On a podcast a couple months ago, Chris Weitz discussed some of the changes made to Rogue One starting with and subsequently following his involvement, the most surprising perhaps being an early draft that ended with a wedding.

Who was going to get married? In any event that would've been such a dull way to end the movie. This movie was supposed to directly lead into ANH. No room for happiness at that point.

 

Agreed. That change was certainly a good one.

 

I assume that could've been Jyn and Cassian. This was apparently from that first draft in which only the two of them survived Scarif. There were also some rumors that the ending included the two of them living on a secluded planet afterwards (I'm not really sure about this?). So I'm inclined to believe it was them. This ending would've been slightly corny, but I like that they had a happy ending (together), even briefly, in that first draft.

 

Eh, I liked the two characters (especially Jyn) as much as most in this forum, but a happy ending would've been out of place in that scenario. I don't want to say that Jyn and Cassian were "expendable"; but it's a cop-out to have them surviving on a secluded planet off the beaten path of the Galactic war that was going on during the OT era. I remember the How it should have ended video for R1 had K2SO saving Jyn and Cassian after he had downloaded a copy of himself into the other robot.

I don't disagree with you @Ahsoka's Tano I also think that ending would've been slightly weird (the two of them living God knows where, while the war is ragging in the galaxy... especially because I think Cassian would never stop fighting). I'm just saying that I'm glad they had some kind of happy ending, no matter what it was (although it is better that they changed it). I don't mind tragedy and heroic deaths, but I'm also a sucker for happy endings . Yet, I love how the movie ended. It's really powerful.

 

As I've said previously, the ending with the Death Star firing down on the planet and Raddus saying, "Rogue One, May the Force be with You" was extremely powerful. That's what really made the movie special to me. Instant Blu-ray pre-order (and to date the only post-Disney era SW of the franchise).

 

IMO, it’s by far the most powerful ending to a Star Wars film.

 

The reshoots they made after the first trailer helped the movie flow better. The first trailer apparently showed Jyn running with the Death Star plans outside towards the transmission tower (implying that the records and tower were two separate buildings).

 

Yes, that was a major change. Though we never saw that version in full, and can’t judge it. Certainly, it looked great. Especially Krennic walking through the water in the fading light. But I trust KK’s and Gilroy’s judgment on it, I think.

 

Good god, I'm glad we got what we did.

 

If Raddus survived, what would that make Ackbar?

 

Ackbar would be an even brighter spot in the universe, for he would be basking in the light of Raddus.

 

I love this film to bits...love it...but I still think that would have been a great scene!
