My favourite piece has always been the picture below. The reason behind this is simple: it was my first introduction to Star Wars, which featured on the cover of the VHS I watched as a kid. It's really quite a simplistic piece compared to many of the other posters I've seen: not much is going on, yet it captures the key elements of the story perfectly. It also features Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character who was to become my favourite in the series, very prominently. Whenever I look at this picture it brings back the emotions and memories I experienced when I first sat down to watch it, in a room on my own, all those years ago. My parents had bought the VHS in the hopes that it would keep me quiet for a couple of hours. It certainly did. I've rarely been as enchanted by any other movie.

This was my first "Star Wars" poster. I got it at the late, lamented Paperback Booksmith ("Dedicated to the fine art of browsing") at Middlesex Mall.

This is more because of nostalgia then anything else but I've always been fond of the 1995 VHS re-release covers.

I've long liked that Hildebrandt one. I'm also partial to this one by John Berkey:

This one. Walking into the cinema as a 7 year old to see this I can clearly remember it dominating the foyer. It really made me think that Vader was scary and indeed to a 7 year old he was in this film. Such a great piece of artwork though.

Seconded. Struzan may be the most consistent and possibly iconic Star Wars artist, but the Gone With the Wind style poster will always be the most aesthetic and epic feeling of the original posters. As much as it was a shame to see additional characters were airbrushed out, I think its final state has the best balance.

This doesn't depict the CT, but it does depict (rather well) my favourite chapter:

Those still give me chills. I wish we could have gotten PT and ST posters in this style as well.

The Empire Strikes Back definitely has the best theatrical poster out of the three OT films. It really captures the schmaltzy nature of the serials the trilogy owes its roots to.That said, Noriyoshi Ohrai's busy and (often) crowded Star Wars posters were always my favorite. In terms of minimalism, Ohrai's Return of the Jedi poster with R2 and C-3PO is really majestic.

Totally! I LOVE those too. Especially the HOPE one just screams magic! The way Luke and Lars Homestead are incoperated with is just magical. Do we find some nice High Rise versions?

It’s the original Gone With the Wind style, before Billy Dee complained and they put him and Boba Fett on it. Simple, beautiful. And also the original Luke, Leia SW one. The GWTW poster though is still breathtaking.

I remember there was a variation of this one used in newspaper ads during the first release in 1983. Like "Jaws", there was a blurb below the listings that read, "May be too intense for very young children." I found a copy of the ad; it's tough to read but it's there:
