The term "pseudomotion" was used in most Star Wars books for the motion seen in hyperspace jumps (in and out).

    Mandalorian S1E6 minor spoilers:
in the credits concept art one of the 3 X-Wings (presumably the squadron leader) flies a T-70, while in the episode all three fighters are T-65. I kinda wish they went with that to show the technological transition.

I'm wondering if that was marketing/corporate politics stepping in and saying no.The T-70 is the face of the Resistance in the movies and that era of the lore, so while the T-70 did exist at this point, it's synonymous with the movies, so I could see them saying no to that, to not confuse the marketing

That seems to be what story group is currently going with as well. I remember Pablo answering the gravity well hyperjump questions on twitter with the safeguards answer.

To me it seems to be inspired by the Kenner imperial ground transport (which was also in Rebels)

They might also just be using T-65s because they are a small unit out in the stix. Similar to how the T-70 itself would be deployed by rim patrol and militia units after the main fleet switched to the T-85s

Oh, that's awesome!! :D I knew those tips on the engine pods reminded me of something - I just couldn't get my head around what! :D

Kudos to Porsche and Lucasfilm, if this is as deliberate as the combination suggests. =D=

The three seats remind me of Jade Shadow - pilot up front, backed by optional co-pilot and navigator. Allows you to swap around who's flying during long missions to prevent fatigue, and offload specialist systems like comms and sensors during high-intensity situations. Also means that the plane is more usable as a privately-owned fighter for small groups - so, yes, as you say, sports coupé, or perhaps grand tourer...?

Another observation - I initially took the "Pegasus" name to simply be a reference to Porsche's stallion badge, but I realised afterwards that there's even more meta there - this is a Porsche with wings. :D

I feel like in the interest of making a safe jump, you'd want to exit outside of the star system altogether. A hyperspace lane is usually pretty stable over centuries, but within a star system there's tons of objects that are constantly shifting position every month, and I don't think a navicomputer can account for that, or jump your ship with enough precision to avoid obstacles. The way Han makes it out in ANH, it already takes an extremely high degree of precision just to plot the correct course while flying through a known hyperlane...and if that's the case then trying to exit safely inside a star system is probably beyond the navicomputer's capabilities.

But nearly every time we've seen a drop out (movies, TCW, Rebels), it looks like it's within visual range of the relevant planet.

Plus, gravity is likely the guide for calculations, right? I've tried to work on a hyperspace theory over the past year or so about the kind of geometry it might use, but I besides, I theorized that gravity functioned like pressure, forcing ships back "towards" realspace.

Is the Space Porsche meant to be starfighter sized, or is its reference of being a starfighter similar to early references of the U-Wing being a fighter? Either way, I like it, if it is indeed a starfighter, its what I imagine would be built on somewhere like Adumar. Its sleek, but is still defined as a combat fighter, with a lot of influences from real world planes.

Zahn was notorious for over-using the term. It really worked as a description the first time I read it, but by the fourth or fifth it just felt lazy.

Ships of all kinds often make several hyperspace jumps along a route, stopping for recalculations at a Nav beacon. Especially for trickier jumps that might be going through areas of stellar debris, it could take several minutes. This was seen a lot in the old TIE Fighter game as you escort cargo ships through inspection areas.

True. I did mention this was my headcanon though, so it can be however I want :p

Now that I think about it, what about the old Legends novels or comics? Do they have any particular depictions of hyperspace jumps that might support or contradict this?

In the earliest comics, the Falcon travels through several systems before it jumps to hyperspace - suggesting that they have a separate FTL system from hyperspace and use hyperspace only when in a big hurry.

I think later SW media ignored this though, and treated hyperspace as the only way regular ships could go FTL.

Trying to talk about sci-fi physics in terms of real physics is always risky (especially from a position of incomprehension which may simply amuse real physicists) - but from a practical perspective I'll observe that there are probably multiple different issues here. I vaguely recall some old canon suggesting that being forcibly decanted from hyperspace when you run into a gravity-well / "mass-shadows" was a safety mechanism - the real danger is supposedly with collisions, but there's possibly also an issue of near passes throwing ships off-course, which might scramble both the hyperdrive and the navacomp.

