This is a sound-enough virus policy but I have to wonder about whether the various leagues will think it’s economically feasible to operate without stadium income, which is bound to be tied up in just how reliant they are on advertising and distribution deals. Certainly I have trouble seeing, say, the MLS operating without gates.

Anyway my point is this will be the summer of golf ascendency. Socially distant of necessity, crowds were only ever a problem to be overcome. :p

Yep. UCI really didn't take long to look at the calendar and make the shift. It didn't hurt that ASO owns the Vuelta's organizer, either...

ESPN is desperate for programming, and Disney in total is desperate for revenue. There's incentive to get something on TV/Streaming.

Here is the interview where Dr. Fauci discusses how to bring back sports:

Certainly looks more promising then it did two weeks ago but obviously so many hoops need to be cleared even if they were to play at any stadiums or in the case of the MLB potentially at their spring training facilities.

Edit: I am starting to edge toward the belief that sports coming back could be in the public best interests assuming everything else is in place that we need since while the shelter in places/shutdowns are slowly going to get lifted over the next few months (or at least that us hope they are) the social distancing guidelines are going to be in place as the public will continue encouraged staying at home as much as possible for well at least several months. Having live sports on TV will give people reasons to stay at home during that time period especially since I really don't see how any type of major TV show or movie production can continue to at least the fall if not longer. Plus it could be a emotional lift as well again long as it's not taking away resources away that is needed on the front lines and at least so far, all leagues are admitting they won't start up again until the peak is over with but also the general public has access to what it needs (testing/tracing/treatment/protection etc) and according to an article published on ESPN, they are working now with the CDC and other government health agencies to not only give them the thumbs up to start up again but also how to do it the safest way possible.

We'll just have to have Lou Pinella give a seminar on how to show emotions while social distancing

Those bases will have to be disinfected afterwards, though.

Anyone got any fun, random sports stats to throw out there?

I think it's amazing that the Florida Marlins have never lost a playoff series. 6-0 with two World Series!

I miss those two so much. :(

And I’m not optimistic, I think we’ll be doing well to have basketball on time this year and it would take close to a miracle to have football.

I think a lot of it has to do with what happens over the next six weeks. I am more optimistic then I was two weeks ago that at least baseball might have some sort of season at their Spring Training facilities but so many hurdles have to be cleared first. I am less sure about the NBA restarting since I don't think there will be enough ramp up time to get everyone back in game shape to have any type of playoff format say in July while I think the NHL is done simply due to logistics as you have too many players coming from other countries to have everyone back and ready to play again this summer. Far as the football goes, I think they are kinda tied with other sports leagues. If other leagues are able to restart and it goes okay, I think the chances of football this fall in some form increases. But if all other leagues cancel then I am hard pressed to see how football will be played this fall.

One positive right now is these leagues are apparently working along side the CDC & NIH about how to restart their leagues without not endangering their employees but also not to take away resources needed on the front lines. Plus too again I think it could be seen almost a public service as it will give reasons for people to stay home this summer and fall instead of being bored and take risks just because. And if you believe the study out of Harvard University, intermediate social distancing will most likely will be the norm for our long term future (particularly if no vaccine or treatment is found) therefore herd immunity by exposure will need to happen but in controlled ways. Having sports back without fans could be a good way to see how herd immunity could work n a controlled environment. Not sure if the players would want to be such guinea pigs but perhaps they will see it as being low risk compared to the possibility of their entire seasons getting scrapped and perhaps their leagues folding.

The Red Sox title in '04 came 18-years after their last pennant-winning season in '86, and of course it broke the 86-year drought of their last title in 1918.
