although there were plenty of good ones, my first thought went to the truly ****ing dreadful johnny depp film transcendence, from 2014. i was in the only person in the cinema watching it at like noon on a tuesday, the week after it came out. worst use of a sick day ever.

remember the day itself better than the movie. i think he got shot and tried to copy himself at a factory in a corn field, or something.

The trailer with the incomplete sound mix was the only good thing about that movie.

C-130's have been in production since the mid-50's, new ones are still coming off the assembly line, there are hundreds in the scrapyards in Arizona, and Hollywood still can't get the interior right. One of these days I may watch that film just to see how bad it is.

I have been meaning to watch that for a while and I see that it is on Amazon, so I guess I will this week.

I didn't get even five minutes into that movie. I saw Portman and Isaac together, and immediately stopped. I knew I didn't want to watch them for two hours.

I should not have allowed the Annihilation recommendations to go unchallenged. I should have warned you.

Sorry you didn’t like it. Your loss [face_dunno]

OTOH i couldn’t stand Lucy. That whole %-of-brain thing is just... no. Too dumb for me.

Lucy is so dumb. But that reminds me of Transcendence, which is also dumb, but at least subverted the evil AI trope.

I didn’t see Lucy but they made a mistake emphasizing that angle so much in the trailers, it was unintentionally hilarious. Like, I’m sorry, you cannot unironically do the “unused portion of the brain” plot line anymore. It’s so exhausted that in 1962 Nikita Khrushchev proposed adding a unilateral ban on all such plot lines as part of the negotiations to end the Cuban Missile Crisis. Unfortunately this was scrapped in favor of the compromise measure of the withdrawal of US nuclear arsenals in Turkey, and the world is worse for his having blinked.

Imagine the collective headache of intro psych or intro neuroscience instructors all over the world, trying to explain that that whole “10% of your brain” thing is a bunch of nonsense, only to consistently be met with BUT IN “LUCY”!

Lucy from Charlie Brown probably used more than 10 percent of her brain to fool Chuck with that football and get all his money.

Does Yesterday count as sci fi? It’s like a feature length twilight zone.

StarTrek Beyond was fun. Kind of like an OS episode. I liked the first and third on the new ST films.

May I ask why you don't consider it science fiction?

I have always advocated a big tent approach to sci fi. When I first joined the JCC I would get a lot of "Star Wars isn't sci fi, you dolt: it's space opera. It's space fantasy," to which I like to answer: "shut your stupid pie hole you ****ing nerd." But I'm all about inclusion, building bridges, so I get that there are other points of view.

Agreed SW is sci fi it just has fantasy elements. It's not hardcore sci fi like Blade Runner or 2001 but it's still sci fi.
