WELCOME TO THE 2017 FAN FICTION AWARDS NOMINATIONS THREAD!

Nominations are due: Sunday 19 March 2017 at 23:59:59 PST.

Nominating for: All eras and categories.

In this thread you will find detailed instructions to nominate stories, authors and reviewers for 2017 Fanfic Awards. Please read this carefully, some award categories have peculiarities and it’s easy to mess things up :)

Please do NOT post your nominations in this thread and do NOT send them to me.
Send them by PM to The Golden Yoda following the procedure described below.

    ELIGIBILITY

Eligible stories and authors are listed in the LIST OF ELIGIBLE STORIES.
    • Only stories and authors listed in the abovementioned thread are eligible.
    • The only exception to this is the Best Series category, where it is acceptable to add to your nominations one or more stories that are not on the list.
    • Stories and authors that are not eligible in specific categories are indicated in the list.
For more details about eligibility rules, please see this post of the Complete Rule Book.

    WHO CAN NOMINATE?
    • Anyone is eligible to nominate, whether writer, reader or lurker. No need to sign up as in the past.
    • Anyone caught voting multiple times with a sock will be banned and will no longer eligible to participate in the awards in any way.
    • Lurker accounts will be verified by the mods to ascertain that they are not socks and nominations will not be counted if the account is deemed suspicious.
    • Writers may submit nominations like any other user.
    • Writers may not nominate themselves. This includes stories that they co-authored.
    GENERAL NOMINATION RULES
    1. You may nominate up to two stories in every category. This means zero, one or two.
    2. Similarly, you may nominate up to two authors and up to two reviewers in their respective categories.
    3. You may NOT nominate the same story in more than three categories.
    4. In the timeframe categories, your two nominations should be by different authors.
    5. In all other story categories, your two nominations cover at least two different eras, with eras in this case meaning Before, PT, OT, ST and Beyond as described in the list of eligible stories.
    6. In the Best New Author and Most Versatile Author categories, your two nominations should also cover at least two different eras, with eras in this case meaning Before, Saga and Beyond.
For more details about nominations and examples of how the era label rule works under items 6 and 7, please read this post of the Complete Rule Book.

    HOW TO NOMINATE

We have a snazzy spreadsheet to help you prepare your nominations that tells you if you broke rules 1, 2 and 3 above and indicates the era labels for all stories and authors. You can see it here. This link goes to a locked version of the spreadsheet; if you want to receive an editable one please request it by PM from The Golden Yoda.

Nominations MUST be submitted by PM only. You have two options to send in your nominations:

OPTION 1: You want to send your nominations on the spreadsheet.

    1) PM The Golden Yoda for your personalised, editable copy of the spreadsheet.
    2) Click here to read the category definitions. Please pay attention to the definitions in dark red as they can be a bit tricky.
    3) Follow the instructions in the spreadsheet to fill in your nominations.
    4) Reply to your PM convo with The Golden Yoda to say, “I’m done” :)

OPTION 2: You want to send your nominations in a text PM.

    1) Click here to read the category definitions. Please pay attention to the definitions in dark red as they can be a bit tricky.
    2) Click here to see the list of eligible stories, authors and reviewers and make your selection.
    3) Check that your selection complies with the rules!
    4) Open a PM convo with The Golden Yoda and type “2017 nominations” in the title bar.
    5) Copy-paste this post into your PM and fill in the details. You must provide all the details in every category for which you are nominating; don’t forget the links!
    6) Click “send” :)

If for one reason or another the volunteers think that you made a mistake in your nominations,
they will contact you by PM to request a clarification and/or ask you to correct it.

NOMINEES GOING TO THE VOTING ROUND

For details about how nominees going to the voting round will be determined, please read this post of the Complete Rule Book.

    CATEGORY DEFINITIONS

    Timeframe categories

Best Story in Before – The best story that takes place wholly or primarily before the beginning of TPM (in 33 BBY or earlier). Any story labelled [Before] in the List of Eligible Stories can be nominated for this category, even if it carries several era labels.

Best Story in PT – The best story that takes place wholly or primarily between the beginning of TPM and the beginning of SW: Rebels (from 32 BBY to 6 BBY). Any story labelled [PT] in the List of Eligible Stories can be nominated for this category, even if it carries several era labels.

Best Story in OT – The best story that takes place wholly or primarily between the beginning of SW: Rebels and the beginning of Bloodline in the New Canon continuity (from 5 BBY to 27 ABY), or until the end of RotJ in the Legends continuity (from 5 BBY to 4 ABY). Any story labelled [OT] in the List of Eligible Stories can be nominated for this category, even if it carries several era labels.

Best Story in ST – The best story that takes place wholly or primarily between the beginning of Bloodline (27 ABY) and the end of episode IX in the New Canon continuity. This also includes all New Canon stories that feature one or more of these characters in a prominent role, regardless of timeframe: Rey, Finn, Poe, BB-8, Kylo Ren, Hux, Phasma, Snoke, Maz Kanata and Lor San Tekka. Any story labelled [ST] in the List of Eligible Stories can be nominated for this category, even if it carries several era labels.

