JCC 100 years since the Romanovs were executed

    Normally stuff like this would go in the “this day in history thread” but since the Romanovs are beloved by the JCC*, it seemed appropriate to make a thread about it.

    Here’s a long twitter thread recounting the circumstances leading up to the execution, and the events of the day:

    *After checking my notes, it seems the Romanovs are beloved by exactly one former JCCer. Oh well.

    After being around for the executions of the Ceausescus and Saddam Hussein, I almost admire those proto Soviets for the mercy of dispensing with a show trial. It's not maybe the best death ever, but the suffering was over relatively quickly. Not exactly with clinical precision, but still.

    Strangely enough I’ve still yet to actually watch it. Being non-Disney meant I was always biased against it.

    It's pretty good. Of course, it helps that it came out at a time when Disney was on...not such a great run. I prefer the animation to the likes of Hercules and Pocahontas.

    You should definitely check it out. The animation, voice acting, songs, and story line are very well done. I found it charming and entertaining back in 1997 for a non-Disney film.

    It's worth it just for the absolutely bizarre "The Russian Revolution was actually a magically compelled series of events orchestrated by ~zombie Rasputin~ with the help of his definitely-not-Iago talking bat sidekick and also his villain song is like this rocking offbrand Meatloaf number" stuff.
