So... The OT had Special Editions - What would you think about this occurring for the PT?

If your response is "They are fine as they are" that's cool - But this thread is for what you would add (with what is available and unused) and what you would fix up

Me? I would touch up some of the background cgi especially in AOTC's. I would completely change the Trade Federation droids to look more sinister e.g. Magna Guard style, IG-88 style or the Commando droid style used in the Clone Wars - They look fantastic! I would also cut a couple of the Padme/Anakin scenes (although I acknowledge SE's improve aspects of the films as are...) There are also a few times where lightsaber colours change in certain Jedi's hands that need to be fixed. I would also change Jar Jars voice to that of an alien with subtitles :D

And if I were being completely selfish - I would add Quinlan Vos to the arena battle on Geonosis! Great character look that needs to be in one of the films! Although with him I am still holding out hope for a main character status on the proposed tv show... (I hated the surfer vibe DF went with in the cartoon though)

    Anyone?

Not if George Lucas is doing them. If current Lucasfilm leadership and creative talent want to fix up some stuff, I think that could be fine.

Didn't TPM kind of already have one? I know the Yoda in the Blu Ray version was changed to digital to match AOTC and ROTS unlike his original appearance.

Surprised to see an oldbie alive and well.

I'm not sure as they already have been heavily altered in some ways like AOTC with new scenes. They just don't have the gimmicky "Special Edition" title on it.

Haha - I take it from your av you are (obviously) a huge fan - So no point trying to change your mind  Personal opinion? I don't like the plain looking ones. The red/brown Geonosis ones are better BUT a more vicious looking droid (and their voices) would add sooo much more to them!

Yeah, mostly joking around. Love the droids myself, but i can see why you would want their designs changed.

All 3 are actually SE's already but TPM is the only one that you'd really notice and ROTS has like one change I think.

I'd only be open to a special edition of Revenge of the Sith only if it is to make the film of higher quality than it already is. But, Disney better not ever mess with the first two films.

No. There have already been changes made to the first two prequels and as limited as they are they already hurt them as much as some of the changes hurt the OT. Removing the "vote now!" chant from the senate scene in The Phantom Menace reduces the dramatic weight in that scene which is a major point in the entire saga - the first major seed of the empire. The editing change in Dooku's escape in Attack of the Clones feels ridiculously disjointed and doesn't feel smooth at all.

    Removed - cool it.

Shouldn't the creator of the movies be the one who should have the sole right to make changes, rather than some corporation that happens to own the rights now? That's exactly the kind of thing Lucas was railing against in his Berne Convention speech.

I wouldn't omit anything. If it's to add scenes, fix some textures or polish up some effects, then sure. I'm all for it!

As a Star Wars fan who grew up with the prequels, I would be open to Disney releasing special edition DVDs if either George Lucas approves the changes or the DVDs allow the viewer to select between the special edition and the theatrical version.

I'm all for putting deleted scenes or new scenes in, or especially updating the cgi sfx.

Also even though I hate the newer voice, I wonder if the battle droid voices in TPM & AOTC should change to match the ones in ROTS and Clone Wars.

I wish we could see the original cut of Anakin's turn in ROTS, like as a bonus "what-if?" or something.

I bet Lucas has it archived, and if he does I am even more sure that he wouldn't let it leak under most circumstances.

Would need a much longer movie generally in the unlikely scenario there would ever be a director's cut with it reinserted.

But besides that, like others have said more Anakin and Padme scenes in AOTC would be awesome. The stuff on the bonus disc of Ep2's dvd was great.

TPM as is I think works in it's context.

i wouldnt remove any scenes involving any of the characters/change their voice bc that's just insulting to the director and would mess up a lot of things. However, I wouldn't mind 'extended editions' of the PT with added in deleted scenes in AOTC or ROTS. Other than that I really dont see what else they could 'specialise' or add on to the films that they dont have already.

At a guess I think it was to make things seem a little more diverse.

Alien languages and cheering in it's place makes sense when this is the central Senate for a whole galaxy.

Wasn't the original turn about Anakin truly believing the Jedi had betrayed the Republic?

I believe that may very well have been the rationale, and its the main argument for those defending the change, but in this case I think it was better to go for the romantic rather than the realistic.

