I hadn’t heard of that holiday. The dawn service sounds lovely.

I've heard of ANZAC day but know little about how it is commemorated in AU/NZ. The Dawn Service sounds amazing.

I wish I were the type of person who could get up at 6 am. It's so peaceful, but I just cant do it. Speaking of which, my insomnia is acting up again and has been for the past week (it's probably something to do with the stress I was feeling last week). It's starting to drive me crazy. I did very little this weekend because I feel like my body needed it (plus the weather was kinda ugly and restrictions are getting tighter) but it hasnt helped the sleeping situation. It's about my usual bedtime now and I don't work till tomorrow evening (so I'm hesitant to take anything to help me sleep because theres no reason I need to be up tomorrow morning). So I'm debating just staying up because I know I'm just going to be laying in bed listening to audiobooks for a few hours. At the same time, laying in bed listening to audiobooks is what my body (and brain) wants if it cant have sleep.

Thank you everybody for all the virtual hugs.

@Kit' is ANZAC Day kind of like Veterans Day here?

I have a lot of days like that. Last week, I literally couldn’t sleep between 8 a.m. of one day and 6 p.m. of the next because every time I started to drop off, I would have mental images that made me jolt awake in terror. I nightly get a couple of hours of sleep for one reason or another, like Friday night when I couldn’t sleep after less than two hours.

AT LAST AT LAST AT LONG LAST they're opening vaccinations for us 45-49 year-olds on Saturday!!! [face_party][face_party][face_party]

We're going to consume some of our Easter booze supplies in celebration now. See you tomorrow with what promises to be a massive hangover.

Tomorrow, I will be two weeks post full vaccination. My plans for this weekend include hugging friends in the same condition when I go over for dinner.

This week is shaping up to be a carbon copy of last week (co-worker who got a concussion still cant look at a screen, which, I feel bad for the guy and want to help, but I can only help so much). I just want my yummy peach coolers, watch stupid tv and go to bed. This week is going to turn me into an alcoholic.

My mental health is starting to slide into a dark place and I just don't know what to do.

I have a two year old I can lend you :D;)

My family has always been filled with people who wake with the dawn. Both of our kids have taken after my side of the family. However my husband is not one of those people. He doesn't really wake up until about 9am, so our kid's waking habits are the stuff of nightmares as far as he's concerned.

Yes, sort of. We have Remembrance Day on the 11th of November too, but ANZAC day is more important and gets a public holiday whereas Remembrance Day means reminding kids to stand of the minute's silence at 11am. Like Veteran's Day though it commemorates all wars and returned veterans (living and dead). Mostly it used to be a day where returned soldiers went out and got very drunk but only after 1pm, because that's when the pubs open. They stay closed in the morning so people can either go to Dawn Service or the more acceptable ones at 9am which are run by the RSL.

Also ANZAC Day is the only day on which it's legal to play Two-Up in some areas of Australia (and outside of a casino)

@Kit' I have a 29yo neighbor who wakes me up in the middle of the night. And I finally found out that it’s because he works the graveyard shift and 3 a.m. is his afternoon. The rest of his family works daytime shifts. So I never stop hearing loud and proud people because they overlap. And it’s louder in my bedroom than in my living room, so when I can’t sleep, I move to my living room. But I never sleep through the night without medication knocking me out.

Coincidently, I was discussing noisy neighbors with somebody today. The solution was soft silicone ear plugs and a loud alarm clock with vibrating bed shaker (used by the hard of hearing). I used the silicone earplugs and they make everything silent...so silent that I slept through my normal alarm clock. Hence the need for a vibrating pillow shaker. I work 11AM to 11PM and get home at midnight, so I can understand being up to 2 AM.

For those people who got their two shots...don't run off to a crowded pub just yet. I have been caring for COVID patient that got the virus a month after their second shot. Fortunately they are doing much better than people who didn't get the vaccine. Still remain cautious.

