Patty Jenkins’ last movie was absolutely atrocious.

It might be because of studio interference.

She said she was granted absolute freedom for WW84. Studio was much more involved with the first one.

Fairly free to do the story she wants to but doesn't sound like it because her story will have fo fit in the SW story. Good to hear imo. Those days of Disney LFL giving directors free reign is clearly over under Chapek. Too many disasters. Now we see the commitment to the story.

Every near-future director is going to have to become a Filoni disciple too like Leslye Headland said if they want a SW project.

This is not that uncommon regardless of the franchise though. I'm glad that they are being transparent about it though. Hopefully, that means they are putting a lot of care on both sides into this next movie.

I love that we’re starting to hear more about this. I’m so damn ready for another movie I don’t know what to do with myself. I can’t wait for Celebration next year. :D

New Republic era really does make the most sense, and is the best era for T-65 Xwings (besides the OT era) that can be enjoyed by a variety of fans, especially those who have a variety of opinions on the ST era.

Being NR era doesn't have to mean just Xwings vs Ties.

You could have Xwings vs Pirates, Hutt forces, maybe even the Grysk. Thrawn could even show up.

Of course by expanding the NR era, it would greatly enrich the ST era by giving it more backstory. Seeing the NR at work (maybe some politics) and its military (Starhawks, new T-70's Xwings alongside older T-65's), possibly seeing Hosnian Prime, etc. A well done Rogue Squadron movie (and potential expanded material, i.e sequel, books/comics, animated series?) would be a great addition to the NR era while also giving us a better vision of what the Resistance is fighting for.

Also the NR era has one huge popular icon, and alive Luke Skywalker, the founder of Rogue Squadron (during the OT era). While he is not an active member of Rogue Squadron during the NR era since he is off working on the Jedi path, he (with his T-65) could show up in a role to help out if needed. The Mandalorian showed that Disney is willing to bring back a young Luke, so maybe he will show up again someday in live action.......

I don't think I've ever seen a fan of film (of any franchise, genre, whatever) celebrate the idea of autonomy being stripped filmmakers quite so much as you do.

Nothing better than when movies feel like they're coming off of an assembly line, am I right!?!

@Oissan, you've earned a few edits for making it personal, tone it down.

Many of Hollywood's greatest films (i.e., the golden era) were assembly line studio products. The fallacy in the auteur theory is the idea that only one person makes a film. Authorship makes sense when we talk about books, but not so with most movies.

This conversation is often too binary though -- just because a writer-director is given some parameters for the world, it doesn't follow that the product must be totally generic. It really depends on what those parameters are.

And even auteurs -- authors -- stay true to generic parameters they like.
