I place of the Alphabet/Aurebesh debate, I offer an alternative solution: Scrambled Squadron.

Well, by that point the Poe Dameron comic had already shown U-wings at Jakku in its flashback issue that showed Terex's backstory ;)

They were also prominently featured in the Battlefront II story mode. I think that's what you fly around in after you defect to the New Republic.

Post-defection the characters are still flying the Corvus.

U-wings landing on Endor was one of the best things about BFII. I wouldn't mind them SEing a couple into Echo Base tbqh.

Scrambled Squadron would go very nicely with Dinner Squadron. :p

Huh, I forgot about that. I guess I gotta re-read those issues. Regardless, the more U-wings, the better. It really speaks to the brilliance of the design that it looks like it’s been there since 1977. Love it!

Really, though, they might not be all that far away from the hallowed halls of canon. We saw an E-Wing in the Poe Dameron comic (though it went unnamed) and the H-Wing showed up in a recent RPG book, which isn't canon but... close, I guess? So those two, at least, are kind of hanging around the outskirts of canon even now. No reason K-Wings couldn't be too far behind, right?

Sounds interesting. Freed did a great job with the Rogue One novelization.

English could be to the GFFA what Latin/Sanskrit are to us right now.

Only just found this - nice news.

I'd agree the title is a bit odd, but I can live with it - good to see another book from Freed.

Has a release date been given yet?

I like what little of Freed's work I've been exposed to, and the premise sounds interesting. I haven't bothered reading much new-canon stuff (though that's mostly part of a consistent but gradual trend towards reading less SW stuff since '03/'04), but I'll probably give this one a shot.

I actually sorta like the title, though I'm not sure it's a great call from a marketing perspective since my initial thought upon seeing the thread title was "Why is Freed writing a learn-the-alphabet book with spaceships?"

As for the whole Alphabet/Aurebesh thing, the DVD release's replacement of all English text onscreen with Aurebesh was fairly silly from the start, since the existence of X-wings etc. meant there must be some letter called X that's X-shaped. I was reasonably happy with the Legends explanation though, where Aurebesh was the prole character-set, Greek alphabet was Tionese (explaining Delta fighters, Delta squad, Lambda shuttles, etc.), and the Latin alphabet was High Galactic. I can accept Aurebesh as a mongrel alphabet for commoners, probably influenced by Hutt script or something similarly dreadful polluting proper human languages.

Speaking for myself, I understand the whole Aurebesh, English alphabet, “high galactic”, etc. debate. It’s not a matter of what makes sense in universe or not. I just simply think “Alphabet Squadron” sounds silly.

While it's eye-catching, it's not going to win over a lot of new readers. I got started on the EU by picking up Rogue Squadron at a used bookstore. I don't think I would have picked up something called Alphabet Squadron. And while I sometimes read SW books on the bus, I can't see myself doing it for this one. It's not that it's bad, it's eye-catchingly bad. Someone sees you reading Krytos Trap or Hand of Thrawn and they don't know what a Krytos or a Thrawn is, just that you're reading one of those Star Wars books. But Alphabet Squadron just looks weird.

I'm sure it will be a fantastic book. Freed is absolutely one of the best new authors, and I'd read Twilight Company again (that poor book has fallen by the wayside over the years). So I wish his book would have a better title, since he deserves more people reading his stuff.

I'm pretty excited for this! The title really doesn't bother me, but I see how it could for some others. Regardless of that, I'm sure Freed will knock it out of the park.

Man forget letters! I wanna know what Imperials they're bagging! Imperial Ruling Council or a new Grand Admiral sounds like a great idea. I also hope these are a group of aliens. Makes the Imperial Human thing a lot more interesting.
