I mean it as the highest possible praise for Rogue One that it is the only film apart from my beloved childhood trilogy I regard as canon.

Even among those I rank it equal to my favourite "A New Hope" as a film expounding the Imperial command and the fascinating Death Star. Mendelssohn is quite equal to Cushing as an urbane and civilised but ruthless man.

Yeah, this is how I feel also... I appreciate the effort that they have gone to with all the new films but the only one that holds a candle to the OT to me is Rogue One. I can appreciate (parts of) the PT and like (most of) the ST but when I try and watch them all as one big saga it falls down hard... If I just watch the 4 we like I have the backstory of Obi Wan fighting Vader beside a volcano, no continuity issues (just the backstory as told in the OT as reference) and a happy ending for the gang at the end of Jedi. I am hoping The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series stay true to this era and then I will have more to watch

The only part that is next to impossible to get around is the special edition with HC at the end of Jedi. It forces the PT on you when if it were just the original Anakin it could be dismissed [face_shame_on_you]

I must thank the people who have taken a kind interest in my opinion.

If I may be allowed to digress slightly, there is a way around the lamentable editing out of Sebastian Shaw (also removing the other unpleasant meddlings) though not an especially practical one -- I have the original trilogy on VHS. They are still quite cheap but great care must be taken to avoid the 1997 VHS set.

I have heard of a restoration of the theatrical cut by a team lead by a Czech gentlemen, the "Despecialised Edition", but where you find it I do not know.

I go one step further... I just turn it off before HC arrives - everytime.

Beyond IMHO being by far the best of the post OT films to me it feels like the only one thats really even interested in carrying on their style directly, Edwards being a true fan I think showing though there.

I do like as well that it brings a bit of Blade Runner influence into Starwars as well, to me it kind of felt like Lucas and Ridley Scott were almost spitballing idead between them back in the day. I suspect both were influenced by films like Solaris in the used/industrial sci fi setting but I think you see a back and forth between A New Hope, to Alien to Empire and then Blade Runner so seeing the latter coming back to SW is a nice touch.

Watched Rogue One again after a year, I watched 20 odd times the first year it was out. Not only does it stand up it is maturing very well as a film. It seems
To me a plot driven film rather than a character driven one. As the meme said it was the real suicide squad- don’t know if any other film that slaughters it’s principle cast in the same way.

Rogue One was on the television on May the Fourth and it was glorious. Admiral Raddus should be in all homes, saying "May the Force be with you" on Star Wars day.

R1 is definitely my favorite among all the films released since ROTJ. It's hard to top TESB. It's the best of the Disney-sponsored SW films. TFA and the prequels are all right, but TLJ is worthless and Solo is forgettable.

It’s easily the best of the Disney era, and the only film since ROTS I can comfortably accept as canon. I hope we get an episode in the Cassian Andor series where he and Raddus are in a ship playing cat and mouse with a Star Destroyer in a nebula and it’s like an old submarine movie.

To me now, it just feels like Episode 4-A with ANH being Episode 4-B.

It bolts on so seamlessly. I’ve said it a few times so I apologise, but I was really surprised just how Star Wars it is, perhaps even more so than its source movie which is nuts.

The tragic conclusion gives some welcome genuine peril and sacrifice. I love it.

This was just on and now it's back on back to back on TBS. And damn does this look good on my new 65" HD tv.

Has anyone ever edited Rogue One together with the 1977 Star Wars, taking out Rogue One's credits and Star Wars's crawl, thus making them into one giant movie?

There are some on YouTube that cover the RO ending and ANH beginning.

As much as I love both movies, I don’t think I could watch them as one long film without an intermission.

The intermission is the Star Destroyer going over the screen. That takes at least 15 minutes.

Intermission for me is either the pause button or sometimes a nap, because I fell asleep.

The problem with that Rogue One / A New Hope edit is the change to Vader's voice. You have to imagine that he must have had a cold, and took some lozenges before boarding the Tantive IV

I mean, I know James Earl Jones is older now, but his Vader voice sounded terrific to me.

He did, but I thought he sounded slightly wheezier* in Rogue One, which is understandable given his age.
