I know it was said as a joke but I want the crew to go rescue Luke from the netherworld of the Force... let him come back one way or the other.

They could also put in some good characters from the old canon like Cindell from the Ewok movies.

But wouldn’t that then bring imbalance to the force? :p

Any word on whether my favorite character from TFA, Taslin Brance who got a LEGO minifigure in this year's advent calendar will be back for 9?

OK, forget Billy Dee. We need to alter the focus of this thread to making this happen.

I'd be totally down for a trippy-ass battle inside the Force between Luke's spirit and Snoke's. Have it make the entire audience feel like they're on really good acid.

OK let's talk about what we want Lando to be doing in this movie.

In the old EU I got tired of every author having him be in charge of yet another new mining operation in each new book. As suave and charming of a fella as he was, his post-ROTJ character was pretty stagnant. When Mindor came out and depicted him as an ass-kicking New Republic General, it was a breath of fresh air. It was Lando's Solo Command.

With that said --- the new canon isn't the old canon, and we've been suddenly skyrocketed thirty years in the future instead of slowly swimming through extradimensional blobs, killer bubbles, and four-year-long extragalactic invasions in order to get to that point. We're not going to see a Lando who's undergone tons of character development, because that's not what the audience wants to see. We're hopefully going to see a Lando who shows up with some kind of fleet, demonstrating that he can still be a competent general if he wants to be, who then walks down the ramp of the Lady Luck (a boy can dream) and kisses Rey on the hand. Is he running a mining operation? Sure, why not. As long as he shows up to help the Resistance.

It would be amazing if the reason they were holding off using Lando in these films is because the new Solo movie reveals something major about him they want to use down the line as a plot twist, but I'm guessing they're not planning it to that extent.

Lando shows up in a post-ROTJ excerpt in the new Han and Lando book. So I guess it's possible that something happens to Lando after Endor? But unlikely; I doubt they would wanna close that door for good.

Also, can we talk about how ridiculous it was for Johnson and the Episode VIII people to even consider for a split second using Lando in Benicio's role? And having him betray the heroes again? Seriously, there was a perfect role for him in Episode VIII --- responding to Leia's plea for help and showing up to rescue the heroes --- and they considered casting him as a villain? Ugh.

I wonder what the title will be? Someone years ago correctly guessed the Force Awakens on an online forum. My guess is that this movie will be called Star Wars: Episode IX: Balance of the Force. What are some of your ideas?

He saved Tanaab, and in the nu-canon every planet is ruled by a monarchy. Have him be made King of Tanaab after the Battle of Endor.

After seeing how Luke was interpreted in 8, I'm not surprised they considered going this route for Lando. However, if they went through with it I have no doubt it would be acclaimed, people would be cheering how this adds nuance and character development to Lando, and Billy Dee Williams would issue a statement saying that his reservations on making Lando a villain were, in retrospect, incorrect. :p

It's people on a message board failing to understand that sometimes you have to throw EVERY idea out there, even if you know it is bad, when you are working on a collaborative creative effort like this. He said, in that interview, that he knew it was a bad idea, that's why it's not in the movie.

That's why directors have PR people. Total transparency isn't actually required, by all means share some stuff that wasn't done but don't mention the bad stuff - there's no way to win that spin war.

This'd be so even on a film not as controversial as TLJ.

It's a movie. And Star Wars history is filled with... Well, mostly just the one eccentric director who runs his mouth a lot about ideas that didn't make it. Whole books have been written about it. Personally, I'll take Johnson's exuberance about his work over Abrams' secretive magic tricks any day, but obviously many disagree.

I dunno if Canto Bight should have been Lando's casino, he seems like he would run a classier joint and weed out the war profiteers, but Lando's Holo Slot Machine could have been a thing. Or even him as the Master Codebreaker (but I love the Master Codebreaker gag as it is)

That would have been a terrible role. That moment needed the despair of the heroes knowing they were alone, that there would be no cavalry. Actually *sending the cavalry* would have been a lousy idea.

The man ran a mining operation where the product was blaster gas. I don't think he'd have any issue with taking money from war profiteers.

This would have been cute, but I'm not sure anyone would be happy with a non-speaking Lando cameo, and it would have set up a reasonable expectation for him to appear after Leia sent out her distress call, which, as already discussed, would not have served the narrative.

The more I think about it, the only place in The Last Jedi it would serve the narrative to have Lando appear is on the bridge of the Raddus, killed off like Ackbar. So I'm very glad he wasn't in the movie at all.

That is true, I just like to think after Lando's deal with Vader and Rebel General stint he would try to engage in business ventures that would have less potentially lethal outcomes for innocent citizens. Like he can still run scams but no good citizens would die.

Whole lotta Lando speculation up in this thread, hopefully LFL realizes we have a dearth of Lando in the ST. But maybe having the character in Solo is a good omen for his return ("Hey! Remember Lando? Here he is again!")

I'd be great to see Lando again, he was always in my Big 6 (3 + Chewie + Mara). Maybe the remaining Resistance can take refuge wherever Lando's new operation is based. Rey and Poe would love to "run the belt", right? ;)
Considering Billy Dee Williams recently voiced Lando in Rebels, I'm sure he'd be positive about reprising his role on the big screen too. The ball is probably in Lucasfilm's court. Though after TLJ, my guess is their policy is more along the line of out-with-the-old.
