Wait, Jabba used to be a humanoid? I was looking around Wookieepedia and couldn't find anything on that...

The Marvel Comics version was never how Jabba was supposed to look. The artists only had the script, and took a random cantina creature to assign to his likeness.

As for whether Jabba was supposed to be human originally, that is subject to much debate. According to Lucas, no. But all other evidence gathered pertaining to shooting the scene suggests "yes".

It was interesting how Mulholland played a very classical American gangster in space. The puppet Jabba is almost too ridiculous to be taken as a direct threat, yet is still effectively real and disgusting.

Re-reading the Comic Book adaptation of ANH a few years ago (for the first time in many years) I was surprised both that the cut scene was in it and the design they used. The Jabba we got is so iconic it's hard not to go w/him, but I've always been on the fence w/how alien-centric ROTJ is. On the one hand, yeah, it's a galaxy of diverse beings and they've always given a nice flavor to the SW galaxy. The creature cantina in ANH for instance. But in ROTJ they (aliens) really came to the forefront in sometimes off-putting ways IMO (Ewoks, Admiral Akbar). The idea of a sleazy humanoid Jabba has its appeal too.

    ROTJ Jabba is Jabba.

He's got a memorable, iconic design and voice, like other famous creatures from 1980's films like the Gremlins, Falcor from Neverending Story, and even E.T. himself.

I think it's cool that we got the Jabba scene on re-releases of A New Hope, but it's also kind of neat that originally Jabba was just a looming threat in the background. He was Han's 'endgame.' RotJ's design is perfect and a hugely satisfying to Han's arc from the past two films.

ROTJ Jabba looks the best. He's a molester, and so I personally don't like him.

The deleted scene being in it makes sense, since the adaptation was first being worked on by around December of 1976, and was taken from the shooting script. All comic adaptations that are done before the release of a film, have to have enough lead time to be made. That's why the 1997 SE version of ANH and even "Transformers: The Movie", which had a new adaptation made, were both based off the final film. Hence all the dialogue changes, as well as the alterations to the story. i.e., Jabba and Boba in ANH.
