely free version of Angry Birds.

I also hate mobile for what it did to the SNES Final Fantasies (which are also the Steam versions, infuriatingly enough). ****ing ugly graphics with nonsensical perspective.
