Gaming E3 2021 (and Summer Game Fest) - Discussion Thread (Starts June 12th to June 15th)

Microsoft allowing people to play their games without the purchase of a console is huge. We all knew it was going to happen at some point but I didn't expect to happen just a few months after the release of their latest console. This could be perfect for me, somebody that only plays one or two games a year.

Edit: I’m a little underwhelmed by the offerings of HH Dorito Pope so far; if this sets them tone we might be in for a slow week and change. Understandable given the pandemic, but still.

Edit 2: Oh, and also Elden Ring I guess. Sure looks like every From game. Sure doesn't feel like people were getting overly obsessive about it for no reason.

 

The director's cut? Who was keeping Kojima from releasing his preferred cut of the game when it was originally released? Doesn't he run the company that created the game, the game that he complete control over?

 

It seems to mostly be an excuse to resell the game for higher end hardware rather than just upgrading it. It’s a downright Koei Tecmo sort of move.

Guy goes and makes an (admittedly brilliant) game in the 90's and he's treated like gaming's Mick Jagger...

 

He definitely needs a team telling him, for example, “what if there was, like, compelling gameplay here?”

 

I can only assume that Konami told him after MGS2 and 4 to maybe tone it down a bit, which is why 3 and 5 were considerably better.

 

Konami butchered the ending of 2 and was generally bad in terms of handling their franchises so I’m disinclined to give them any benefit of the doubt. Rather it seems like the old cautionary tale that games actually take a lot of decisions from a lot of people and are not auteur projects. See also: David “Emotions. That's weird, because the ending of MGS2 is one of the few things I liked about that game. Not so much the boss fight with Solidus, that was pants, but from a story POV the implication of something bigger with the Patriots was interesting to me.

 

No, I mean precisely the Solidus fight and all of that, they had a bunch of stuff cut from that sequence at the last minute because of 9/11.

 

Really hope that any additional content in the Death Stranding: Director's Cut finds its way into the PC release...

 

So 500 pieces of DLC to be announced, including cosmetic speedos?

 

Sometimes I feel like the only person that was genuinely enthralled with Death Stranding's gameplay for my entire 40+ hour playthrough.

I've never touched an MGS game. P.T. and Death Stranding were my entry points for him, so I don't have pre-existing connection to his work. But God, Death Stranding is easily my favorite game in years. There's nothing else like it. It's super relaxing to play, gorgeous to look at, and narratively right up my alley.

 

Japanese devs are usually quite happy to let you pay full price again regardless of the platform.

 

Honestly, I'd probably pay it.

I'm just worried it might be a straight up PS5 exclusive, and I have no desire or intention of getting a console.

The pre-E3 chatter indicates they'll probably announce their next AC game, but I can't imagine it'll drop this year since they still haven't even completed the DLC for Valhalla
