There are no good holidays. They're all just excuses to take time off from work/school and consume.

 

Pineapple doesn't belong on Pizza.

I'm gonna get pineapple on pizza tonight. I think I might try jalapenos with it.

 

The week starts on Monday, not Sunday.

Coffee made at home is the best.

 

But . . . the excuse to take time off from work and consume is what makes them good . . .

I'm not anti-having-an-excuse-to-take-time-off-work. I just think everything around it is unnecessary. I would be totally cool with having a four day weekend every month or two that was just designated a federal holiday for people to take time off (actually more than this; we need a shorter work week, but that's a different topic). No need to bring costumes and trees and turkeys and greeting cards into it, which just amounts to noise.

 

On the other hand, quite a few people won't actually be able to log mentally out of work if they only get four day rest intervals.

 

Then 7-10 days off every eight weeks. The amount of time isn't strictly relevant to my point, which is that the trappings of (the existing) holidays are archaic, silly, and generally unnecessary.

I can't remember the last time I treated a big holiday like more than another day excepting those times when other people roped me into things. I often don't notice the date except when I look at my phone anyway, so they often come and go without fanfare.

Downtown L.A. really didn't need the L.A. Live area that's sprung up over-the-years/Staples Center; Lakers & Kings ought to have remained in Inglewood, goddamnit.
