Well I guess this is still the place for those who are doing the "impactful albums" thing, so here's my next choice:

Day 3



John Coltrane, Giant Steps (1960)

This choice may be fudging a bit because the reason I'm choosing it is really tied to more than just this one Coltrane album (specifically, Blue Train, My Favorite Things, and A Love Supreme are all tied into this as well). But when I was trying to think of which album I could choose to represent this particular phase of "impactfulness," this is the one that jumped to mind first.

I had a friend back in my student days who introduced me to Coltrane and even though I already knew and liked some older jazz by that point, Coltrane was a window into a whole new area of jazz for me. I don't have the musicology knowledge to break down any of the technical reasons why it's so great--all I can say is that I love the music, and I associate it with a very particular period in my life, which was filled with wonderful informal get-togethers of friends, cheap wine, good food (luckily I had friends who could cook, since I'm hopeless at it!), and great conversation going into the wee hours of the morning! And Coltrane's music was a big part of the soundtrack to this era of my life. Fun times!
