I could perhaps accept this from a low-information voter. But we’re talking about this guy’s job. He knew better than this, with 100% certainty. Nevertheless, he gave Trump his support to make himself popular.

There’s nothing defensible here. It’s craven, selfish, short-sighted and hypocritical. The guy is literally as bad as Lindsey Graham. I hope he never influences anything at all.

    I like Liz Bruenig. :(

Honestly, I see O'Rourke as a great VP pick--not necessarily a good presidential candidate though.

And I'm pretty sure that tweet by McElrath wins the award for so-bad-it's-good tweet of the year. [face_plain]

I'm frightened about this primary season. The Trump referendum will overwhelm all other considerations over what sort of politician would make the best candidate. All we know for sure is that we're all going to be miserable. The last thing we need is another mother****er born in the 1940s leading the country. Three of the five living US presidents were born in 1946. We've had enough of that putrid vintage.

If O’Rourke were to somehow get elected, it would be the first time a President has been younger than I am. Only one President— Obama—has been younger than my parents, so I found the concept interesting.

The primary season is going to suck, especially if the Democratic battle ends up being more of the same “establishment vs progressive” nonsense with so much “b...bu...but...” on the establishment side. I hope the rumor I heard about 31 people filing to run as Democrats is wrong. The GOP should not have put up 16 people in 2016.

If anyone primaries Trump, I’m voting in the GOP primary anyway.

That criticism of O'Rourke doesn't even mention the other online criticisms of him: namely that while he's centrist, he's also a poltical novice to some fairly experienced women (who are more progressive than him in any case). So he's both too much Bernie (white guy vs. better qualified women) and not enough Bernie (he's way more centrist than people think)!

He's Barack Obama, except Obama won a statewide election.

There's no one the idiot Dems have that can win, anyway, so I say run a real progressive and run up the score on the popular vote just to show how crappy the Electoral College really is.

The Democrats can't keep putting in Macron/Clinton type neolibs and expect people like me to come out in support. It's just not going to happen.

I wouldn't mind seeing O'Rourke, Stacey Abrams or Andrew Gillum in the primaries or as a VP on the ticket. Yes they lost their respective state elections but they are fresh intelligent voices that put up very competitive fights against deep red state establishments. Seems to me that in this electoral college system we might want that kind of experience

Nominate a progressive candidate, but make sure it's someone who can talk like a normal American and can defend his agenda as one. Substance will win over the more progressive voters, while style will win over independents.

True, but since the establishment’s calculus seems to be that your “type” of progressive is concentrated in solid blue states, it’s okay to lose your vote in favor of chasing rural white Obama Democrats who subsequently backed Trump.

That type of thinking is wrong from the ground up, IMHO, and will continue to lose elections for the Democrats going forward.

So just to weigh in... I think this year is the year of the woman and I absolutely think the Democratic ticket should be two women. Current options are Gillibrand, Harris, and Warren. Warren was my queen at one point in time (although I don't love her as much as I once did) so I will most likely be supporting her, but to be completely honest I am completely fine with any of these three taking the presidency with the right platform. I am a little less positive on Harris than others here -- corruption in politics is my #1 issue, and questionable prosecution decisions as California AG don't sit well with me.

I also think Stacy Abrams would be a damn good choice for VP no matter who the main candidate is. Tammy Baldwin wouldn't be a bad choice, either.

Stop with the stupidpol nonsense. The ticket doesn't need to be two women. The ticket needs to be two leftists. It's like you've learned nothing from 2016. Stop blindly pushing female candidates from some misguided sense of identity politics.

I'd be fine with two women depending on who they are and not Hillary.

    Thank you.
I'm sorry @Lord Vivec but you seem to think that we live in a country where people are rational. There's a reason the term "if it bleeds it leads" came into the purview of media & politics. Two women running and winning on the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment's ratification is one hell of a story and we both know Americans love one hell of a story. Also, I had no lesson to learn - I voted for Sanders.

Also, apparently Sanders said something less than desirable and so therefore no actual leftist is going to win the Dem primary anyway. Warren is an early 20th Century progressive at best.

I voted for Sanders, I voted for Obama in the primary against Clinton, so I don’t have a lesson to learn either. And personally I find the idea that “you need to vote for this woman because she’s a woman” anti-feminist, not feminist.

But...two women and two leftists on the ticket are not contradictory goals. It’s not as if there are no women leftists.

And yes, if a male candidate is better, I’ll support the male candidate—see also: Obama 2008 and Sanders 2016.

That does not mean I can’t support the idea of a good female candidate on the ticket.

...I’m to the right of Vivec and a few others here and maybe there are no women who align with him politically. I don’t really know.

But there are plenty of women to the left of Hillary Clinton.
