Census MAC. Short for macaroni or an acronym for macaroni and cheese?

I've never heard "MAC" by itself, always "mac and cheese". My gut says that if it were an acronym pedants would've been moaning about the redundancy in the latter expression for decades (the way people get in a fit about "ATM machine"), not just since some random YouTuber tweeted about it in 2018.

 

I see MAC by itself and I think about the cosmetics brand.

 

it's mac and cheese, therefore it represents the macoroni element only. no one on the planet says, im gonna have some mac tonight! unless youre a complete weirdo

Chili mac was a staple in US Air Force chow halls. Pardon me, "Dining Facilities."

 

MAC is both a cosmetics firm here in the UK and it's a Machine Authorization Code - you need this to switch broadband providers.

My family says it all the time. Are we having mac tonight? Put some more mac on my plate. The cheese is implied, no one has dry macaroni unless they're making a necklace.

You underestimate laziness. Lazy folksiness. We shorten terms all the time.

 

The best is still "is a hot dog a sandwich?" You learn a lot about a person if they're able to articulate their answer to that one: where they stand on linguistics, where they believe the metaphysical essence of philosophical categories resides, whether or not they oppose the Soviet invasion of Hungary during the revolution, things of this nature. With MAC/mac we learn only that they don't call it Kraft Dinner, and so presumably aren't Canadian.

but when you say that, does Mac mean Mac and cheese, or is MAC an acronym for Mac and cheese. That’s the crux of this stupid argument.

 

If mac means macaroni and cheese, mac and cheese would be macaroni and cheese and cheese. I think that is weird, but also support double cheese.

 

Hot dogs are not sammiches.

 

Honestly I see it both ways.
