Geez Iron_Lord, you're such a pain in the rear. Between you and Blackmyron, who completely deserves being ignored as we've established in this thread, I don't even know why I bother going to Lit anymore. I mean seriously I log on this site in the morning and even before I've had my morning coffee I come across an Iron_Lord post and all I see is red. C'mon man don't you know when to let up? I just want to drink my morning coffee and read my Fantasy Flight updates in peace.

    Quite so.

In real life, or on social media, one can choose those with whom one interacts. If I go for coffee with friends and my peace is disturbed by, say, a disgruntled, yawping ibex, I have the option of moving to another table or rapping the ibex sharply on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper. Similarly, if my peace on social media is disturbed by a deranged hog caller, I can unfollow/unfriend/delete or otherwise remove their bizarre and obnoxious shouting from my life.

I very much enjoy the 'ignore' function here and would call for it to be extended such that it may be applied to moderators (who cannot, currently, be ignored). I recently posted the following to comms but have been redirected here:

EHT raised the objection that this could lead to missed warnings from mods. Why not leave this down to personal choice? If I miss a warning and this results in a ban, so be it. Rather that than be constantly subjected to obnoxious yammering.

As is the system software doesn't allow mods/admins to be ignored.

I'll have to do it the old fashioned way and use whiteout on my computer screen to block out the mods.

In all seriousness, please disable the ignore function.

I'm sure it's not beyond the wit of man to change a bit of code. Sure, it'd be a few hours' work but think of all the jimmies you'd unrustle.

    edit:

Why? Reading the boards is a far better experience for me without seeing posts from certain users. The ignore function has a very real benefit.

What greater benefit is there in disabling it? Or what harm does it do?

Sorry but I'm less than inclined to make it so that people can ignore the folks who are supposed to be... y'know, moderating their conduct. The fact that it would require either an extension or actual tinkering with the software is just the nail in the coffin.

If for some reason the presence of a staff member's posts is that unpleasant to you, you should probably just scroll past anything that doesn't look like a warning.

The beauty of the ignore function is that we can all moderate for ourselves. If someone finds my conduct unpleasant, they can ignore me and vice versa. It's a far better solution as it doesn't impose mores from above. For example, you may ban someone for calling an idiot 'an idiot' while I would quite like to continue to enjoy their posts. You may also ban someone for saying any of the four letter words that resolve to **** while that doesn't bother me in the slightest.

What does bother me is people whose conversation options are limited, predictable and irritating. Like the disgruntled ibex in the short video below. You know s/he is going to respond to anything by either spitting or saying 'bleaaargh'. It's funny for a whole 30 seconds before it becomes abrasive and - with all the ibex saliva flying around - unsanitary.

The reporter is asking for trouble by approaching and bothering the beast in its pen but we have here a situation in which ibex are allowed to roam free, spitting and 'bleaaargh'ing hither and yon. Fine if you can ignore them but when they - like the bad guy from Lethal Weapon 2 - have immunity, you end up with earache and a requirement for waterproof clothing.

I suppose we still need moderators to remove things like piracy links, promotion of other websites, pornography etc. but the sooner they can be replaced with a bot, the better.

The function should remain there are certain people I simply don't have the patience for and as I don't wish to be banned find it more productive to ignore.

Really? Consider the following post: "@InsertNameHere: I'm going to kill you." Nothing else in the body of the post. How is a bot supposed to determine whether this sentence is:
    1. An actual death threat,
    2. Friendly banter over a game of Star Wars Battlefront, or
    3. A sarcastic reply to a user posting a bad pun?

No one here has sent me a death threat for years but, back in the day when it happened a fair bit, it was always via PM, so unmoderated in any case.

In terms of identifying tone, Americans can't do that anyway. A decent bot would probably be more successful.

If you get a PM you consider threatening you should report it to one of us.

The OP in the locked thread which has now been posted here, and the subsequent follow up posts from that member, read to me as not-too-subtle attempted bullying of a mod. Not to mention that as a non-American myself, the "Americans don't get tone" comment above is clearly xenophobic.

Reckon that guy can consider himself lucky not to be banned just for that - such comments directed at people who weren't mods would be likely to result in at least a strong warning, he's lucky mods have a thick skin

It's been years since I last had a death threat. I never actually felt threatened.

It's not a TOS violation to talk badly about the US, especially something along the lines of Americans not getting tone.

I'm American and I'm not offended, and was not offended by America-criticism before I became a mod.

Asking "why can't I put anyone from this group on ignore?" is not a violation either, whether the group is mods, Americans, or Anakin Skywalker fans. The answer may not be to the asker's liking but asking is not problematic per se.

Telling another user specifically that you are putting him or her on ignore is considered a bait though.

There's been a time where I've been very grateful for the ignore feature. It makes things simpler, especially when it's just one person you're ignoring for a little while.

I'm not sure I would call that "raising an objection", because I'm not really debating this idea anyway. I was just pointing out an issue with the idea. At any rate, Ramza has since said this is a no-go anyway.

I don't think the site's entire coding should be changed just to be able to ignore mods. But if people really want to ignore them, then it is possible to do (though if the mods don't want me to mention this method, then I won't, since I do understand that this could result in missed warnings).

yeurgh, the ignore feature was put forward by the RMT and would probably vote to remove the most successfully ignored users from the ignore function so as to give other users a chance to be ignored. Moreover, if a lifting competition would be considered, the person with the lowest total lifted (notsayingbowenbutsayingbowen) would be the winner in the spirit of inclusion.

In other words, it's dreadful and against the very values you stand for.

    I don't see why though.

If somebody has me on ignore I'd rather know so I don't waste time responding to any of their posts. If they can't see them (my posts) it would be pointless in me replying.

Because it's unlikely the ignore happens in a vacuum so given it's the last step in a presumably heated exchange and it's designed to provoke a reaction that has 0% chance of being read...

I mean, come on. It's the least controversial or opaque comment here.

[face_laugh] If I didn't have a grasp of logic, that would be a powerful argument indeed. As it is, as much as I hate the RMT and all things anti-meritocratic, I see no reason to forego the peace and quiet afforded by the ignore function. The boards without the posts of those on my ignore list is basically Shangri ****ing La.
