All right, everyone, the index is now up to date with five (5) awesome entries! As of today there are officially just three (3) days left in our sonnets challenge until the due date of June 12; I’ll be curious to see what else might come in in the next couple days! But as always entries are perfectly welcome after the deadline as well. And then we’ll get the next challenge for this thread ready to go! As always, feel free to ask if you have any questions. :)

OK, everybody, new challenge time! :D

OTP Challenge #35: The Language of Flowers

In the Victorian “language of flowers,” bouquets and arrangements of flowers could be used to communicate, with different meanings and symbolism attributed to different flowers and plants. Some flowers symbolized aspects of love, others aspects of friendship and platonic connection— and yet others run the whole gamut from mush to angst and then some. As a result, even a small nosegay could communicate a very specific message.

Below I’ve listed thirty-five (35) different flowers or plants, in alphabetical order, along with links to informational pages and their traditional meanings according to my copy of Language of Flowers (illustrated by Kate Greenaway; New York: Merrimac Publishing, ca. 1975). Here’s what to do:
    • Choose a “bouquet” of at least three (3) types of flowers/plants from the list. (More than one person may make the same choices.)
    • Write a story of at least 100 words featuring the OTP of your choice, and using the flowers/plants, symbolism, or both as prompts.
    • That’s pretty much it!
Other guidelines to keep in mind:
    • Stories are due in the usual eight (8) weeks, on Wednesday, August 21, by 11:59 pm (23:59) PST.
    • As always, ad hoc entries past the deadline are welcome too.
    • A few of the plants listed below have more than one meaning. In such cases, feel free to incorporate one or the other, or both, as you feel inspired.
    • If you know of other flower symbolisms, from Victorian culture or other cultures, that aren’t on this list, feel free to incorporate them too! But I still ask that you choose at least three (3) from the list below as your starting point, so that everyone starts from a common basis.
    • You are always welcome to search for further images or information on your flower or plant to inspire you.
    • When you post your stories, please specify in your story headers which flowers/plants you chose from the list, along with their meanings. (It would also be great if you could do the same when you post the link to this story in this thread.)
    • Just a reminder once again that we are not holding voting for this challenge. Instead, early next year, we'll hold a single big vote for all this thread's stories for this year!
    • TOS apply, of course!

    *squee!*

This is such an awesome idea for a challenge! I LOVE the Language of Flowers, and have even incorporated it in my writing before - both literally and figuratively. I am so excited to see what the muse comes up with this time, and to see what everyone else writes too! [face_love]

    Ooooh, yes . . . yes you do! [face_dancing] :*

My entry for OTP Challenge #35 is posted:

A Love Story Told in the Language of Flowers

It is a romance featuring the sweet couple of Neville Longbottom/Hannah Abbott from the Harry Potter fandom because some of the flowers mentioned in the challenge like "vervain" made my mind immediately jump to Harry Potter fandom territory.

The flowers and their meanings used in this story are as follows:
    Bluebells: Constancy.
    Chamomile: Energy in adversity.
Coral Honeysuckle: Color of my life. Color of my fate.
    Daisy: Innocence.
Stocks of Gillyflower: Bonds of affection. Lasting beauty.
    Hibiscus: Delicate beauty.
Sprig of Ivy with tendrils: Assiduous to please.
    Yellow Jasmine: Grace and elegance.
    Juniper: Succour. Protection.
Moss Rose Bud: Confession of love.
Buttercup: You are radiant with charms.
    Vervain: Enchantment.

If you would like a shorter list than that for your index, @Findswoman (and I totally understand if you do), I would consider the most important flowers in my story to be buttercup, chamomile, coral honeysuckle, hibiscus, and moss rose bud with the associated meanings mentioned above.

Thank you as always for hosting this amazing thread that gives me so much inspiration and joy@};-

That's fantastic, @devilinthedetails ! Thanks so much for sharing and contributing to this challenge; I've got your entry in the index now, where it is the first one that has come in. As to the list of flower prompts (and it's awesome that you used so many of them!), no trouble at all—I just used a spoiler tag. :)

Hey everybody! Looks like it's time for a new OTP challenge, wouldn't you say? Let's do this, shall we? :D

OTP Challenge #36: Tying the Knot

This is a pretty straightforward one, proposed by @Chyntuck (thank you so much, Chyn!):

And that's it! Tell us your couple's wedding/commitment/etc. story, in a story of any length and genre. As usual the soft deadline for this challenge is in eight (8) weeks: Friday, November 15, by 11:59 pm (23:59) PST. But ad hoc entries past the deadline are welcome too. All entries will count in the voting to be held at the beginning of next year unless you specify otherwise. And finally, I know you all know to adhere to the site TOS! :)
