Always found Shimi's line to be a bit random. "You have brought hope to those who have none!" So who is Shimi talking about after Anakin wins the Bonta Eve Classic? Anakin has brought hope to slaves? Anakin has brought hope to humans who wish they could one day fly pods? Anakin has brought hope to people who live in crummy Mos Espa? Kitser? What?

I always thought she was referring to Qui Gon and Padme. It speaks to how selfless she is.

Huh, that's possible too! They were hopeless without the hyperdrive so maybe that's it. I still kinda like it's all about Kitster, though.

I never gave it much thought, but my impression has been the slaves in general.

Good question, though. I will be watching the career of this thread with great interest.

It was just meant for everyone in Mos Espa and not one specific group of people. Anakin was able to win a race that was normally won by the same racer, Sebulba, and showed that anyone could achieve their dreams. It was also a bit of foreshadowing of what he was going to do as the Chosen One.

I figured she meant the slaves in general — if one slave boy could win a race and earn his freedom, then they all could.

Yeah, I would take it to mean the other slaves in town. Anakin was probably made quite famous around Tatooine after that race.

...but ohmahgosh, they were throwing around the "H" word even back in the prequel trilogy.

    *shudders

I always assumed she meant the other slaves. As in if Anakin could beat the odds and win his freedom, why couldn't they? But then, maybe I assume too much :amidala:

That's correct. He raced in order to help them. And they were stranded with no hope of repairing the ship and leave.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty clear that it refers to QGJ and Padme.

I always thought that Shmi was referring to Qui-Gon and Padme. I suppose that I never gave the line too much thought. Shmi had been appraised of the gravity of the situation facing Anakin's new friends and was so selfless that she was happy that her son was in a position to serve the greater good, even though this meant that he would be taken away from her.

I still kinda like to think that she meant he's inspiring humans who want to race pods.

Clearly the Ewoks. Anakin would help destroy the Sith and the Empire during the Battle of Endor.

Shmi knew Anakin would save the teddy bears at the Woodland Build-A-Bear workshop.

If Shmi was referring to Qui-Gon and Padme, why the "those who have none" instead of "The Jedi who needs to get away"?

Edit: And yes, she 100% meant the ewoks. We're just debating what the other possibilities could be

What is hope for an Ewok? More human sacrifices?

Why would she say that when she's referring to a group of people and not just Qui-Gon? There's nothing wrong with Shmi's sentence.

Does she even know he’s a Jedi? Besides, he wasn’t the only one stranded on Tatooine.

He talks to her about the possibility of Anakin getting Jedi training, well before that quote. And Anakin had spotted Qui-Gon's lightsaber and talked about it, loudly, at the table.

Cleeeeaarly, she's talking about the audience...like...you know...little 8-12 year old boys who were sad that they aren't old enough to fly a pod racer.

Schmi is just being subtle so as not to break the fourth wall.
