Oh the layers upon layers of absurdity there..... someone really should ask if QGM even watched Parasite, since it seems he's complaining about it, yet can't even manage to use the name of the film. Though watching Parasite would also involve reading, and I can't help but suspect that means he didn't see it. (seriously, someone who he can't ignore ask if he saw the winning movie)

Of course there's also that he complains that the technical and film making standpoint was better with 1917, and 1917 *did* win Oscars for visual effects, cinematography and sound mixing. So it was recognized for technical and film making standpoints.

And then there's also that 1917 *also* had a message, it didn't "just entertain". Aside from that 1917 packs a major emotional punch with the raw depiction of war so there's something warped with anyone that considers it 'just entertainment' and doesn't find some of it sobering, but it's almost impressive to have watched it and thought it had no messages. It's rather insulting to the film, really.

And I say all this as someone that did like 1917 more than Parasite (but wouldn't have given the Oscar to either of them)

There's also that the Oscars have been a joke in how things win well before this. This is the same organization that gave John Wayne an Oscar for True Grit

But conservative media touts the hardened libertarian as being 'the most prominent voice of reason on the Left'. [face_laugh]

Shocking that stories with things to say end up being more interesting than some mindless drivel.

I guess Mike proves the cliché that all anti-war movies inevitably end up being pro-war.

Or indeed this year's winner Nomadland.

Just a story about a community of people who live life out on the road.
I'm not sure it really has any particular "message" or whatever.

The Oscars should honour movies like that.

Nothing wrong with entertainment but the big money blockbuster stuff rarely ever wins the big prizes because they're usually not as well crafted in terms of movie-making.

Hard hitting stuff like Moonlight or 12 Years A Slave will win over MCU movies or Gravity or majority of similar movies.
Just because it made the most money and got the most viewers doesn't make it the best movie

Yes. Thought it was OK is all. Not a bad film but not Oscar-worthy either. Im not the only one that feels this way.

Not really - Its just an incredibly crafted, well-made film in every regard.

And thats fine - maybe it needs to be broken up into best "type" of films for Best Picture then. I dunno. Really, with the declining viewership and TV taking over, the Oscars are finding themsleves to be quite irrelevant anyways. Heck, Im old enough to remember when people(appreciable number) actually watched the Oscars and it actually got discussed the next day at work. It seemed to matter more. Entertainment now has so many venues per se. Times have changed.

Why is this in the "Cancel Culture" thread? Are you looking to "cancel" the Oscars because they don't choose the movies you like?

Come on it was pretty great, both in terms of message and in terms of realization.

Also, if we put aside the Birdman-style cinematic technique for a moment, frankly 1917 wasn't such a big deal.

I thought 1917 lost momentum and was kinda boring. I thought Parasite was wildly entertaining, one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. I haven't laughed that hard watching a new movie in many years. Respect!

    https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/matt-damon-retired-homophobic-slur-daughter-162535511.html

Matt Damon's daughter wrote a treatise as to why he should stop using the f-word for gay people, and he followed her advice. So, that's great. I think those who insist on continuing to slurs for gay or trans people should be canceled. Of course, Damon has a good mindset. During the Harvey Weinstein scandal, he said as a father of girls that he would certainly be concerned for their safety.

Man, Weinstein got some hard karma: Covid and prison. Lol.

My goodness. Im a huge film buff so the list is very extensive. But, some of my all time favorites? OK, I'll take the bait and the thrashing I'll probably get thereafter. :). These arent necessarily in order but here goes:
    1. Lord of the Rings trilogy
    2. Jaws
    3. Alien/Aliens
    4. Terminator 1/2
    5. The Matrix trilogy
    6. Back to the Future trilogy
    7. 2001 A Space Odyssey
    8. Disneys Enchanted - yep, and I dont care. I bawl my eyes out and love that movie :D
    9. The Godfather(at least 1&2)
    10. Kingdom of Heaven(directors cut only)
And like so many more. Plenty that are popular and obvious but a few guilty pleasures too. Im a big horror fan as well(well done horror, not torture porn) Look, I think I know where you might be going with this. Stop me if Im wrong, please. I bet you're going to say that some of my favorite films have messages in them or whatever you want to call it. Id agree that some certainly do. Im a huge fan of the original Planet of the Apes films and there is a message there for sure. 2001 has some deeper meanings implied. Like I said, too many to list. I guess my point was that recently it seems the Oscars are not picking the right films for Best Picture. Its really my opinion. Not sure what else to tell ya.....?

To everyone else that tried to pick my favorite films - hilarious. I havent even seen those on your lists, mostly and if I did they arent my favorite films and I dont own them on disc. But as expected, you guys didnt waste time picking all hardcore, pro-military films did ya? Or, whatever you consider "right wing" movies. So predictable, you are. So boring. Master and Commander was boring crap that I didnt even get through, BTW. Good try though, guys/gals. [face_laugh]

"the Oscars" aren't a person picking anything. Movies are being voted on by a large group of people. It's that democracy you claim to love.
