not so long back we had lots of complaints about spam threads , well what the hell are these sigs? what's the point of them? Some of them are a great gigantic walls of text 50 times bigger than the post .. And they're repeated with every post. Would someone like to justify them?

I think gez is talking specifically about vcr and Viv. They do indeed had stupid sigs, one in reaction to the other I assume. Which is t petty at all.

I’m glad a solution has been presented.

Which is sort of ironic considering how you have one of the weirdest signatures I've seen:

It's what Pete said to me, after he gave me his address.

Admittedly this is why I turned off signatures, and it's a little frustrating (not that they are the exclusive culprits). I thought there was a line limit? Am I misremembering that?

Is there a wider issue here? Has vnc been affected by Vivec’s gravitational pull, and as such, slowly starting to orbit around him?

There was a line limit on Snowboards/IGN.

Just doing some tests, it seems there's still a hard-coded line limit, but if everything is in-line (i.e. without a carriage return) it may not be limiting it as effectively, especially if there are size tags.

    So where
    test1
    test2
    test3
    test4
    test5
    test6
    doesn't work,
    test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1test1 test1
    does.

Obviously, yes, these are all circumvented by turning signatures off on the user end, but still somewhat less than ideal, I think.

Edit: Ah, in fact the problem is entirely carriage returns. For example, I was able to make my signature chapter 1 of Moby Dick by simply removing the paragraph breaks.

Looks like the signature limit is set to 5 lines but maximum printable characters isn't set. (It's part of the User Group Permissions settings).

There we go. What was the character limit in IGN, 250 characters? We needn't necessarily use the same limit, but that'll help address the issue of essay-length signatures.

I think it was 3 lines - not sure on characters.

I think in the IGN days the limit was 5 lines, 250 characters. Don't hold me to that.

Well, at least we've said no every time someone has asked if signatures can be updated to allow images or GIFs. It could be worse. :p

That's for sure. I don't think we had control over signature content/length on the IGN boards as that was probably set by the board programmers. However after seeing images in sigs when we mods were testing on the temp boards I'm glad we shut that option off.

It was that and an admin (Miana Kenobi?) demonstrating they could be used for YouTube embeds with “They’re Taking the Hobbits to Isengard,” as I recall.

I’d be more than happy to return to 5/250, no BBCode, no CSS effects, no emojis. I like minimalistic design (yes, I would get rid of user badges and stars as well)

I remember that. The images also slowed the thread loads down.

I think BBCode and emoticons are fine. Just put reasonable limits on size.

I find signatures useful for linking to threads or challenges that I am hosting on this site as well as to a list of my fanfiction that can be read on this site. Signatures are also pretty common across Internet forums so I think they are things that viewers of these forums should expect to see as the default unless they alter their settings. I don't see any negatives of signatures as long as there are reasonable restrictions on size and length of the signatures, but just having signatures doesn't seem to be an inherent problem to me. Rather to me it is a positive that enhances the community aspect of a forum.
