A big issue here for me is the difference between playing off of the OT for nostalgia and actually looking to recreate the setting of it whilst adding more detail. I think TFA does much more of the former so depends heavily on the audience knowing the OT, RO though does much more of the latter and I think the end result is that its world/plot is much more self supporting just as the OT obviously was.

At a character level as well whilst both films introduce many new ones RO for me gives its characters more self contained motivation. TFA starts off looking like it might go this direction but quickly switches to again playing off of nostalgia, what does Rey's family have to do with Luke and the Force? very little that I can see and the end result is Rey is more a vessel for nostalgia just reacting to direct threats.

Honestly? Either best or 2nd best for me. And the only reason it would be 2nd best is because of the huge nostalgia high that TFA gave me. I really enjoyed how Rouge One seemed more of a desperate last stand, especially since the Jedi were put firmly in the background, making the struggles of the group seem very real. Don't get me wrong, seeing Jedi take down an army singlehanded is awesome, but Rouge One showed how interesting Star Wars is with no Jedi in a story, and how the Rebel Soldiers had to push themselves to keep going, because no magic laser sword wielding badass is going to swoop in and save the day. Rouge One experimented with a different take on a Star Wars story arc, and the saga is that much better because of it.

When I first saw Rogue One I ranked it above everything else that isn't the original trilogy. Having seen it again, I still love it but would put it in 5th place.

    2. TESB
    3. ROTJ
    4. ROTS
    5. RO
    6. TFA
    7. TPM

Really its still a bit early for me to made a judgement, I think it much easier to tell when a film isnt great(and I don't think any SW films post OT and pre RO have been) but its a lot harder to know for sure whether something that has potential for greatness is going to last over time.

Relative to the OT my feeling thus far as that RO is superior to ROTJ in terms of consistency lacking much in the way of simpler Ewok like material yet I'm not sure it has a highpoint on the level of the Luke/Vader/Emperor confrontation.

I saw it three times in the theatre and finally picked up the Blu Ray yesterday. After my fourth viewing, I stand by what I felt in my gut after seeing it in the theatre, which is that it's my second favorite behind Empire. It's the type of Star Wars story I've been wanting to see for years now, but never thought I'd get outside of a novel. I had a couple of small nitpicks with it (mostly the CG characters and issues with Vader's costume on Mustafar), but I can overlook them pretty easily and just be swept away by the film. I honestly didn't expect to love it as much as I did.

About to watch it for the fourth time (third since getting the blu on Wednesday, lol). I didn't care for it at all really when I saw it theatrically, but I like it more and more each time I see it. Personally I rank them as follows:

    1. A New Hope (5/5 my favorite film of all time)
    2. Empire Strikes Back (5/5)
    3. The Force Awakens (4.5/5)
    4. Return of the Jedi (4/5)
    5. Rogue One (4/5)
    6. Revenge of the Sith (3.5/5)
    7 Phantom Menace (3/5)
    8. Attack of the Clones (2/5)

I've had a really weird reaction to having RO one BluRay. After the first 2 viewings at home I didn't care for it as much, but I've now got it on a constant loop and I love it.

Rogue One continues to get better and better every viewing. Its art is spectacular, and it weaves an emotional and gritty tale that escalates steadily to a masterful and powerful bittersweet climax. My new favorite Star Wars now.

A few months later, and I feel I should update my list :)

    1. A New Hope
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Return of the Jedi
    4. Rogue One
    5. Revenge of the Sith
    6. The Force Awakens
    7. The Phantom Menace
    8. The Battle for Endor
    9. Attack of the Clones
    10. The Clone Wars
    11. Caravan of Courage

Rogue One has actually elevated Revenge of the Sith for me. Those two movies (as well as A New Hope) flow together seamlessly, that R1 somehow managed to heighten my already high appreciation for ROTS.
At the same time, TFA has sunken a bit in my eyes. I can't say for sure why, though. But I still think it's a magnificent movie. Actually, I like all of the films - even The Clone Wars and Caravan of Courage.

I'm looking forward to seeing where future films will end up on my list, but I also look forward to seeing where Rogue One will be by this time next year.

Having watched both TFA and R1 pretty much back-to-back in the last couple of days, I now think that R1 is no better than a 4.5 star movie and TFA no worse than a 4 star movie. And that's exactly how I'd rank them. So R1 > TFA, but both are movies I'd recommend to anyone. I'm just glad that I have two great new Star Wars movies to enjoy, each with its own strengths behind it.

I've thought about it. I've rewatched some scenes. I've read some of the posts by users on here (and some very good ones at that), and I think I've changed my mind: although I still think The Force Awakens is a more fun movie with overall better characters and pacing, I'm going to say that pound-for-pound Rogue One is a better film, and thematically and narratively it's stuck with me more a fair bit more. I also flip-flopped on the first two, because I kind of do that a lot but it always feels just a little bit wrong when I don't have the original up on top.
    1. A New Hope
    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. Rogue One
    4. The Force Awakens
    5. Return of the Jedi

That's a good list Cthulhu, pretty close to my feeling now although I think there's a big gap in quality between ROTJ and TLJ.
