I mentioned some of this in the "last TV show you watched" thread.

My son and I are hooked. We watched the first five episodes this weekend and might finish today.

He found it, said the trailer reminded him of E.T. and The Goonies. And it kind of does, I definitely get a Goonies vibe from the group of boys (Dustin is totally Chunk) but maybe crossed over with Poltergeist.

    And the soundtrack is great.

As is the suspense, the references to creepy science experimentation and other dimensions, and the characters.

I hope for a season 2 but I don't know that I can wait a year or so to find out where the hell they took Will.

Just binge-watched the whole show yesterday. The episodes just kept getting better and better.

Millie Bobby Brown is an amazing young actress- she stole the show, easily. While the other kids were good, too, I found that they tended to overact a little bit, but that was still fine, it was entertaining.

It's interesting that while Dustin is so clearly the Chunk equivalent, he's much more levelheaded, and the "thinker" of the group. While it's been great to watch the show blend all the elements of the Eighties (Stephen King! Spielberg! Hughes!), it's been even better watching it play around with the tropes and established expectations.

And Hopper was giving me a major Indiana Jones vibe when he beat up, offscreen, the two or three henchmen, then charged inside the old bus, fedora and all.

I have only watched the first episode so far. It relies a bit too much on Spielbergian nostalgia and familiar tropes for my taste, but unlike most other nostalgia pandering things it seems to stand well on its own. Only reason I haven't yet watched more is because there is so much out there to watch.

Eh a bit too derivative. I'm surprised JJ and Orci and Kurtzman weren't show runners. Good but not great.

One thing that bothers me is the continuity. Why was a picture of Tig circa 2012 up in 1983?

(I do realise this post has an extremely narrow appreciation. ;))

I finished it. Fantastic series. It wears its references on its sleeve but mixes them together and gets something completely different out of it (for all the "derp Zpielberg" comments, it owes as much to obscure and ultra-violent anime series Elfen Lied, if not more). I don't know if I'd like a second season, though. I like the way it ended.

really? its that much like elfen lied? is it ultraviolent? is the winona ryder character incapable of any vocalizations other than the nonsense word "nyu"?

Not even close in its violence level (then again, what is?) but
it features a young girl that escapes a secret guv'mnt laboratory and is offered shelter by some kids. She barely speaks and has telekinetic powers, sometimes murdering her victims in pretty gruesome fashions.

I've described it as if Super 8 and The X-Files had a love child and it got all of Super 8's looks but the story telling of The X-Files.

Even if the show were crap (and it was the opposite of that) I'd have watched for the soundtrack.

I'm going to shoe-horn this in here, but for anyone enjoying the 80's nostalgia, check out The Americans if you have not yet. It's a show that starts at a high mark, and only gets better.

I thought it was really well done. Very good acting and pacing. It will be interesting to see where they take the series from here.

Just finished episode four a couple days ago.

Starting with a group of nerdy middle schoolers in the 80s playing D&D pretty much required me to watch it.

Also reminded me of Twin Peaks.
