Summary: Our narrator wakes up in an alley, unable to remember his name or his past. Who is he? Will he ever find out his true identity? And when he does, what choices must he make?

Introduction
Hello there. Normally, this is where I'd introduce myself, but since I'm really not sure who I am, that's kind of hard, so maybe I'll just skip it. I've been told that it might help to bring back what I can't remember if I make a record of what I can remember, so I'm starting this journal. Whoever is reading this (in the event that someone besides me ever reads this) is probably wondering why I chose to keep a journal this way. I suppose I could have recorded this in an audio file, or typed it into a datapad, but there is something meditative about writing this down by hand. Anyway, here goes nothing.

 

Great and believable context for a diary I look forward to how the diarist unravels the clues to his identity.

So... wakes up in an alley with no idea who he is? (I have an idea....)

This is intriguing. I wonder, of course, how he got there, and where exactly he is. How will he get by, with so little to work with? I will have to check back!

 

Careful reader is suspicious... But how did he end up in the alley, with a "diary to be".

 

What? You think I'm going to give up the answers that easily? Not so my clever friends.

 

The Beginning, Part 1
So, my story. I should probably start at the beginning. Or as close to the beginning as I can remember, which actually isn't that far back. The oldest memory I currently have is waking up in the alley and seeing the girl standing over me. She looked like an angel, and for a moment I wondered if I was dead. Then my rational mind kicked in and told me I couldn't possibly be dead, because I hurt too much. My head pounded, and I ached all over, but common sense told me I should probably get off the street, so I forced myself to sit up. I asked the girl to help me up, but she insisted that I stay where I was and rest for a minute.

"You could have a concussion."

She had a valid point, and I reluctantly stayed put while she ran through the simple tests one usually does when they suspect a head injury. I noted with some satisfaction that she seemed happy with the results. Then she asked me my name. That's when I realized I'd lost my memory. I opened my mouth to answer, and discovered to my astonishment that I didn't know. I said so. For a few moments, her expression of friendly helpfulness turned to one of deep concern, then she smiled again.

"So make one up."

I closed my eyes to think, and a word floated into my mind. Makashi. I didn't know where I'd heard it, or what it meant, but it seemed like it might do for a surname. I opened my eyes and quickly looked through what I assumed must be my possessions while I tried to think of a first name. There was a datapad, some credits, a couple of ration bars, and a deck of sabaac cards. On a whim, I flipped over the top card in the deck. It was the Ace of Sabers. I grinned.

"Ace Makashi."

She shook my hand and - finally - helped me to my feet.

"Nice to meet you, Ace. I'm Merida Antilles."

 

Cool name he chose. Glad there's someone to help.

 

Hopefully these two stick together for a while.

 

Edit: Oops. Accidental double post. Never mind.

 

Makashi? Hmmm...I wonder exactly how close his connection to that name can be?

Ah well, one needs to suffer for a good fic. Especially when it is written by you and I am not the only one around here waiting for you to continue.

The Beginning, Part 2

Something was missing. Although I didn't know what I'd had to start with, when I'd looked at my belongings before, I'd assumed since I still had credits that it was all there and nothing had been lost or stolen. But now that I was standing up, the utility belt around my waist felt unbalanced.

"I think I lost something."

Just then the hair on the back of my neck prickled. My hand dropped to my hip, grasping for the object that should be there but wasn't. A low, feminine chuckle came from behind me.

"Relax, man. I don't hurt nobody."

Merida huffed in annoyance.

"Dammit, Tyra! Do you always gotta be so quiet?"

"Shucks, honey, I cain't help it I walks as soft as moonlight."

"Tyra, just come around and introduce yourself properly."

 

Fascinating... who are these new arrivals? Tyra and Merida? Definitely something's missing ... an essential piece of "equipment"

 

Something that should have been there but wasn't...

I know! A breadbox!