It was more power-based originally I believe. Anakin was rising in status but still wasn't satisfied. He was becoming disillusioned with the Jedi, part of which still remains in the final film. I don't know the exact details, but it seems the Jedi were getting their hands dirty a little more (like the DVD disc 2 scene where Mace directly suggests arresting Palpatine - it shows that while the Jedi were justified in wanting autonomy, there was some truth to Palpatine's claims they were afraid of losing their power). Therefore the Jedi Council, and also Anakin, came across as a little less gullible Imo.
I like what we got, but it would be cool to see the first cut nevertheless.

As is my understanding, Anakin was a little more in line with Palpatine's philosophy from earlier on.
I think the film had a longer first half in this form, for example watch the extended "I'm appointing you to be my personal representative" scene on the bluray bonus features.
This version of the scene would make Padme's Rebellion scenes more relevant also. You get the sense that everyone is weary and no one knows who to trust.

    ----------------------------------
    80 INT. CORUSCANT-CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE-DAY
ANAKIN stands with PALPATINE at his window overlooking the vastness of Coruscant. Several buildings have been destroyed. A brown haze hangs over the landscape.

PALPATINE: Anakin, this afternoon the Senate is going to call on me to take direct control of the Jedi Council.
ANAKIN: The Jedi will no longer report to the Senate?
PALPATINE: They will report to me . . . personally. The Senate is too unfocused to conduct a war. This will bring a quick end to things.
ANAKIN: I agree, but the Jedi Council may not see it that way.
PALPATINE: There are times when we must all endure adjustments to the constitution in the name of security.
ANAKIN: With all due respect, sir, the Council is in no mood for more constitutional amendments.
PALPATINE: Thank you, my friend, but in this case I have no choice . . . this war must be won.
ANAKIN: Everyone will agree on that.
PALPATINE: Anakin, I've known you since you were a small boy. I have advised you over the years when I could ... I am very proud of your accomplishments. You have won many battles the Jedi Council thought were lost . . . and you saved my life. I hope you trust me, Anakin.
    ANAKIN: Of course.
PALPATINE: I need your help, son.
    ANAKIN: What do you mean?
PALPATINE: I fear the Jedi. The Council keeps pushing for more control. They're shrouded in secrecy and obsessed with maintaining their autonomy . . . ideals. I find simply incomprehensible in a democracy.
ANAKIN: I can assure you that the Jedi are dedicated to the values of the Republic, sir.
PALPATINE: Nevertheless, their actions will speak more loudly than their words. I'm depending on you.
ANAKIN: For what? I don't understand.
PALPATINE: To be the eyes, ears, and voice of the Republic . . .
    ANAKIN thinks about this.
PALPATINE: (continuing) Anakin . . . I'm appointing you to be my personal representative on the Jedi Council.
ANAKIN: Me? A Master? I am overwhelmed, sir, but the Council elects its own members. They will never accept this.
PALPATINE: I think they will . . . they need you more than you know.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palpatine assures Anakin his acquiring of greater control over the Council and Senate will help end the war, and you can see Anakin is trying to stay true to his Jedi teachings but is perhaps questioning if he is on the right path. The power Palpatine is dangling in front of him is working.

    The bluray deleted-scene version has some lines that don't seem to appear above, weird. One moment I particularly like is this;
PALPATINE: It's upsetting to me that the Council doesn't seem to fully appreciate your talents. Don't you wonder why you have been kept off the Council?
ANAKIN: My time will come when I am older... and, I suppose, wiser.
PALPATINE: Age is not a good measure of ability, Anakin. I think they see something in you they fear. They see your future, and they know your power will be too strong to control. They see you as a threat to their power.
    ANAKIN: I've sensed that...

Originally the actual turn was less a last minute cave-in to fear for Padme's life (through threat to Palpatine's life). Anakin was more consciously aware in himself that he was seeking more power I think, something he believes the Jedi are holding from him.

Palpatine tells Anakin, before Mace and his posse arrive, that he was responsible for manipulating the midichlorians and creating Anakin.
At first Anakin states "I don't believe you!" parallelling ESB - Vader similarly revealing to a disbelieving Luke he is his literal father and attempting to use the fact that Luke is his son to try and recruit him. Anakin, however, says yes. By the time Mace has arrived Anakin has pledged, but the Jedi don't know this. Mace tells Anakin to stand down and leave Palaptine's side, but Anakin defiantly refuses. The fight happens with Anakin there, and at the climax there is again the lightning showdown, but Palpatine keeps trying and doesn't feign weakness, until Anakin steps in and helps kill Mace to protect his new master.

