    Cthulhu f'htagn... ;)

In all seriousness, that does indeed sound like a sucky day—been there in terms of the technicolor rainbows, but with excruciating head pain instead of a bad thigh. Found out later that it was from taking ibuprofen; I'm allergic to the stuff, apparently. You have my sympathies.

"Fhtagn" isn't part of Cthulhu's name, nor does it have an apostrophe. It's from the chant "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn," which translates to "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." "Fhtagn" is suggested to mean "waits" or "dreaming," though some translations suggest that the chant should be read backwards.

So, saying "Cthulhu F'htagn" is just saying "Cthulhu waits/dreaming/in," with "fhtagn" being misspelled.

If anyone pissed off a deity today, it was probably me. My friends and I had a potluck dinner this evening for all our friends who are grading this year (people are taking off as soon as their exams are over, so we had it before the last day of classes, which is Monday). But we had it at the church. AND then we ate desserts left over from a funeral (perks of living with the pastor's kid - not the first time we have done this). AND THEN we had Humans VS Zombies Nerf wars in the sanctuary, WITH epic post-apocalyptic music playing.

    It was great fun.

Oh, our "last stand" on the sanctuary stage was like something out of a movie - the lights were off and the sun was almost set through the stain glass windows. The music was blaring and all our guys "up top" (on the balcony) were being overrun. All the humans got turned into zombies because we ran out of ammo before time was up, but it was so much fun. I was going to be antisocial and not go, but I am very glad I did.

I also got convinced to go to this camp at the end of the month. Apparently it will be more accessible than I thought and I very old friend of mine will be leading the study that I will be doing, so I think I am going to go.

I've been hitting a major art block lately. Gonna get some sleep and attempt to draw tomorrow.

Though, today we had neighborhood yard sales and I picked up DVDs of Kick-Ass and the complete second season of the Simpsons.

I have heard that Toronto is basically Pretentious Hellhole East (as opposed to somewhere like, say, San Francisco that is).

And also it's "Town of the Dumbest Hockey Fans". The team makes millions of dollars for placing 30th.

My friend will be leaving for an internship at the end of the summer in Toronto. We pretty much spent all night annoying her about her betrayal.

I'm adding some new bits to my Hypno cosplay. Decided to go for that Amazon Prime trial and get some Thai fisherman pants in time for the Faerie Festival.

I will pray for an Intervention for you Bri.

My eldest sister likes Hockey; I never seen a game (unless you count the Mighty Ducks movies) but my younger brothers have. Supposedly you want fights to break out between the players and teams.

In other news apparently the local crazy that I drew some inspiration for a fic passed away and his property is being cleared out and the building, most likely, will be torn down. The front looks really nice without that bus and who knows what else in front of it. I've heard the building itself has been condemned for years but the town could do very little about it besides not allow him to rent rooms to people, anymore. I will miss the billboard and the at times amusing messages that either he or others had placed there.

Hey, not all TO fans were happy with finishing that low again. I'm not dumb either. West Coast hate is so cliche.

    Goodwood

Toronto is a beautiful city with many features that would make any other city envious. Our Mulitcultural sections are second to none. I've been all over Canada and TO rocks. And it's not just because I live here.

It doesn't matter how many islands are right around here, from the Gulf Islands to Haida Gwaii, those of us from Vancouver Island will always refer to it as "the Island". :p

    EDIT: And this from the guy who lives for the summers where he works at a camp on another island. 8-}

My apologies if you were offended by our Toronto-hate (I agree that the dumb comment was uncalled for). I've only ever been in the Ottawa area and I LOVED it.

However, western alienation IS a studied phenomenon in Canadian political identity. It isn't cliche.

Goodwood Toronto is not for you then. I'm a little surpised by that comment. Peace.

One of the things I love about living in New York City is how multi-cultural it is! If nothing else (and it's not the only reason for me), you get to eat food from all over the world! :D

Dantana - I hope you are feeling better!

I'm all for the adage of "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," because that's why a person would travel abroad, isn't it? To experience different cultures in the context that spawned them, at least that's what seems to be the case to me—and is why I want so very badly to visit Britain. It's also fine for cities to have various cultural enclaves, because you know what you're getting into when you go there; they each have their own special charm and they help to assimilate the residents into the country they've adopted should they choose to do so, in addition to serving other purposes. Indeed, this has been the case for over two hundred years here in the States, and what has allowed us to be a "melting pot" of sorts where immigrants from all over the world can learn to become Americans.

It's when you force cultures to co-mingle, in places where they ordinarily wouldn't, that can lead to problems such as culture-clash, because not all cultures are equal. For instance, some see women as just as worthy as men, while others don't; some insist that children are the properties of their parents and can be commanded, while others don't, et cetera ad nauseum.

Anyway, that's all I'll say about this topic, I'm woefully un-cultured as it is... ;)

I'm feeling much better, Mav, thanks.

I'm one of those who thinks the withholding of basic human rights should not be tolerated on the grounds of "respecting their culture", especially how women are treated as property in some places.

Glad you're feeling better, Dantana. :)

And that's precisely why I'm opposed to multiculturalism (yes I said I wouldn't say anything more on this topic, but you've brought up an important point).
