Have you ever dreamed of managing a baseball team where you could have Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron back-to-back in your lineup? Or maybe you want Ernie Banks turning two, while playing two alongside Mike Schmidt? Maybe you dream of a battery with Pedro Martinez and Chris Hoiles, or an outfield roamed by Mickey Mantle and Stan Musial? Have you dreamed of a game seven, with Walter Johnson facing Alex Rodriguez, with the game on the line? Maybe you want to reunite post season legends like Joe Carter and Orel Hershiser, or imagine post game press conferences with Ty Cobb and Curt Schilling? Perhaps what you really hunger for is Phil Neikro taking the mound and being relieved by John Wetteland? Or, Maybe you just want to see how good Bob Gibson can be ...

If any of those describe you ... good news: this is the game for you.

In this, the 9th version of a Sports Draft Facilitated by Simulations at WhatIf Sports ... you are invited to try to build the greatest baseball team in history.

    Good luck beating this, though:

Through two baseball drafts, we've learned this: Simulated Baseball is a simple sport. Eight-to-twelve GMs draft 200-300+ players, tom makes a lot of trades, bullpen use is odd and sporadic, and in the end, Pointy Wins.

That's because not only was the first baseball draft was won by @Point Given ... so was the second As a result, in addition to eternal bragging rights, he get automatic entry into this draft, and the first overall pick. If this is your first time, you might find it helpful to review the other sports draft:

The First NBA Draft, won by @EmpireForever (Able to draft any player any time)
The Second NBA Draft, won by @tom (Limited to only players from the 2012-13 NBA Season)
The Third NBA Draft, won by @tom (Back to any player, any time)
The Fourth NBA Draft, won by @PRENNTACULAR (auction style Franchise Acquisition)
The Fifth NBA Draft, won by @Point Given (all GMs must draft from the same franchise every round)
The First College Football Draft, won by @LloydChristmas (any player from the modern era)
The First Baseball Draft, won by @Point Given (All GMS must draft from the same franchise every round)
The Second Baseball Draft, won by @Point Given (All GMS must draft from the same franchise every round)

This draft has some new features ... the biggest of which is the Dynasty Component. Here's how it's going to work:

    The Participants:

    1) The Commish - That's me. I'm going to keep the draft going by moving along the selection process (see below), posting games, posting results, and generally keeping the game moving forward.
    2) The GMs - that's you. The twelve of you. You'll assemble your team, put together lineups, and respond to the ebbs and flows in your attempts to win. You start this game with three types of assets: 25 draft picks, $50 in allocation money, and Three "Keeper" slots. All assets are tradeable

    The Phases of the Game:

    1) The Draft

With the exception of Pointy - who gets the first pick in the odd-numbered rounds and the last pick in even-numbered rounds, the order of picks will be randomized. The draft will be done in snake order, so it will reverse every round. There will be a total of 25 rounds of drafting.

When selecting a player, please kindly use this format:

    Name - Position (Franchise, Year)

Please Note: Unlike previous baseball drafts, no limitation on a franchise per round – a true free-for-all, draft who you want when you want them situation. And, once a player is gone - he's off the board for good. There will only be one Roger Clemens. There will only be one Rogers Hornsby. There will only be one Alex Rodriguez. There will only be up to one Bartolo Colon.

(as an homage to the Jedi and Starfighter drafts, and their Anakin/Vader dynamic, we will allow two Babe Ruths - One Pitcher, One Outfielder. No other exceptions)

    Roster Construction Rules:

You must have a minimum of 25 players and can have a maximum of 40 players. 25 players will be considered your "active" roster.
    Your active roster must contain:

    (1) Catcher, (1) First Baseman, (1) Second Baseman, (1) Third Baseman, (1) Shortstop, (3) Outfielders, (4) Starting Pitchers, (1) Relief Pitcher, (4) Utility Position Players, (1) Utility Pitcher, and the remainder (7) slots can be filled by any player.

    2) The Signing Period

During the draft, if you traded away multiple picks and end up with a roster of fewer than 25 total players or fewer players that are required for each mandatory slot or if you wish to have players on your inactive roster. To sign a player, you will use your allocation money. The rates are as follows:

To sign a player without dropping another player: $10
To sign a player and drop a player: $5

During this period, we will use a "wavier wire" type system, where the top priority is given to those teams who pick higher in even rounds.

    3) The Assignment of Players Period

In the unlikely event that you cannot fill your roster / mandatory slots via draft, trade, or signing, the Commissioner will assign you players to fill out your roster. These players will be on about the level of Joel Skinner, Paul Assenmacher, and Brook Jacoby.

    4) Spring Training

Any club/GM who desires can have their team participate in up to eight Spring Training Games against an historical team and/or last year's versions of USA Network All-Stars and Performance Enhancers.

At the end of Spring Training, the Franchise and Year of the players on your roster or locked. To change either of those will cost you Allocation Money - $3 per change.