In the final cut it is more Palpatine's fault because slimilly Palpatine turns Anakin's strengths into weaknesses more directly, I think.
It's arguably a more relateble turn in the final cut; Anakin at first just loves, but too much and in the wrong ways. This is capitalised on by Palpatine, forcing a moment where it's basically "me (and Padme) or them".
Mace appears to be grabbing for greater power (from a point-of-view), therefore blurring the distinction between each order, and a desperate Anakin chooses Palpatine in the heat of the moment, ultimately dooming himself.

    Edit -
This scene is also greatly relevant:

    88 INT. CORUSCANT-GALAXIES OPERA HOUSE-NIGHT
ANAKIN lands his speeder and exits.
ANAKIN runs up the stairs at the Galaxies Opera House.
ANAKIN runs through the hallway and enters Palpatine's box, where the CHANCELLOR is sitting with Mas Amedda and Sly-Moore, watching the Man Calamari Ballet doing "Squid Lake."

ANAKIN: You wanted to see me, Chancellor.
PALPATINE: Yes, Anakin! Come closer. I have good news. Our Clone Intelligence Units have discovered the location of General Grievous. He is hiding in the Utapau system.
ANAKIN: At last, we'll be able to capture that monster and end this war.
PALPATINE: I would worry about the collective wisdom of the Council if they didn't select you for this assignment. You are the best choice by far … but, they can't always be trusted to do the right thing.
    ANAKIN: They try.
PALPATINE: Sit down, (to his aides) Leave us.
ANAKIN sits next to PALPATINE. The Chancellor leans over to him.
PALPATINE: (continuing) Anakin, you know I'm not able to rely on the Jedi Council. If they haven't included you in their plot, they soon will.
ANAKIN: I'm not sure I understand.
PALPATINE: You must sense what I have come to suspect . . . the Jedi Council want control of the Republic . . . they're planning to betray me.
    ANAKIN: I don't think . . .
PALPATINE: Anakin, search your feelings. You know, don't you?
    ANAKIN: I know they don't trust you . . .
PALPATINE: Or the Senate . . . or the Republic . . . or democracy for that matter.
ANAKIN: I have to admit my trust in them has been shaken.
PALPATINE: Why? They asked you to do something that made you feel dishonest, didn't they?
ANAKIN doesn't say anything. He simply looks down.
PALPATINE: (continuing) They asked you to spy on me, didn't they?
    ANAKIN: I don't know ... I don't know what to say.
PALPATINE: Remember back to your early teachings. Anakin. "All those who gain power are afraid to lose it." Even the Jedi.
ANAKIN: The Jedi use their power for good.
PALPATINE: Good is a point of view, Anakin. And the Jedi point of view is not the only valid one. The Dark Lords of the Sith believe in security and justice also, yet they are considered by the Jedi to be. . .
    ANAKIN: . . . evil.
PALPATINE: . . . from a Jedi's point of view. The Sith and the Jedi are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power. The difference between the two is the Sith are not afraid of the dark side of the Force. That is why they are more powerful.
ANAKIN: The Sith rely on their passion for their strength. They think inward, only about themselves.
    PALPATINE: And the Jedi don't?
ANAKIN: The Jedi are selfless . . . they only care about others.
    PALPATINE smiles.
PALPATINE: Or so you've been trained to believe. Why is it, then, that they have asked you to do something you feel is wrong?
ANAKIN: I'm not sure it's wrong.
PALPATINE: Have they asked you to betray the Jedi code? The Constitution? A friendship? Your own values? Think. Consider their motives. Keep your mind clear of assumptions. The fear of losing power is a weakness of both the Jedi and the Sith.
    ANAKIN is deep in thought.
PALPATINE: (continuing) Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis "the wise"?
    ANAKIN: No.
PALPATINE: I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life ... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.
ANAKIN: He could actually save people from death?
PALPATINE: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
    ANAKIN: What happened to him?
PALPATINE: He became so powerful . . . the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. (smiles) Plagueis never saw it coming. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.
ANAKIN: Is it possible to learn this power?
    PALPATINE: Not from a Jedi.
