The reason why your theory has validity is because I believe all these new releases will be tied together --- the new animation series, the new trilogy, and the new live acting tv show. Like the OT/PT + CloneWars/Rebels + Anthologies was all tied together, the latter telling stories that filled in the gaps of the main trilogy.

I just hope the movies "feel like Star Wars". And I grant, that is a tricky proposition - after all, ROGUE ONE is of a decidedly different tone than A NEW HOPE, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK feels different than PHANTOM MENACE. And yet, for all of that the main SW movies have all had a certain feel to them a certain overarching connection (in look, feel, etc). Don't get me wrong, I could enjoy a wholly new sci-fi/fantasy series. However, what I'd like is one that clearly felt like part of the SW shared universe.

Star Wars is the Skywalker saga. It is R2D2, C-3PO, Darth Vader, the Skywalker family, Yoda, Palpatine, Obi-Wan etc. The Lucas monomyth.

I never got into the expanded universe 'legends' stuff.

So while I can't say I'm not interested, if the new trilogy is totally detached from what I know as Star Wars, I'm gonna struggle to get excited about it just yet.

I was hoping for a standalone Anthology film about Yoda. I wouldn't object to a trilogy describing him and the earlier Jedi? Maybe see Maz's story as well?

This new Johnson trilogy possibly replaces the current Skywalker 9-part movie story.

Millions of SW fans occurred because they got so invested in the OT characters.
It'll be a challenge for sure if RJ was to make a trilogy based on completely new characters with no tie-in to the existing SW lore.
Why I think they'll play it "safe" by doing a trilogy on some Legends story like Bane, or the Old Republic, and those types of "past" eras, because SW fans DO have a fascination/curiosity to see such lore in film, how it would capture their interest as Disney explored these pre-existing characters under the new Canon.
Whereas creating an entirely new story with new characters can be tough sledding, especially as the whole "hero's journey" has already been done and re-done in The Force Awakens. And Disney have already kind of failed creating emotional investment in new characters they created like Kylo Ren, FN-2187, Hux, Poe, Phasma, Rey, Bodhi Rook, Orson Krennic, Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Chirrut Imwe, Baze Malbus......only K2-SO and BB-8 really have been mass embraced.

Well, that's not true. Do you base your opinions only on some negative comments on these boards? The wide world loves Rey and Finn and Poe and Kylo Ren and Jyn and Chirrut... The story of episodes 8 and 9 will be the story of Rey and Kylo and people will want to come back and see more about them even without the OT cast. That's why I don't expect a 4th trilogy immediately but I do expect one some time down the road

Someone could have said this about J.R.R. Tolkien writing Lord of the Rings.

I remember finding Fellowship difficult to get into. Had the entire trilogy been like that I might have agreed. But The Two Towers blew me away. I'm hoping that will happen with The Last Jedi. I believe the result will be a fully balanced trilogy of trilogies. Personally I felt myself "feeling the myth" in a visceral way, particularly towards Rey. Her first dialogue scene really struck me, and the moment the lightsaber landed in her hand completely swept me away. But I also really felt this sensation whenever Luke was brought up, again in a scene with Rey, "I thought he was a myth?", and on the Falcon with Han. There was so much more to it than mere nostalgia. I'm genuinely sorry to hear when other fans don't get this experience. But we can't easily control how we feel. I'm sure you'd like to feel that way too.

I think that much of my experience with Star Wars has been rooted in nostalgia and this is something that will be very muted in whatever Rian does. It'll be a little familiar but more unfamiliar and I think there might be an uncanny sensation to it for the first film. But not in a bad way. Again, I'm super stoked to have my cake and eat it too. It just meant you had to wait an extra five years to get the trilogy you wanted, which I can see would be annoying.

I think a more apt analogy would be Warner Bros. producing a whole new sequel trilogy to LOTR with an aged Frodo and Samwise, maybe a couple others, returning to aid newcomer heroes on a quest for, uh, another Ring of Power that must also be thrown into (an even bigger) Mount Doom ...because, ya know, the studio has to make good on its $4 billion investment. Like Lucas' saga, Tolkien's trilogy was, well, Tolkien's trilogy. And it ended. Again, there's always the possibility that new adventures could not only be written (and further adapted) but moreover rooted chiefly in personal creative vision and inspiration—while still intent on turning a healthy profit as well; I've always said, art and commercialism are not mutually exclusive. And not only is the difference between shallow cash-in and deeply, meaningfully expressed pop-art seldom either/or but, rather, covers a spectrum, there's also no objective yardstick for measuring as much. Even the many indicators of crass corporate sensibilities behind Episode VII's production that one could point to -- specific and broad -- would ultimately conclude nothing. There's only shared insight via one's interpretation of the work itself. In short, I can't change anybody else's mind on the matter, nor is it my aim. But, boy, I gotta tell ya...

That scene in particular you reference where Rey summons the lightsaber, I was so completely dead inside when watching it for the first time in theaters. To me it came off desperately self-conscious and artificial; Abrams merely selling a 'one-size-fits-all' Star Wars "movie moment" as expected during a third-act finale, almost as something to be checked off a list, instead of reaching a dramatic transition on its own terms over the course of a more original, inventive and thematically resonate story line. Maybe there is indeed a quality I'm missing to the slightness of the scene where as a result certain stanzas of the Star Wars mythos are being freshly reiterated for new or younger generations of fans. I dunno. If that's what you and others got, then great. That's cool. All I do know in this instance is what I felt, which at best was: nothing.

Are you kidding? That's wild! I was three the first time I saw Luke ignite a lightsaber - it flew to him across the dune sea, he caught it in a moment of triumph, and had this glorious battle. Seeing Rey catch it in TFA made me feel exactly what I felt 34 years ago.

Yeah! I dissect things weeks down the line, but when I watch the film for the first time it is to get lost in these moments, especially with a swelling Force theme bathing the whole scene in heart pumping emotion. Brilliant - loved it, like Luke's moment with the sunsets in ANH. Goosebumps, every time.

I couldn't really give a fig if Rey caught it because on her first ever time trying to pull something with the Force she bests a trained dark sider, or because the Force willed it. Who cares what the junior novelisation says, or some cryptic tweet. Smell the flowers, don't inspect the manure!

It will probably mean more to you when you learn she's Luke's long-lost daughter with a heart-breaking backstory (not a spoiler - just wishful thinking).

The core problem is script writing, not directing. RIan did a good job of directing. They need to start separating it, so that the director is there purely to direct the actors, make interesting shots. And hire renowned writers to write. Especially in the sense of a trilogy, like this new one, you need a singular vision in writing, not three different writers all playing it by ear.

The edit timer went, wanted to add.....

RJ has always been considered an excellent technical director, but actual dialog unrealistic, contrived, not natural. Tho his STORIES have been praised as containing interesting ideas. Basically, we saw that in TLJ.

Personally I think (after 3 viewings) that Rian Johnson knocked Ep 8 out of the park. It really felt to me like a filmmaker making something at the top of his game and as such makes me very interested for and excited in his work on a new trilogy of films.

But Star Wars is supposed to have slightly awkward contrived dialogue... it's part of the whole space opera thing. The prequels went a little too far down that path, for my tastes, but I think Rian's style fits Star Wars and the Sequel Trilogy very well. I loved the dialogue in TLJ.

Rian Johnson knocked it out of the GALAXY. I just got back from my 4th viewing, and I'm still blown away. It's a spectacle, superb, and I can't wait to see the next one. Plus we've got another trilogy of films to look forward to?
