?

Has The Last Jedi surpassed The Godfather Part II as the greatest movie sequel ever?

  1. Yes, of course. No one can question it!

  2. I can't choose. They're both equally great!

General consensus among critics seems to be that The Godfather Part II is the greatest movie sequel of all time. I therefore pose this question... has TLJ surpassed it as the greatest sequel ever?

    I say yes.

I find The Godfather part II to be highly overrated in this context. It certainly can't match the depth of character or sophisticated storytelling that we see in TLJ.

That is so undeniably true. It isn't even an opinion. It is a fact.

I was wondering, just yesterday, when the revisions of film history would begin so that fallacious statements such as Bride of Frankenstein being the "first film to be considered better than its predecessor" will be edited to demonstrate that we never knew what it meant that a sequel could improve upon the films which came before it until Rian Johnson finally managed to actually do it.

The National Film Registry has it currently under consideration for preservation for being culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.

Historically significant is impressive especially because the film only came out four months ago. I guess that really shows the genius of Rian Johnson’s writing and directing.

It surpasses The Godfather Part II in this context so definitively, I believe the term 'sequel' no longer applies.

RJ has invented something unique in the history if cinema - something I am now calling the Uberequal.

Coppola kept telling Hamill it would be. And to shut up and just do what RJ tells him to or he'll risk making the fans fools unto themselves. (Well they sure showed us.) Thank the maker that Mark caved in. The alternatives shouldn't bear thinking about.

Godfather II pushed it with the flashbacks. 3 is perfect.

Godfather II sets up Hyman Roth’s lousy casino which comes off more like a closed down Trump casino than anything as stunning as Canto Bight.

Michael knows someone is trying to kill him? Big deal. Everyone but Luke and Yoda are trying to kill everyone in TLJ.

Sepia-toned cinematography? My phone can do that Coppola. I’ll tell you what my phone can’t do though. The incredible visuals in TLJ.

I think we see a dog in Godfather II. No foxes, porgs or Fathiers.

Godfather II has one notable betrayal. The Last Jedi more than doubles it.

3hrs and 22 minutes and no space battles or saber scenes? Come on Coppola. Hire an editor. If Johnson can cut what he cut you certainly could have cut something.

    Where’s the diversity Coppola?

    TLJ wins.

I mean, where are the Sicilian Hamster Penguins? That's a pretty serious ommision. You'd think Copolla would be on the ball.

To be fair. The 1900s motor cars and haircut designs created for TG Part II did look different from the 1940s/50s post war era aesthetic. So at least the correct writing and world building standards were approximated.

Easily the greatest sequel since Higander II and Star Trek Nemesis, and like these two a sigh of great things to come for their respective franchises!
