    That's a strange one, that image, and it seems to be that we push the idea of translating the Canto to its Mandarin equivalent to try and say "Happy New Year" for CNY.

    Happy new year is more "Xīn nián kuài lè (新年快乐)". Gōng xǐ fā cái (恭喜 发财) is basically "congratulations, make a fortune". You would say it to close family and friends. "Xīn nián kuài lè" is what you'd say to as a formal comment, and you can shorten it or make it more colloquial with "Xīn nián hǎo" (新年好) aka "good new year".

    I would definitely say 恭喜 发财/Gōng xǐ fā cái to @Lord Vivec and @Darth Guy. Make that fortune bo

    One Chinese New Year, a friend of mine who was in London's Chinatown for the food and festivities fancied a massage. At the end of the massage he was offered a happy ending (to which he accepted.) Once the deed was done, on departure, he said the only words in Mandarin he knew to the masseuse "Gōng xǐ fā cá."

    Which when literally translated strangely makes sense.
