Not really. From what I hear it's just dancing, even if suggestive. People seem to think that there are laws against that. There are not-- otherwise Netflix couldn't have released it.

I mentioned in another thread that I was exposed to this world as a kid because I was dragged to my brother's dance recitals, competitions, etc. This is a very common sort of thing and I was surprised by the reaction the poster got. I also heard that the movie makes it clear it's not endorsing such behavior. I hope this culture finally gets the scrutiny it deserves, but I'm not optimistic. While I understand discomfort with the film employing young actors to dance like that, people seem to be mad only at the director and Netflix rather than at the reality they're depicting.

Is there perhaps just a teensy bit of hypocrisy in not acknowledging that young girls would still be exposed to much of what the movie sets out to criticize, even if this movie didn't exist at all? They can see it all around them at school, parties, movies, music videos, it's everywhere. Why not have at least one movie that tells them why they shouldn't just cave in to all the peer pressure that's around them, the unspoken expectations of the very society that they live in?
In most modern societies young girls are still generally being expected to conform to binarist gender roles, and also to start emulating older girls/teenagers in order to feel appreciated or whatever. I mean, the movie shows just how easy it is to fall for it when these young girls constantly crave attention and recognition on social media.
The movie takes a mirror at so many of the things that are wrong and damaging in our society. Don't blame the messenger.

As it's turning into a big 'deal' I've considered it (read reviews about the content issues already) but I'm also not seeing terribly positive reviews from it (from the non-kneejerk responses). So I've got low motivation about that as it seems more like a run of the mill movie (in quality) that is getting people really upset, not a very good movie that is getting people really upset. That's not much of a selling point.

My thoughts on this whole thing:

    1) The Movie: the movie itself is not as problematic as its critics make it out to be. That said, this doesn't mean the movie isn't problematic at all. The movie's intent is good, but it does use children to dance suggestively (I'm sorry Even, the dancing is worse than you think it is). I, personally, would not be comfortable watching this movie. All that said, I don't understand who the audience of this movie is. I think everyone agrees that child sexualization is wrong. Who was this movie made for?

    2) Netflix: Netflix's poster advertising the film was absolutely pedobait and everyone who called it out was 100% right to do so. I'm not linking it here but you're free to look it up. It's bad. There is no defense you can make about the poster. None that I will accept, anyways.

    3) The Critics on Twitter: They've gone way overboard. they don't need to bring up cuties every day as a response to everything netflix tweets out. They don't need to send hate towards the director. This movie isn't going to increase child trafficking and qanon folk are definitely approaching this in bad faith.

    4) The defenders: Don't kneejerk defend it just because chuds are attacking it. Don't be an NPC, please. This movie isn't as bad as they're making it out to be, but it is a little problematic.

Maybe. I doubt I'd be shocked, though. I was just saying that a major streaming platform isn't hosting a movie with illegal content.

I think it's more likely the poster was meant to generate controversy and attention than attract pedophiles. Without it the movie would not have been in the top ten in the U.S.

I don't think anything in the movie is illegal, yeah.

As for the poster, that could be true, but it's also a "Netflix bad" situation

    I've mentioned this before....
I don't understand how people react to things anymore.
Netflix had problems for Cuties and it had problems for the dark elf episode of Community.
    Which is fine.
Then they put on a comedy of the 90s in which people literally throw up at the idea of kissing a transwoman -in a supposedly funny scene!?- and nobody gives a **** ?

The Community episode was pulled by the producers (Sony? Dan Harmon? Not sure), not Netflix. And it was a preemptive thing; no one was calling for it to be taken down AFAIK.

Personally, I don't care about this movie, and I don't care about this controversy with Netflix. I'm not even planning on watching it. However, I think there are 2 ironic points regarding the controversy surrounding this movie, "Cuties":

1- We can hear people and critics say that this movie is a way to criticize society and its darkside. However, some of those critics have to remain consistent with themselves since some of those same defenders are the same critics that have slammed the movie Joker last fall for being "too brutal" and "too provocative" while this movie is also a critic of society and its dark sides...

    https://www.foxnews.com/media/washi...SvNxWrc5eoMPZ063PXqJHcRYwkHtRbU7lH75_YaYu1T1M

2- Ironically, the trend or movement #CancelNetflix on Twitter happens almost at the same time as Netflix is releasing the documentary "Social Dilemna", talking about the dark side of social media as Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc. and their harmful effects on society and its well-being, by causing even more divisions among people, which may end up in Civil War. Now, Netflix is getting canceled by those same social media (especially Twitter) that it is trying to denounce in its new documentary.

Those double standards, huh @3sm1r ?

For those who want to see the original French poster, which is very much tamer, you can Google "Mignonnes poster" - I doubt anyone here could possibly have a problem with it but won't post it just to be on the safe side...

    Ok but my point stands.
I find it ridiculous that there are several woke complaints involving Netflix while nobody discuss the elephant in the room, that is an openly transphobic movie that in today's standards should be too much even for a conservative audience.
This can be seen as whataboutism, and it probably is, but it just seems silly to me.

What movie are you talking about? I have a vague recollection of such a scene.

Anyway, a for-profit company is never going to be morally consistent. There aren't massive protests for trans rights, so a comedy with a transphobic scene isn't going to be taken down.

    Ace Ventura: Pet detective.

I am really very far from being woke, and for example I don't give a damn about showing all Italians as mafia guys or pizza makers, and I'm tolerant toward many other "problematic" stuff concerning movies. I generally don't care.

Still, even I find that movie unacceptable today.

As I think I've said too many times before, Ace Ventura as a series is rife with problems, from the general objectification of women and glorification of sex to one of the most racist depictions of Africa since the black-and-white Tarzan films.

Hollywood has been sexualizing adolescents/kids for a long time, but for some reason the Netflix logo makes it seem more sinister to me, also the kids look even younger than usual. I remember watching the film Thirteen when I was a teenager myself (which had a fairly sexualized promo poster irc) and thinking it was really profound, but haven't revisited it since. I think we are open to accepting more deviancy in art when we think a project is the vision of one artist, but when it gets branded that makes it even grosser. Is the point of it really artistic expression, or is it just commercialism?

And yeah, it looks like Republicans are trying to make a big deal out of it.

Just to be clear, tho, the movie was made in France by a French filmmaker whose last name isn't Besson, and Netflix isn't really a Hollywood studio... despite being a member of the MPAA

I do think, broadly, we're seeing a collision of two trends: the increasing sexualization of marketing to adults, and the ever-expanding "tween" category, which is really just moving back towards the idea of children as adults with very short stature.
