I heard the Stormtrooper boots were really slippery on the floors. You can see it in a deleted blooper scene where they keep slipping trying to crawl out of the hole they blast in the wall.

It always looked to me like the Stormtrooper boots were made with soles from ordinary British dress shoes of that era. I doubt they'd be very easy to walk in on those sets. And I suspect George Lucas & Ralph McQuarrie would've preferred something more futuristic-looking, such as rubber soles - which also would've been much more practical, but probably hard to obtain back then.

 

Although rubber soles wouldn't have provided that ominous "click, click, click" when marching in unison through Death Star corridors!

Turns out I was right: in SW and ESB the stormtrooper boots were white-painted Chelsea boots that (minus the paint) wouldn't be out of place on Savile Row.

I have to wonder who did the airbrushing on those photos to make Mark Hamill and Bob Anderson's prop lightsabers glow like that.
