The Hollywood Reporter also has a good article explaining the "unrenewals" of many shows

They'll have to sell the Quibi content for parts, nobody really wants the 10 minute chunk episodes anyway.

Katzenberg is going to say all the time that COVID did it but really it was just a terrible idea. I keep seeing Quibi content advertised in mobile ads too.

They don't own the content- or at least they don't own the full-length, non-episodic versions of their content. The creators retain those rights.

after 2 years, though, from what I remember, it would be Quibi's content before that. if they sold it today they could still sell the content for like a few more years.

They'd probably be able to sell the episodic form rights.

Lol what a bunch of idiots. They own nothing then..the only thing I am interested in is the real episode-length versions of a few shows.

I just want 'em to release Keifer Sutherland The Fugitive on a non-Quibi platform ASAP.

WWE also did content for Quibi. You don't think they had some sort of clause in their agreement about them owning the content they filmed for Quibi in case of a situation like this?

My best guess is in 2 years we'll see an "escaped from Quibi" content rush although I don't know what a sale relatively soon would do to it.

It was intended to be a creator-friendly policy to attract higher profile projects/talent.Seemed to work, at least for a start-up.

People could basically make a feature length movie that could be broken up into episode-length installments. Then they let Quibi populate its service with new episodic content with them for X number of years. Then, after that period is up, the creators can resell the feature length version to other platforms or home video. Meanwhile Quibi has moved onto the next project (in theory).

It was not a good idea though. I do love to see Katzenberg fail though.

Quibi in general or the episodes-now-own-film-later model? Because the latter is a pretty fantastic idea, IMO. Great way for creators to get a film funded without having to sign the rights away forever to a normal studio or streaming platform deal. I rather suspect that, had YouTube Red endured, you'd probably have seen something similar on that platform (though likely without the long term rights being left to the creators, which makes the Quibi arrangement even more progressive).

I just mean the Quibi model and platform. And it was stupid and arrogant of Katzenberg to think the model was so brilliant that he didn't need the content. I mean it's great for the creators, they got paid plus they can keep the rights. They're laughing all the way to the bank.

Definitely agree with that part. Guess we'll never know if this idea would have failed just as terribly in normal circumstances

Well, they still had the content for years (or maybe they keep the episodics and 2 years was just when the full version could be monetized by creators? i forget). Clearly a film-turned-episodes process will only produce finite series, so they were likely intending for the creator-friendly model to entice a sustainable turnover rate of new content since, in theory, a Quibi user would be finishing a series in a week or less (if you figure they watched at least one 10 min episode on their commute to work and a second on the way home, they'd consume the equivalent of a feature-length project in only a few days).
