Paris is Burning is a 1990 documentary film about the ballroom culture in late 80s New York City. Primarily African-American, Latino, gay and transgender communities developed families where biological bonds failed. Out of this arose a few definitions:

Reading – A no-holds-barred approach to insulting and judging someone. When you've had it with someone, you read her or him.
Shade – A concealed double meaning, typically meant to critique.

Therefore, the library is a metaphorical place where one conducts 'reads' on other users. An appropriate read is both deeply amusing, cutting, witty, but simultaneously comes from a place of respect and admiration. This is the only way a 'read' can function' without being vindictive or vicious. Please watch this video before conducting a read on another user.

there is supposed to be some truth to it, ct. suppose bacon does taste good, and smells great in the morning. you have no way of knowing, and therefore this is an ineffective attempt.
