Not exactly the Sopranos movie most people were hoping for; but with Gandolfini gone your options are limited.

 

is kid Tony going to be a podracer?

 

I have a hard time believing this will be interesting without Gandolfini's involvement.

 

I see no need for this at all, but I think david Chase has more credit in the bank than that.

 

The mafia in the sixties is more heavily trod ground than The Sopranos’ setting, but I think it will be plenty interesting to see Chase’s take on the period.

The Sopranos also said pretty much all it had to say on the topic of Tony’s generation and the modern mob, and there’s not necessarily any natural follow-on from there (and it would run counter to the point of the series’ open-ended finale). Whereas the show always played heavily on the idea of the past and what it meant to these people, how it shaped Tony’s image of himself and his life, the way the present was formed by the past’s legacy and Tony’s desire to cling to his image of the past, the sense of decline from the glory days of the mob. So I think it would be really interesting for Chase to go back and fully explore that past and see what it was really like.

To me, the most interesting question, though, becomes what they’re going to do about casting roles like Johnny, Uncle Junior, and Livia who already had young versions cast and more extensively showcased in this time period, but some twenty years ago, so it’s not like they can reuse the actors. Casting Dickie is easy, because I don’t think we ever saw him in flashback. Casting Johnny or Uncle Junior is going to be a lot harder.

 

It's been awhile since I saw the show, but wasn't Uncle Junior the old guy that always complained a lot? When did they feature a young version of him?

 

He was older, except when in flashback. I didn't even remember they did that, so his recasting won't be an issue for me.

 

Well that's what I thought. It's not like the young version of Junior was a regular.

 

Early Aprile, LaManna, maybe even Blundetto action would be welcome. It would be a fun window into Tony's bat**** mother's descent into weirdness and self-imposed martyrdom too, should they showcase any of that.

Billy Magnussen plays Paulie Gualtieri. John Magaro plays Silvio Dante. Very little info has come out, but the few pictures of the set and seen would indicate that Corey Stoll will play Junior Soprano. Ray Liotta might he playing a member that was only mentioned in the show. Joey Diaz is most likely playing Feech.

I just see that as the same deal as El Camino dubbing itself "A Breaking Bad Movie." That's really neither here nor there to me, just a moniker to let people that aren't aware of the connection know what it is.

 

We need an actual law banning the construction “A [property] [noun]” from subtitles for at least two decades.

 

Silly subtitle aside, as far as the film itself goes, really can't wait for this.

Also, Vera Farmiga as Livia already feels like this uncannily perfect bit of casting.

 

Well, no surprise they got Eddie Falco back.

But really? Playing the mother? Talk about oedipal issues...
