Yes! I was disappointed about the lack of anecdotes.

    1. Zen and the Art of Xenophobia - Five Iron Frenzy
This ska band is my favorite band. This is a typical song of theirs, aka critical of American Christian jingoism. Especially love this lyrics:
"Crank your phasers up to slaughter/turn your wine back into water/when you play this song Al Qaeda wins/and Jesus was American"

    2. Rusty Cage - Johnny Cash

It's a cover, like a lot of great Cash songs in his later days. But it shows how much Johnny literally rocked

    3. Army - Ben Folds Five

"Well I thought about the Army/dad said "son, you're ****ing high" is one of the greatest opening lines in a song ever. Bem Folds is now a solo artist, and my favorite living one

    4. The Rascal King - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

A ska song about a real, corrupt Boston politician of yore. Gotta love it. I love all kinds of story songs

    5. Where'd You Go - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Another Bosstones song, this one showing off their signature clever lyrics. And who doesn't love a song that appeared in Clueless

    6. Get Your Riot Gear - Five Iron Frenzy

A song about police brutality and how police are the cause of riots, from the 90s but obviously just as relevant now. It's also one of those "swing songs from a ska band" that could only have happened in the 90s

My vote went to Flagpole Sitta, for it’s the only song there I immediately knew/recognized.

    Part 2

    1. The Mercy Seat - Johnny Cash

As mentioned, this is a Nick Cave song. But it's one of the best Cash covers. Hurt gets all the attention, but I like this one even better. It's obviously about an inmate on death row. Cash heavily influenced my generous view of inmates and being anti death-penalty. Here's a great example of his focus on that

    2. Say it Ain't So - Weezer

This song is one of Weezer's best, tapping into angst like they used to do so well. This one is about Rivers' alcoholic dad. And has a great bass line I used to love to play.

    3. Robots - The Golden Republic

Here's a band no one has heard of because they only had one album, but they were a great neo glam band of sorts from Kansas City. This is a song about consumerism

    4. She's So Cold - The Golden Republic

An even more neo glam song. This one I purely love for the sexy glam nature of it

    5. Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger

This is a 90s alt rock song about nothing really, but it freaking rocks.

    6. Common People - Pulp

The ultimate Brit pop song from the ultimate Brit Pop band. Really the entirety of Different Class could be on this playlist, but this stands in. The ultimate common person's anthem.

I love Common People, but went with Mercy Seat. Possibly because it was the first time I heard it, so it had a more intense impact.

I'm trying to decide whether to have some kind of theme to my list, or just go full on "flea market bargain bin." Isn't flea market capitalism supposed to be a good thing? I mean--

    I--

    :(

I have some serious Cash bias, but I’m going to listen to them all before I vote.

Also, feel free to put me on the list.

Instinctively we all love to see songs we already know in a playlist -it's natural to look for something we have in common with the playlist owner- but we should actually hope for the exact opposite, and almost "force" ourselves to be curious about new songs 'cause very often it really pays out.

And those who make the playlist should not be afraid to propose non conventional stuff for fear of them not being liked.

So you're saying I should have included a Garth Brooks song to make people listen to that.

I think it would be a little hard to make people to listen to Garth Brooks via Spotify.

Oh that's right! I forget because I own all his albums and uploaded them to Google Music that he's not available via streaming.

I completely agree, but Common People is just the best song in sj's list. I listened to all of the tracks three times. Had to YouTube Harvey Danger, because on Spotify it's not available in my region. I quite liked the Ben Folds song and he's not getting enough votes. sj knows what I think of Johnny Cash... and with ska I'm afraid I'm a bit of a purist. Weezer never appealed to me. I like the music of the Golden Republic, but the singer doesn't do it for me. It's all down to personal taste. These are all fine artists. Pulp is just better!
