The Hobbit are a collection of the worst stereotypes people have about Hollywood put into a single movie trilogy.

I really like the part where they have dinner in Bilbo's house and start singing, reminds me of the old animated series. They went overboard with CGI, most of it looks bad. But the scene where they down the river in barrels is amazing, so bad it's good. If Jackson had gone HAAM like that for the whole trilogy it'd be better for it.

An underappreciated piece of cultural commentary by Jackson. Kili is like an insignificant reply guy meeting an e-girl (Tauriel) irl, who is beautiful, powerful, and 4 ft taller than him, essentially a different species. Avatar did this first with Jake Sully meeting Neytiri, Cameron leading the way as always.

Whichever franchise it is, it isn't that one you like. Yes you. That franchise. Your favorite one. Not that one.

io9 paid me one hundred dollars for this post, but it will make about five times that much in ad revenue as various people on Twitter argue its merits for the next week. In five years the total erosion of all barriers to critical appraisal will render my once-controversial opinion apparently mainstream, and rebuttals of it will be similarly commonplace. The thing you like will continue to set records at the box office, but not because you like it. You are irrelevant, although you will believe that your stalwart defenses of a multibillion dollar licensed property are rebellious. My post has been attributed to "staff" for the last four years because of an acquisition by yet another venture capital company. It is eventually plagiarized and turned into a listicle, artificially reigniting the argument. The ouroboros gnaws endlessly at its own tail, ensuring that the merciful temporary oblivion of Ragnarök never comes.

I still say Middle Earth, not Star Wars or the MCU, should be running away with this.

    1. Star Wars even with the few misgivings. The quality of the GL saga and everything Filoni has added to it, is unreachable to me.
    2. Harry Potter (extremely well fabricated and thought out story)
    3. Jurassic Park (I actually love all of them)
    4. Marvel Cinematic Universe (I was a "hater" during Phase 1, softened with Phase 2, love Phase 3 - GOTG 1&2, Thor Ragnarok and Avengers 3&4 are awesome)
    5. Middle Earth (LOTR movies are pretty great, I love the Silmarillion, I couldn't read the LOTR books and the Hobbit movies are bad)
    6. Star Trek (haven't really watched anything but the New Generation show and movies and the reboot movies, they're ok)
    7. Game Of Thrones (good show, meh books for me)
    8. DC Extended Universe (many bad movies, love some of them - if the Nolan trilogy was part of it it would rank 4-5 spots higher)

I have to be honest.... we are into a few of the solo MCU super hero films but overall I cant get into the Avengers at all. So, I agree.

LOTR and Star Wars are my 1a and 1b best things ever. Right behind those are The Matrix, Alien & Aliens, Back to the Future and Terminator 1 and Terminator 2.

Can you add a franchise that doesn't have a few really bad, cringe-worthy installments? I would vote in that case. Like I'd almost vote for LOTR, but then I remember that super painful sequence of Legolas jumping endlessly in that one Hobbit movie with the bat things and it's like... no.

    There is an exercise.

What franchise has the MOST entries without a significant misstep?

Is there a franchise with more then 2 or 3 entries that doesn't have a stinker in there?

    John Wick?

    ?

I'm sticking with Middle-earth. There have been some missteps, but even the bad movies have moments of sublime beauty interspersed with the garbage.

I wish I could say it was enough.

    By Hobbit 3, it wasn't.

    Sorry.

Star Wars and Marvel have the least number of ‘entries that should never have existed.’

    Jurassic Park has the most.

It's nothing earth-shattering but all the Mission Impossible films are fine.