@Alpha-Red - definitely an interesting point on the fact that "orbital" positions will vary rapidly. In the Black Fleet books, civilian traffic from Coruscant was shown taking a long slow journey in a sort of traffic-jam to a jump point on the edge of the system - Luke and Akanah had to leave this way - but I think that's just to do with traffic regulations rather than tech.

@Sturm Antilles - I always thought "pseudomotion" was a pretty good description, a callback to what we see on screen that also works as a short, abstract technical term within the sci-fi vocabulary.

The famous one is the fleet of Star Destroyers that collided with the shields of Executor during their revert, and were obliterated in the process. Just how long the reversion phase is is unclear - this may cover a considerable distance, and explain why ships "arrive" relatively close to their target...? [face_thinking]

That sounds interesting. Possibly the system later described as "backup hyperdrive"? Detailed version would be appreciated, purely out of fan curiosity. :D

As to the stuff from the TV show (which I haven't seen yet, but still, live-action Star Wars TV show?! :D)... I'm more than happy with T-65s, and in terms of the reason the prison barge isn't in hyperspace... I'd suspect that a prison barge might not have a built-in hyperdrive at all - you can make the location remote and largely classified, and having the prison ship anchored in realspace means that stealing the whole ship becomes impossible. :D

A very rough scaling attempt from available footage suggests a length around 15m, maybe a bit less, so yes, this does seem to be starfighter-sized. Anything I could say about role would be pure speculation, except to note that the available cues accommodate a wide range of interpretation - the "light assault" designation, normally used by gunships, and the fact that this is a Porsche, suggest that this is a vehicle that's designed to get right down in the dirt, but at the same time, there are very clear hyperdrive superiority fighter cues as well - and in terms of capabillity, a lot depends on what the ship's designed to carry. Thoese chin cannon look entirely adequate for dogfighting and attacking repulsorcraft or other ground targets (think TIE, T-47, U-wing, Y-wing), but given @Blackhole E Snoke's observation about apparent callbacks to all three real-world Lightning fighters, are there "mission bays" underneath the fuselage as well...?

    Or not? :p [face_thinking]

Marvel SW: New Planets, New Perils (October 1977)

Han: "Get a smuggling czar on your tail, ol' buddy, and even a galactic war won't save you! As soon as the craters cooled, Jabba'd have us both zapped by one of his blaster-happy bongos!"
    Chewie: "Urk!"
Han: "Yeah, I thought you'd see it my way. So set 'em for Tatooine … Next stop, Mos Eisley spaceport … though we've a few more light-years to go before we even cut to hyper-space!"

And the next shots are a planet with beasties, a space station, and some space junk - implied to be the next three star systems.

I think a local FTL system could be a feature of a hyperdrive...long-range pseudo-motion? Wave riding on a hyperspace projection point but never entering?

Keep in mind..that was way back in the day when we did not have a lot of 'scientific' explanations for things and writers were pulling stuff out of thin air.

Having said that you may have to worry about planetary alignment of all bodies in the system depending on which way you are jumping. For example if you are jumping perpendicular to the system then you might not have to clear as much as if you are jumping parallel to the system.

The Falcon could be making microjumps between systems before getting onto the hyperlane that takes them to Tatooine.

RE: New Republic prison ship, I do love how it had dual turbolaser turrets just like the ones found on the CR90 corvette. The vessel has some CEC vibes, but overall it is unique and new, which I like!

So what are we looking at here, some luxury-looking rendition of the ARC-170? I really think it could fit the Adumari fighters from Legends, since they also take from the Lightning, so maybe Adumari crossed with Incom designs. Apparently, this ship won't appear in the movie, so we can only speculate on what its role is meant to be.

Wait, really? I would have sworn there is one in formation with the Falcon and the U-Wing....
