‘Mad Max’ Spinoff ‘Furiosa’ A Go At Warners With George Miller Directing & Anya Taylor-Joy In Title Role; Chris Hemsworth & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Along For Ride

George Miller told Deadline about Furiosa having a deep backstory in the Mad Max universe, and now we’ll finally get to see it: Warner Bros. is in advanced development with Furiosa, a spinoff feature of Miller’s multi-Oscar winning blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road about the renegade character (played in that film by Oscar winner Charlize Theron) who was a notable force in Max’s survival in the desert.

The standalone movie will reveal the origins of Furiosa and be played by Glass actress Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role. The movie will track the genesis of Furiosa before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky in Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star in a movie that Miller will also direct, co-write and produce with his longtime Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell. Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner will produce.

Miller penned the script with Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Nico Lathouris. Miller’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes such longtime Australian collaborators as production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on “Mad Max: Fury Road,” as well as first assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris.

Taylor-Joy recently finished filming Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho and is currently filming Robert Eggers’ The Northman. She was recently seen as the lead in the romantic comedy Emma, based on the Jane Austen novel. Her additional features include the sci-fi thrillers Split and Glass from M. Night Shyamalan. Beginning later this month, she can be seen starring as a chess prodigy in the miniseries The Queen’s Gambit.

Hemsworth is star of Marvel’s Avengers and Thor franchise; the latest sequel Thor: Love & Thunder filming next March in Australia and in pre-production currently.

Abdul-Mateen II starred as the iconic Super-Villain Black Manta in James Wan’s billion-dollar blockbuster Aquaman. He is currently filming the fourth installment in The Matrix series and can be seen as Bobby Seale in Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, in theaters now and streaming on Friday. Next up, he will star in Universal/MGM’s Candyman, releasing 2021. His other work includes roles in the horror-thriller Us, The Greatest Showman. Abdul-Mateen recently won an Emmy Award for his performance in the acclaimed limited series Watchmen.

Taylor-Joy is repped by CAA, United Agents, and Fred Toczek at Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson. Hemsworth is repped by CAA and attorney Matt Galsor at Greenberg Glusker. Abdul-Mateen II is repped by WME, M88, Ziffren Brittenham LLP, Rogers&CowanPMK.

New Mad Max movie starring Chris Hemsworth to be biggest film made in NSW

Premier Gladys Berejiklian says NSW has cemented itself as Australia's cultural capital, after revealing a blockbuster new instalment to the Mad Max franchise will be filmed in her state.

The movie, starring Chris Hemsworth, is set to be the biggest to be made in NSW.

Director George Miller said the movie, titled Furiosa, would be released in mid-2023 and filmed "all over NSW", including parts of Broken Hill.

"This has always been our home, Sydney and NSW, and we have shot so much here," he said.

"It means we are keeping the really brilliant talent here who previously went overseas."

The post-apocalyptic action film will be released in cinemas, unlike many which have gone straight to streaming services during COVID-19.

Hemsworth, who recently moved to Sydney from Byron Bay to film the new Thor movie, said like most Australians, he grew up watching Mad Max and felt a "lot of pressure" to do the franchise proud.

"It's something I'm going to put my heart and soul into because it really is for me, out of everything I've done, the biggest pinch-myself moment because I've grown up watching it."

The actor said the fact the film was being made on home soil was a huge driving factor for him signing on.

The first three Mad Max films (released between 1979 and 1985) launched the career of actor Mel Gibson and the first instalment held the record for the most profitable film ever created for a decade.

Hemsworth said he couldn't give anything away about his character in Furiosa but said he might give Gibson a call for advice.

A fourth Mad Max film, Fury Road, was released in 2015 and grossed around $US 375 million ($486 million) at the box office.

Producer Doug Mitchell said it wouldn't be possible to make the film in NSW without state and federal government incentives.

NSW Treasurer Dom Perrottet said Furiosa was being partly paid for by the "Made in NSW" fund, which was worth $175 million per film over five years.

"The reality is, if you want to make a movie in Australia, you don't want to make it in Queensland, you want to make it in NSW," Mr Perrottet said.

"We are by far the most generous when it come to film investment."

Mr Mitchell concurred and said no other state could match the sum.

Ms Berejiklian said the movie would create 850 local jobs and inject at least $350 million into the state's economy.

"Most importantly it reinforces NSW as the economic capital of Australia, but also, I believe, the cultural capital of Australia," she said.

Federal Minister for Arts Paul Fletcher said Australia was experiencing a boom in the film industry thanks to the country's virtual elimination of COVID-19.

A location incentive established by the federal government, worth $540 million over eight years, had brought 22 productions down under so far, Mr Fletcher said.

"And there's no more iconic Australian franchise than Mad Max," he said.

The last instalment in the Mad Max series, Fury Road, was supposed to be filmed around Broken Hill but unusual rainfall meant the landscape was too green and the film had to be relocated to Namibia in Africa.

I didn't set out to make a big, epic movie. It's a story I wanted to tell, but as it turns out it's just got a lot of different scenes. The one thing I can say about it, Fury Road happened over three days, I mean, within the film happened over three days and two nights. This is a saga, happens over many years, so there's a lot of different elements to it, but that's all I should say.

Unless I missed something, I haven't seen any threads talking about the upcoming Furiosa film from George Miller, so I just posted a couple of the most important bits of news from the last couple months. Among other things, Junkie XL is returning to score the film.

I cannot wait for this. Furiosa is probably my most anticipated upcoming film, alongside Robert Eggers' The Northman (which, funny enough, also happens to star Anya Taylor-Joy).

George Miller is a truly phenomenal action director, and like George Lucas, I admire his mythic storytelling qualities. Like Lucas' Star Wars, Miller's Mad Max outings embody philosophies of Jospeh Campbell, but Miller is less interested in a strict continuity and his installments (particularly the three sequels) all play very loosely as sequels, instead prioritizing their ability to feel like legends or campfire stories passed down from generation to generation about this hero Max that wanders – and then retreats back into – the Wasteland that helped when nobody else would.

I cannot wait to see what he does now with a younger Furiosa in the focal role in this "Saga" of a film, as he described above; I adored the Charlize Theron incarnation in the previous film. And it is fitting to see the franchise return back home to Australia, after having to shift gears to South Africa to shoot Fury Road – which is probably tied with Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin as my favorite film of the previous decade.

Bring on Furiosa.

I hope for the very same. It would be against type for him, which I am all for.

Also, unrelated, but I very much hope that we get Bruce Spence in this movie as a pilot with no relation to The Road Warrior's Gyro Captain or Beyond Thunderdome's Jebediah the Pilot.

Considering that the Indy trilogy fits more into the adventure subgenre, yeah, I'd say Fury Road stands alongside Aliens as the finest action film ever made.

George Miller can do no wrong; I'm anticipating Furiosa more than any other movie on the horizon.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlize Theron are both great choices to embody the character. I'm hoping since he's saying it's spanning "decades" we can get Charlize at some point too and they're just keeping it under wraps. Taylor-Joy is no slouch either though.
