Ryan Coogler Will Return To Write & Direct Marvel's Upcoming BLACK PANTHER Sequel

After the billion-dollar success of Black Panther earlier this year, Marvel Studios is bringing back ace director Ryan Coogler to helm the sequel, which is eyeing a late 2019/early 2020 start date.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed today that Marvel Studios has quietly closed a deal with Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler to write and direct the hotly anticipated sequel, which will star Chadwick Boseman (Avengers: Infinity War) as the King of Wakanda.

Coogler is expected to begin penning the script early next year with a projected late 2019 or early 2020 production start date in mind. Marvel was actually looking to resign Coogler immediately following the film's record-breaking opening, but Coogler and his camp didn't want to rush into a decision and wisely chose to take some time before striking a deal, which ultimately was signed under the radar not too long ago.

An official release date has not been announced, but based on the production timeline, it seems probable that the studio may once again be eyeing a February release for the sequel as they've already booked February 12, 2021 for an Untitled Marvel Film. It should be noted though that this date is far from confirmed and is just one of nine potential dates Marvel Studios has reserved between 2020 and 2022, although it does seem to be the most likely candidate if the studio is looking to repeat the blockbuster success of the original.

Coogler is currently in the midst of developing his next directorial venture, Wrong Answer, which will star frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger) in the lead role as a math teacher in Atlanta, who is scandalized when he looks to get funding for his school by altering his students' test scores. Coogler will also be serving as an executive producer on Creed II - a sequel he opted not to direct - and will be a producer on LeBron James' Space Jam sequel.

'Black Panther' breaks through at Golden Globes, with an eye on Oscars

"Black Panther" is looking like the answer to Hollywood's prayers as the industry embarks on awards season, adding blockbuster sizzle to an annual ritual that has been reluctant to acknowledge its costume-clad box-office stars.

With its latest accolades -- a Golden Globe nomination as outstanding drama on Thursday, and recognition from the American Film Institute's annual 10-best list -- the next hurdle would be the Academy Awards, which would represent a breakthrough for superhero movies.
Already the third-highest-grossing movie of all time in the US, behind only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Avatar" in non-adjusted dollars, the Ryan Coogler-directed movie has been a huge hit for Marvel and its parent company, Disney. Its success has represented a significant cultural milestone, as a theatrical blockbuster with a predominantly black cast and director.

Thus far, however, the financial windfall for superheroes hasn't translated into major awards recognition. Last year, buzz surrounded the prospects of another trailblazer, "Wonder Woman," but the entry from Marvel rival DC didn't make the Oscar cut.

A best-picture nomination for "Black Panther" would cap a decade-long effort to foster recognition for such movies, following a much-ridiculed proposal by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year to introduce a new "popular film" category.

The original push centered on "The Dark Knight," Christopher Nolan's sequel to "Batman Begins," which failed to receive a best-picture nomination (although Heath Ledger
was honored, posthumously, for his role as the Joker).

After that, the academy increased the number of best-picture nominees from five to as many as 10, hoping the expanded field would enable more widely seen movies to get into the mix.

The industry's biggest attractions, however, have faced ingrained skepticism from Oscar voters, which explains the "popular film" trial balloon, which many saw as an act of desperation and pandering intended to mollify ABC, the network that televises the awards, after a sizable dip in last year's ratings.

"Black Panther" is doubly significant because the movie offered such a powerful showcase for African-American talent both in front of and behind the camera, just a few years after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag came into being in response to the absence of people of color in acting categories.

If Black Panther wins best picture the middle aged white nerd is the only guy getting an Oscar for that. Kevin Feige is listed as the only nominated producer on Black Panther despite gawd knows how many producers are on it. (there's a whole thing where the Oscars will only give out 3 statues for Best Picture, happened after Shakespere in Love had 5 producers win five Oscars. for some movies there are more than 3 producers nominated per movie, see BlackKklansman has 4 producers but the last two, Peele and Lee are listed as a team so it only counts for one). I'm assuming if it does win, he would say a bit and then defer to the director.

This is the most important single reason why Black Panther was deserving of (not only be nominated but) winning the "Best Picture" nomination. The Academy often likes to vote for films that made a cultural impact, culturally significant or demonstrates the power of film. Black Panther checks all the those boxes.

And to quote excerpts from Marc Bernardin's article in Entertainment Weekly:

...Black Panther isn’t a traditional Black Oscar movie. Because it isn’t about the thing that almost every black film that’s been nominated for Oscars is: pain.

No matter how amazing such films as 12 Years A Slave, Selma, Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Precious are, they are all about black suffering. They are all about tragedy and triumph because they are all about the black experience in white America and that experience is laced with brutality and degradation and, eventually, hope. They are a history lesson in what can be overcome, often by a Great Man (or Great Woman) doing a Great Thing.

There is a place for films like that, of course. We should never forget those history lessons. But until now, every black Oscar film has felt, to some degree or another, like homework.

Not Black Panther. It doesn’t feel that way because it’s not about pain; It’s about excellence. It is, as Coogler said during the press campaign leading up to the film’s release, about the hyphen between “African” and “American.” What does it mean to be each of those things, both of those things, and neither of those things, all at once?

Coogler and his collaborators crafted a Best Picture contender that wrestles with those questions, while infusing it with its own sense of place. Costumes by Ruth E. Carter that melded the traditional with the timely. Production design by Hannah Beachler that conjured an entire world, from the largest spire to the smallest piece of jewelry, all conveying the heritage of the unconquered. A score by Ludwig Göransson that wrapped its arms around a vast mosaic of African music and musicians and embraced modern hip-hop as well.

I saw the film three times before I fell in love with it. The first time I didn’t see it for everything it was, I just read what was on the surface — I was impressed with it, but still apart from it. The second time, I saw some of the subversion that Coogler built in: For instance, the final confrontation between T’Challa and Killmonger doesn’t take place on an underground railroad by accident.

But the third time…the third time, I took my newly teenaged son, who is just beginning to reckon with who he is in this world. There is an early sequence, when Danai Gurira’s Okoye is piloting the royal shuttle through the cloaking device that keeps Wakanda hidden from the outside world. She says three simple words and, when I was sitting next to my son, those words shattered me.

“We are home.”

Because “home” is a concept that’s difficult for the average African-American to wrap their mind around. Too few of us know where home is. Of course, I know where I was born, I even know where my parents were born. But the displacement that came with hundreds of years of slavery has stripped bare the memory of where I am from. Most other people have a sense of it: I can ask an Italian person where her people are from, and there’s a fair chance she can point to a place on a map. Same with many Scots, Poles, Brazilians, Australians, Japanese…there is a city, a town, a village that their people hail from.

The power of Black Panther is that it imagines a place that could be home to millions who don’t have one. A place that isn’t marked by pain, but instead by progress. A land that knows its history and revels in it, rather than be embarrassed by it. Black Panther speaks to children who might still believe in fairy tales and gives them a new one — one with kings and queens, magic and honor, palaces and passion. And it speaks to their elders who might’ve forgotten how to believe in fairy tales. For the first time, I saw white kids dressing up as a black hero at comic-book conventions.

Black Panther will most likely resonate and be more impactful on the general movie going audience than any of the other Oscar nominated films.