I’m still acting right now like I’ve not gotten any vaccines. Mask outside the house and social distancing.

FWIW, the CDC just updated their guidance for fully vaccinated people today: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html

I like the infographic. Next week, I’m attending a small outdoor gathering for a friend who recently made a momentous decision for his life. And I’ve got tickets to the opera, but the last time I went to the opera, I was the only one in my row and they’re still being that strict with their guidelines. At least this time, I have a +1 because my friend really loves Carmen and they’re doing an abbreviated version of it for the last production of the season.

On the earplugs matter, I have a very hard time sleeping with anything other than a pillow adjacent to my face or near my head, so I am more bothered by earplugs than my neighbors having screaming matches at 3 a.m.

Hang in there, @Briannakin. You made it this far, don't let go now that things are finally moving in the right direction [:D]

@Kit' For some reason I thought that ANZAC day was primarily a commemoration of the battle of Gallipoli. Isn't that a big thing in Australian collective memory?

Ugh. Thanks. I think it's more work getting me down but COVID isnt helping and we are still a ways away from "all vaccinated people can do XYZ thing". I think once my co-worker recovers (though I wouldnt be surprised if I'm doing his job next week too), I might take a few days off. I only work 4 days a week so it's not that hard to do what I did this weekend and get a 4 day weekend, but it's not enough. I need a vacation (though what's the point when there's nothing to do... besides save my sanity).

I also have an ear infection which isnt helping anything. I'm just a grump.

I recall the same thing from my World Wars classes.

I was going to rant about something else... and then I forgot what it was. The sleep deprivation is starting to encroach upon me. I should actually take something to fall asleep before I consider the night to be a lost cause.

Ear infections are the worst. Every time things are going very wrong, one of those pops up. I remember a friend taking me to the hospital after 20 minutes of us talking about her because she realized I wasn’t feeling well and it turned out to be the night my eardrum perforated. I hope you feel better.

You absolutely sound in need of a few days off. I know people just doing that after hard weeks or before a major deadline.

I'm officially old... I got a message today that vaccination of my group will start in May, and I was asked to answer whether I wanted them to offer me the vaccine or not. I did answer 'yes' but honestly I didn't expect my group to pop up until later this summer. Good thing is that my community get Pfizer.

Here, they’re now available to people over 16. So I’m only officially old because I keep getting ads for Senior Singles. I’m 40.

Today I woke up at my usual ungodly 5:30 a.m. but for once (and this hasn't happened in more than a year) I did manage to get back to sleep. I thought I'd be awake again for Chyntuquita o'clock, which is normally around 8 these days – because when did I EVER manage to sleep beyond 7:30?

Fast forward to 9:30 a.m., and I opened an eye to find Chyntuquita sleeping between Mr. Chyn and me. And that's where I left her. They're still happily snoozing away while I'm equally happily having my second morning coffee on an unusually quiet balcony.

    Good Friday FTW.

Coffee on a quiet balcony is always one of my favorite ways to start a morning. A little too cool here, just yet. Was terribly hot yesterday, and my apt is the top floor, so the hottest (between sun on the roof & heat from floors below). Air con hasn't come on yet, so I just turned on the fans and put on...a mumu! Yes, I am officially old, but it is lightweight seersucker, one size too big, and terribly comfortable. So phooey to the fashionistas.

The final group project has been wrapped up and the semester from hell is finally over.

For the first time, I don't even care about what grades I end up with. I'm just happy to be done with the most stressful semester I've ever had.

Maybe in your country/community but here they have so far been available for people over 65, people with diseases that potentially would make Covid life threatening no matter what - and people who have risk occupations such as working with health care etc.

I’m glad you’re able to be eligible now. It was back in winter that it was 65. The age range crept down every few weeks. I actually got it months later than some friends because I know a lot of schoolteachers from church and one friend got hers because her husband is a nurse and he could tell her when they had extras.