    5) The Regular Season

Each team will play every other team twelve times - two sets of two each three game series, one at home and one away. When a set of series comes up, each GM should post their rotation for the series. Then, each GM should post their line-up and batting order for each game of the series. Please note:

    • The Designated Hitter is not in use, pitcher always bats ninth.
    • Your starting pitcher must have at least three days off in between starts
    • There will be some scheduled "travel days" (Posted) to allow you to modify your rotation slightly.
Once all line-ups are posted or 24 hours has passed, the games will be simulated at www.whatifsports.com. The Commish will provide the results and box scores, as well as any exciting/amusing acts from the simulation via a recap. You cannot change your line-up mid-series.

We will stop along the way and play an All-Star Game, too. And a home run derby. And a few other events.

In between series, you can add/drop between your active and in-active rosters (if you have more than 25 players, either via trading for multiple assets or using Allocation Money to sign free agents). In between select series, you will be able to conduct signings of free agents and trades with other GMs. The specific times in the season where this are allowed will be determined later and EDITED INTO THIS POST RIGHT HERE.

    6) The Playoffs

The top four teams will advance to the playoffs. The #1 team will play the #4 team and #2 will play #3. Both series will be in a 2-3-2 format. The winners will advance to the championship, which is also in a 2-3-2 format. There will be travel days after game 2 and after game 5 in all series.

In the event of a tie for position, head-to-head win/loss will be used as a tiebreaker. If the teams remained tied:

    • If all teams involved in the tie would qualify for the playoffs and only seeding is in question, the commish shall do a random draw to determine seeding
    • If one (or more) teams involved in the draw would not qualify for the playoffs, the commish shall institute as many one-game playoff games as needed to break the tie (i.e. if there are two teams tied, we need one game. if there are three teams, we need two games, with a head-to-head ranking or random draw to select which team gets a "bye", and so on ...).
    7) The Championship Parade

The winner of the championship game will be given a parade in his honor, with the mayor blocking off much of downtown. Or, well, Game winner VIPship and colors for a week.

    8) The Carryover to NEXT Season

That's right. We're playing for keeps!

Everyone playing in this draft and continuing to the next season gets three keepers. Any three players on your team you want to bring through and make sure you have them next season – they are yours to take. But, you can keep more … if you want to, that is.

Keeping a fourth player will cost you your first-round draft pick in the next draft. Keeping a fifth player will cost you your second- and third-round picks. Want a sixth? You’ll forfeit your picks in rounds 4-6. A seventh? Pony up all five picks from round seven thru eleven. Picks from round 12-17 can net you an eighth, and rounds 18-25 can net you a ninth.

So, if desired, you could keep an entire starting team – all eight position players and one pitcher (or any combination of nine players – four starters, a closer, your outfield, and your catcher, for instance).

You can also keep fewer carryover players. If you want to keep only two, you’ll net an additional pick at the end of the third round in the next draft. Only want to keep one? You’ll net additional picks at the end of the second and third round, and if you don’t want to keep any, you get additional picks at the end of each of the first three rounds.

Keepers is also a tradeable asset. You can trade another team your right to carry a player (or two or three) as part of a trade. So are future draft picks. You can go to the trade deadline and offer up your first round pick next year to get that ace pitcher at the deadline! (Of course, if you trade away a future pick, you can’t use it to keep additional players … so plan your strategy wisely. Once your keeper train derails, you can’t get it back on the tracks).

You also carryover any unused Allocation Money to next season.

Year-to-year, the league will remain at 12 teams.

Teams 1-4 (the playoff teams) automatically qualify to compete in the next season and draft 1-4, with the World Series Champion picking first.

Teams 5-8 in the final standings qualify, but take a slight hit. They will draft after any expansion teams.

Teams 9-12 face potential relegation. They must wait 48 hours after the new season begins to sign up, allowing for up to four newcomers to possibly take their spot (but, still need to post their keepers in this thread to have them ready for next season).

But, once we are full, we draft a new!

But, before we get to any of that, we need to finish the preliminary phase: Sign-ups!

Once We have our GMs set, we will being. To sign-up, just copy the list and add your name.

And with the Franchise of the round rule gone, if you want to just draft your favourite players, you can. No more figuring out who the fifth best Mariner is, or third best Ranger, or least objectionable Cardinal. You can - and this is to several people reading - just play for fun. To see the odd moments when your favourite players do something inexplicable against all time greats. Get a laugh as Brian McCann homers off of Cy Young. Pump your fist in the air as Babe Ruth gets struck out by Tom Candiotti. Laugh as you lose a game 21-1, but your pitcher hit five constructive batters. And who knows, you might discover the next Chris Hoiles.

Look at Major League Baseball ... You think every team there really understands all the rules and it's playing to win? The game might look long and complicated, but it's pretty simple

Somehow, yes. One year ago, and the first of three re-orgs I'd have, meaning that my planned quarterly trips to NYC went out the window as soon as they started.

Thank goodness we're back to picking any player from any team; the sticking to the same franchise in a round was too inhibiting. Honestly, though, I'm only really in it for the draft process*, which is the best part as I see it.
