Yes! It can be seen in smaller areas too. You'll see things easily flooded that have never flooded before because they're clearing all the trees :(

^Yeah, that's why at first (in your response to one of the first questions), I was kind of surprised to hear you mention trees. Most of the places I've been to in Texas are cities and the only other more natural area I've driven through is up near Amarillo (driving over to New Mexico). My memories of Texas scenery based on those experiences were rather tree-less:p . Sounds like I need to check out some other parts of the state sometime!

I've been to San Antonio twice and really loved it (especially the river walk area touristy area of course!). Also have fond memories of my one trip to Austin many years ago. What are some of your favorite city attractions to visit, whether in Houston or other Texas cities? You mentioned the missions as a great place to take visitors--are there one or two mission sites in particular you were thinking of?

My grand uncle lives in San Antonio. The river walk and the Alamo were the places he took my parents when they went to see him. They also went to the Space Center museum in Houston, which I think was the highlight of their trip. The San Antonio city hall is a nice building too. To my untrained eye, it looks to have a Gothic architectural style.

Anything historical. I'm not a history buff, really, but I love it.

Ok, AS...thanks again for your participation and best wishes to you. Hope to see you around the boards at some point in the future should you ever decide to return.:)

I will come up with some starting questions for our next interviewee, Cowgirl Jedi 1701 from Michigan. Allowing some time for me to come up with the questions, send them to her, and then give her time to post her responses, we should be underway with the next round sometime within a week or so (hopefully).

In the meantime, anyone (including anyone brand new to this thread who may be reading this!) is welcome to make posts related to our general "international cultures/languages/geography" focus or to just generally socialize.:D

    OTHER THREAD ANNOUNCEMENTS:

--Our last signed-up interviewee volunteer was Ando123 from Argentina. If he/she is around when we finish Cowgirl's round, we'll proceed with that interview. If not, I will request that Skiara lock this thread* and I will be "rebooting" it with a new "Question of the Week" (or Month, lol) format where anyone can respond to the question (as well as suggest questions they would like to see asked in the future--I can keep a running list of such suggested questions in PM).

--The focus of the new thread will still be on "international exchange" but the new format should (hopefully) make it easier to keep and grow our participation base by reducing the feeling of needing to have a big time commitment to read/keep up/post in the thread. I'm also planing to check with Skiara about perhaps finding ways to "advertise" the new thread in the various Fan Force forums (Fan Force Europe, Fan Force Oceania, etc. etc.) so as to maybe attract additional international readers/participants... *fingers crossed*:D

*Please excuse the double post; I have a reason for wanting to make this part separate from the other info above...

After we finish with our previously signed-up interviewee volunteers (Cowgirl and Ando, if Ando returns in time), I would be happy to be the very last interviewee in this thread, if there is interest. I'm from Florida (and yes, I survived Hurricane Irma last week--luckily with very minimal effects![face_relieved] ).

So if you'd like to have me as the final interviewee before the big "reboot," simply "like" this post!:p

    1. What are a couple of what you think are the prettiest natural places in Michigan? (links to pics encouraged!:D )

Arch Rock on Mackinac Island: Arch Rock from below
    Arch Rock from above

    Lake Michigan shoreline: Beach Grass
I don't know exactly where this is but I've been in a spot that looks kind of like it.

    South Haven
This is my favorite beach to go to. I love wading through the surf and walking the pier.

    2. What are a couple of what you think are the most interesting non-natural attractions to visit around the state? (i.e. city attractions, historical sites, etc.)

Mackinac Island. I could go there a hundred times and never get tired of it. I absolutely love it.
    Mackinac Island Wikipedia page
There are a bunch of pictures, and some of the links will lead to more pictures.

    3. What do you enjoy most about living in Michigan (as opposed to somewhere else in the US)? Are there any aspects you're less fond of?

I have lived in Michigan my whole life. But after visiting my aunt in Phoenix, Arizona, I have become aware that people in Michigan seem to drive relatively sanely compared to other places.

I'd say it's very diversified. As far as I can tell, you can find just about any kind of food you want in Michigan. Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Thai, falafel..... You name it, we've probably got it. Except surströmming. I don't think you can find surströmming in Michigan. [face_laugh]:p

    Hi cowgirl,

Thanks for your first batch of answers! I've got a few questions about Michigan too :)

Unless I got his wrong, the name "Michigan" comes from the language of one of the Native American tribes that populated the area before the settlers came. Is that Native American presence still felt today? If yes, are there any specificities of Native Americans in Michigan that you'd like to talk about?

A related question: can you tell us anything about the ancestry of the European settlers in Michigan? Where did they come from and does that cultural heritage still manifest itself in any way? (e.g. food, language specificities, festivals, etc.)

Michigan must be one of the first US states I learned about in school because it got mentioned all the time when we were taught about the Great Lakes, and having had a look at a map just now, well, I was reminded why :p Can you tell us a bit about the role of the lakes in your daily life? It could be anything from small things (e.g. do you have boat-buses to travel within cities or from city to city) or big things (e.g. fishing is an important industry).

That's easy: Escanaba In Da Moonlight

A couple things I forgot when answering this question earlier: Pasties Pronounced pass-tee.
Yummy! When was the last time I had a pasty? Can't remember. That means it's been too long.

    Mackinac Island fudge
Best fudge ever. Trust me, I've eaten it. And that picture of pouring it onto the marble slab? Man, I can almost smell it! Mmm!

Also, dipping French fries in gravy is a thing here.

Forgotten when answering this before: Mackinac Bridge
I'm actually pretty shocked that I forgot it, since it's such a major Michigan landmark. I did the Bridge walk a couple times when I was a kid. It was fun.

The Potawatami tribe has their powwow regularly. And there's a Potawatami Zoo. (No, that's not where they keep the Potawatamis. :p) I heard a joke somewhere that the Indians are taking back the country one casino at a time. It's funny, but it seems to be somewhat true in Michigan, because there are several Native American owned casinos.

There is a strong German presence around Frankenmuth.

Oktoberfest is also a popular thing in Michigan.
Actually, the Great Lakes are important because they are part of a shipping lane that connects with the Saint Lawrence Seaway. It isn't uncommon to go to the beach and see a freighter way out. These freighters are so important that they have even been immortalized in song.
    Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
As for as I know, there is no such thing as a "Michigan accent". If anything, it's a non-accent. However, Michigan does have some local slang. One example is calling venison, "High Speed Beef". Michigan local slang is particularly prevalent in the U.P. (That's "Upper Peninsula") Yooper English

Have OCP's takeover of Detroit affected the rest of Michigan?

USA is the land of the superheroes, is there any Michigan based superheroes?

Honestly, I think you know more about that than I do, because I don't even know what that is.

    Does Paul Bunyan count? [face_laugh]

Vibe (AKA Cisco Ramon) is from Michigan. I had to Google it, though.

I didn't remember OCP from RoboCop either.

Following up on my earlier question about the importance of the lakes in daily life in Michigan, how would you describe the difference between the lakeside areas and the hinterland?

Also, other than Yopper slang, are there differences between the Upper and Lower Peninsula?

Most of the larger cities in Michigan seem to be on or near the lakeshore. Inland is more small towns.

The U.P. is more woodsy and the Lower Peninsula is more farm-y.

Also, it's Yooper. What in the Nine Correllian Hells is a Yopper? :p[face_laugh]
