Which of the Star Wars Saga scores are your favorites?

The Empire Strikes Back. It's operatic, for the most operatic episode.

One thing to try is this. Play "The Rebel Fleed / End Credits" track, and try to imagine it is the end of a stage opera. As each motif is played, imagine the character whose motif it is walking back out onto the stage for the end-of-performance cast gathering, each waving to the audience until they are all there. Yoda, Vader, Leia etc

That's how it makes me feel, as if it is a grand opera.

 

Yes ESB is perfect to me. The ending left me so sad as a kid. Those kind of movies just didn't have sad endings back then.

 

TESB, ANH and ROTS stand out for me.

 

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
Every track on there is some of William's best.
I can almost assume he had fun making that one.
Close runner ups are tracks.
Jawa sancrawler
And
Rebel Fleet/End credits because of the former SW galaxies online game.

 

Probably Episode V’s soundtrack.
I love all the music on Bespin. Plus it has “The Asteroid Field”, Imperial March, “Yoda And The Force”...

All the soundtracks on Episodes 1-6 are great. Episode 7’s soundtrack is really good as well.

I can’t say I find myself listening to much from Episode 8 & 9. “The Battle of Crait” from TLJ does a great job using the Falcon’s theme though.

 

Revenge of the Sith. Padme's Ruminations, I'm so Sorry, Anakin's betrayal, need I say more?

 

It's hard to choose between the first 6 films but ROTS as a whole is just beautiful.

 

Very difficult choice between The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace, John Williams don't be indicated to Academy Awards for a last one was a absurd!

It’s really hard to choose one, but I really think The Empire Strikes Back just takes the cake. It incorporates some of my favorite themes from A New Hope (Binary Sunset, Princess Leia’s Theme, The Throne Room, etc.) and introduces so many iconic new ones — The Imperial March, Han Solo and the Princess, Yoda’s Theme, etc. (Not to mention, The Rebel Fleet/End Title might be my favorite piece of finale music out of all nine films in the saga.)

I think my top three (out of all the films) would probably be The Empire Strikes Back, A New Hope and MAYBE Revenge of the Sith? It’s so hard to choose, though, they’re all so brilliant.

 

Ooh, choosing between the OT is insanely hard for me...I suppose, yeah, I'll have to go for Empire, with ANH running up for iconic themes. ROTJ definitely has some good tricks too, and in this case, John William's theme for the ending scene in the SE definitely beats Yub Nub I have to say!

PT, I think I'll choose TPM, ROTS comes up behind it. ST, TFA also wins, with the other two mostly borrowing the best leitmotifs from that really.

 

I remember when the Phantom Menace premiered...Duel of Fates was on the top ten on TRL (Total Request Live) on MTV. Super cool experience.

 

ESB , but ROTJ is not far behind

 

RotJ reprises all the great themes from ANH and ESB, plus it has the Into The Trap theme, which doesn't get nearly enough love.

 

This has always been my take.

 

TPM is definitely my favorite. Williams use of leitmotif throughout the saga is the thing I love most about his music and Episode I features the most ambitious and consistently brilliant use of leitmotif then any other film in the saga. The way he re-works the imperial march into Anakin's theme and sneaks Palpatine's theme into the victory celebration is just brilliant and the new material is great as well (Duel of the Fates, Qui-Gon's theme, etc.).

ESB is a close second. As others have said, it takes the already brilliant score from the first film and builds on it beautifully.

It's hard to pick a third favorite. I really love the ROTJ score but its a little less cohesive then some of the others. Same goes for ROTS. I think I'll have to go for ANH, because it was the first and everything else builds on it. Also the binary sunset is one of the greatest fusions of music and visuals in the history of film.

 

I just really like the The Phantom Menace soundtrack. Just like the movie it just sounds really fun and epic. Droid March is definitely one of my farvorites and true match for the Imperial March, but Duel of Fates is great and pushes what kind of music can be in Star Wars, and the song in the lead up to the Podrace is just epic, the song when they go to Otoh Gunga is whimsical. One score that I really wished they'd use more was Qui-gonn's theme. You hear it when he first fights Darth Maul and a more melancholic version right after he dies. I think part of why I like it so much is just like the movie it has an adventurous kind of light hearted feel to it. The soundtrack just has a lot of memorable pieces in it and is kind of the basis for the rest of the Trilogy.

 

Qui-Gon's theme is underrated for sure.

 

My three favorites would be Revenge of the Sith, The Phantom Menace, and The Empire Strikes Back. I find the TPM score to be the most underrated. Duel of the Fates is usually the only track singled out there when the entire score has so many excellent moments -- the Naboo space battle, the Jedi Council meeting, the arrival on Coruscant, Qui-Gon's theme, Otoh Gunga, the Trade Federation theme, and of course, Anakin's theme.

Following those three would be Return of the Jedi and then either of ANH or AOTC. TFA would be the best in the sequel trilogy for having the most memorable new themes of the three. TLJ and TROS are easily the weakest score-wise.

 

I liked the scores in the order the movies were produced, but tbh i don't like any of the new scores (2014 and down)

 

While the Ewok theme gets WAY more attention. Hell, it gets more play time in the ROTJ end titles than all the other themes.

 

That has always annoyed me...

 

Empire when Han gets put on ice. Love it.
Phantom Menace...strong dislike for that quick trumpet they hammered to death during every battle scene. Patapappappappappapa! Patapappappappappapa! Patapappappappappapa! Worst. I bet the trumpeter who played that looked at the music sheets and was like, "Da heck? Ok...whatever."
