Saga The Definitive Thread to Rank All Star Wars Films (in terms of Your Favorite), TPM to TROS

This is pretty much where I am except I probably prefer ROTJ to TPM for purely subjective reasons. I also unabashedly enjoy ANH.

 

I posted in here before but I re-watched all the films recently and my opinion has changed a bit. Last ranking I did was after not having seen the movies for a few years.

So my new updated ranking:

thats easy.
Revenge of the Sith is one of the best films ive ever had the pleasure of watching. it is so layered and with such depth, far superior to any star wars movie ever made.
the emotional impact also far superior to the rest. you can comb that movie and find symbolisms and emotional references everywhere. some are well hidden and some are obvious.

 

Based on how often I'd be willing to revisit each film rather than on their merits as individual movies.

Is there any place to rank the trilogies as a whole? For me, it’s:

1. OT
2. ST
3. PT

 

This would be an interesting idea, especially since each trilogy (at least ostensibly) works as a three act story.

 

This would be my ranking. The ST has its faults, undoubtedly. But the fact that the acting, directing and dialogue make it SO much more watchable than the PT

It's not a ranking thread per se, but people tend to rank stuff in favorites threads anyway

 

The Greats:
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Rogue One
3. A New Hope
4. Return of the Jedi

The Okay:
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Solo
7. The Force Awakens
8. Phantom Menace

The mediocre:
9. The Last Jedi
10. Rise of Skywalker
11. Attack of the Clones

In spite of their faults, I do enjoy watching the last three ones, too.

I do hope that Andor will give even more depth to R1. I've seen the OT something like 20 times, the PT something like 10 times, and the ST and the anthology movies only a handful of times. It's possible that the ST movies will improve for me with repeated viewings...

 

Watched all 11 films over the last two weeks (great having two young sons watching them for the first time!). My rankings have changed.

The absolute best and will never change:
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Rogue One
3. A New Hope

Fantastic, but fall short in some areas:
4. The Force Awakens
5. The Last Jedi
6. Solo
7. The Return Of The Jedi
8. The Rise Of Skywalker

Great films with some good ideas, plot points and characters, but the toughest watch of all the movies for me:
9. The Revenge Of The Sith
10. The Phantom Menace
11. Attack Of The Clones

The prequels would be ranked a lot higher (especially ROTS) if the clunky dialogue, over use of CGI, Jar Jar Binks, and worst of all the poor acting and lack of chemistry between HC and NP and the ridiculous midi-chlorians and the immaculate conception idea. There is a LOT of good in these movies.....LOVED Obi Wan all the way through, Darth Maul, the pod race, General Grievous, and great world building.

 

I don’t want to consider either the Sequels or the other films created under the Disney direction of Lucasfilm, so my ranking will include only the 6 original films created by George Lucas. My ranking will have a descending order, and it will go from the movie I like the most to the one I like the least.

I think the Prequel Trilogy and the Original Trilogy are on the same level, I don’t like one more than the other. But, individually, I like the Prequel Trilogy films more than the Original Trilogy ones, mainly because the Original Trilogy films have aged rather badly in my opinion. Besides, I disagree with many of the criticisms of the Prequels.

Been a couple years so I guess I'll update my rankings. At this point I'm basing my rankings more on which movies I'd rather go back and watch now than on pure critical merit.

1. TESB (The GOAT)
2. ANH (Such a great intro into the galaxy far, far away, if only the SE changes could be erased)
3. Solo (Fun, captures the old charm of the OT better than any other movies since)
4. RO (Visually impressive, good action. Just a solid action movie overall)
5. ROTJ (Flawed but still charming, has some of the best scenes in the saga)
6. AOTC (Decent mystery, fun action sequences, cool planets. Romance sucks. Honestly, the prequels could change order depending on mood.)
7. TPM (Lots of nice eye-candy between the duel, the podrace, the set pieces, let down by the most wooden acting in the saga)
8. ROTS (Fun opening sequence, ties up the saga, the emotional drama falls flat at times)
9. TFA (One of the funniest in the saga, fairly enjoyable as a one-off action movie, disappointing as a follow up to the saga)
10. TLJ (Some amazing cinematography. Not a fan of how Luke was handled at all)
11. TROS (zzzz...)
12. TCW (Zero interest in rewatching this series of episodes awkwardly stapled into a feature length movie)
