This is a tough question. There have been quite a few good characters since Disney took over. I know I'm going to leave someone off who should be in the top 3.
1) Chirrut Imwe. Donnie Yen really breathed a lot of life into Chirrut, and made him so much more than just a background player.
2) Lando Calrissian. Donald Glover was phenomenal in this role. A few times in Solo, I closed my eyes and couuld have sworn it was Billy Dee Williams again.
3) K-2SO. Alan Tudyk is one of my favorite actors, so it made it so much easier to really love K-2. Such great comedic timing for a reprogrammed robot.

If we're just talking about the Sequel Trilogy, my favorites would be Rey, Poe, and maybe Maz or Holdo.

Disney-era films overall? Well, that would be Jyn, Cassian, and Chirrut.

Rogue One has so many great characters, it’s amazing how well that film was cast and made.

 

Kylo Ren - A layered baddie. Adam Driver kills it.
Orson Krennic - A delicious villain, an underdog on the Imperial totem. He's the lowest rank main antagonist we've probably had yet in a Star Wars film. He's subservient to Grand Moff Tarkin, Darth Vader, and of course the Emperor.
Enfys Nest - We haven't seen much of her yet, but she's great so far. Serious, yet charming. A leader in tough times.

 

Cassian Andor getting his own series could change my list considerably. Can't wait to see!

Flat characters or round?

SW in general shows how enjoyable flat, undeveloped characters can be when sufficiently entertaining. Flat isn't always bad, in other words.

Lots of great flat characters in Disney SW. The real question, for me, is who will the great round characters be? I'm not sure I see a single one yet, and part of this has to do with the ensemble approach SW favors, which makes it very difficult to add sufficient dept or believable arcs. I emphasize believable arc because just to give a character an arc isn't sufficient for depth; the depth must be believable, organic depth, not improbable or merely possible.

If Kylo ever receives a back story, he's a strong candidate for a great round character. We need more believable motive though. He works now as a kind of great flat portrayal of inner conflict, but that inner conflict is too vague, so vague it's basically just allegory.

Rey also is a possible candidate, but again we need backstory and motive. She's a flat outsider type right now, which is all well and good, but her backstory is also too vague for her to be a great round character.

Rogue One offers a couple of candidates for strong round characters with Jyn and Cassian; I'd have to rewatch it to take a strong position on them, but at least I can say I understand their basic motivations. Their arcs could probably be strengthened, but overall they seem to be the most developed of the Disney era. Qi'ra of Solo also has some potential; I can see some inner conflict in her that's based on understandable circumstances -- she's a good person who has felt forced to compromise themselves in a corrupt world.

So yeah, in terms of evaluating this in terms of roundness, I think I can rate my favorites as:

-Loved a lot of the characters in Solo.
-Thought all the characters in Rogue One were boring and underdeveloped. I know it only had a short period of time, but I felt attached to none of them and didn't care that they all were gone by the end.

 

Probably Chirrut Imwe, K-2SO, and Jyn Erso.

 

Great. But I think this is the list your favorite characters thread, not your least favorite.
