Who knows I've been facepalming about it ever since it was announced at the SOTU.

103. Amazing run. So many years he was on the Deadpool. And he outlasted all of them.

 

Knew it had to be coming eventually. Still a sad day. One of the last Golden Age icons.

 

Rest In Peace Mr. Douglas.

I first saw Kirk Douglas in The Final Countdown, not knowing what a huge star he was. It was not until after Romancing The Stone starring Michael Douglas I became interested. Then came Draw! Then The Villain.

 

He made it onto the UK's DeathList 18 times...

I think his best performance might have been as an amoral, but charismatic Hollywood producer in The Bad & the Beautiful. Or maybe as a slick gangster in Out of the Past. But I just realized I still haven't seen Ace in the Hole . . . But, yes, he elevated everything he was in.

He must be the last of that era still alive? You kind of grow up with these stars and they become part of your own little world of pop culture if you like, I’ve been watching films starring Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin etc for all my life and I can’t think of anyone from that era still around. Obviously Spartacus is the one that gets all the praise, but Id pick out films like Heroes of Telemark, The List of Adrian Messenger, Gunfight at the OK Corral and 20000 leagues under the Sea as being my favourites from him too.

I suppose we move on the generation beneath him now, the Al Pacinos, Jack Nicholson’s and (god forbid) Harrison Fords of this world.