Best Story in Beyond – The best story that takes place wholly or primarily after the end of RotJ in the Legends continuity, or after the end of episode IX in the New Canon continuity. Any story labelled [Beyond] in the List of Eligible Stories can be nominated for this category, even if it carries several era labels.

    Storyline categories

Best Continuity-Compliant Story – A story that does not diverge from or contradict the established storyline (New Canon or Legends) in which it is written. Stories that aren’t blatantly AU and aren’t defined as AU by the author in the opening post or the title bar can be assumed to be canon-compliant.
Note: This is the category that used to be called ‘Best Canon’ in previous years.

Best Alternate Universe – A story that diverges from or contradicts the established storyline (New Canon or Legends) in which it is written. This is usually, but not always, indicated by the author in the opening post or the title bar.

Best Legends Story – A continuity-compliant or AU story that relies explicitly and primarily on Legends material (defined as EU material released before 25 April 2014) for its plot, characters and worldbuilding. Minor references to characters, planets, species, ships etc from the New Canon are acceptable.

Best New Canon Story – A continuity-compliant or AU story that does not make any substantial use of Legends material. Minor references to characters, planets, species, ships etc from Legends are acceptable.

Best New Canon/Legends Mash-Up – A story that combines explicitly and prominently elements from both the New Canon and Legends continuities.

    Length categories

Best One-Shot – A short story posted to the boards as a single entry (as a guideline, less than 5,000 words). This includes, but is not limited to, individual drabbles, poems, flash-fics, song-fics and vignettes.
    Notes:
    • One-post stories that far exceed the 5,000-word limit are eligible under Best Multi-Chapter Short Story, not under Best One-Shot.
    • Similarly, multi-chapter stories under the 5,000-word limit are eligible under Best Multi-Chapter Short Story, not under Best One-Shot.
Best Multi-Chapter Short Story– A story that can be read in a single sitting without being a marathon and that is broken down into chapters (as a guideline, less than 30,000 words).
Best Epic– An epic is a looooong story that requires a marathon of several hours, or a non-marathon of several days, to be read in its entirety (as a guideline, 30,000 words or more).

Best Series - A collection of two or more stories that are interconnected by their theme, storyline or characters.
    Notes:
    • For a series to be eligible, at least one of its component stories should have been posted or updated within the eligibility dates.
    • You may add to your series nomination(s) other stories that date back to 2015 or earlier, or were started in 2017.
    • You MUST list the individual stories that you view as forming a series, even if they are posted in the same thread. The only exception to this is drabble, poetry and flash-fic threads that could not be broken down into individual items for the List of Eligible Stories.
    • Stories that form a series may have been posted in the same thread or in different threads (or a combination thereof). ‘Archive’ threads where an author posts all his/her miscellaneous one-shots are not eligible as a whole, but a combination of stories from such a thread is acceptable if they are interconnected.
    • The stories constituting the series can be of any length, so anything between a series of drabbles or a series of epics is eligible under this category.
    • The stories constituting the series may be belong to the same era or to multiple eras.
    • A series authored by multiple writers is eligible under this category, as long as there is demonstrable evidence that the component stories are interconnected.
    • Individual stories that are part of a series thread are also eligible in other categories as standalones under the same conditions as any other story.
    • A series that won Best Series in the past is not eligible for it anymore, but any stories added by the author since s/he won the award are eligible as standalones.
    Genre categories

Best Action/Adventure – The best story in which the characters overcome challenges by means of fast-paced, adventurous activity.

Best Drama – The best story that centres around the protagonist(s) addressing tragic, reflective or otherwise serious issues that impact them on a personal level.

Best Humour – The best story which is comedic in nature by virtue of its characters, situations or dialogue, and whose intention is to provoke a reaction that may range from chuckles to ROFLs.

Best Romance – The best story that centres around the protagonist discovering, exploring and/or developing a strong romantic emotional bond with another character.

    Character categories

Best Interpretation of a Movie Character – The best/most faithful/most relevant portrayal in fanfic of any character that appears, however briefly, in any of the 8 SW movies (TPM, AotC, RotS, ANH, TESB, RotJ, TFA and RO).

Best Interpretation of an EU Character – The best/most faithful/most relevant portrayal in fanfic of any character that appears only in Expanded Universe material (New Canon or Legends, including the TV series). No movie characters are eligible under this category, however brief their appearance in the movies.

Best Development of a Game Character – This can be an established character from any SW board or video game, or an RPG character created by the author and transferred to fanfic.

Best Original Character – The best formed, most interesting and most compelling character that was created by an author.

Best Villain/Antagonist – The best formed, most interesting and most compelling character, established or original, who is all-around evil and/or stands in opposition to the main character of the story.

    Relationship categories

Best Established RelationshipAny relationship (familial, friendship, romantic, rivalry, etc) between two Canon/Legends characters that is established or strongly implied in New Canon or Legends material.
Note: This is the category that we used to call ‘Best Canon Relationship’ in previous years.

Best Original RelationshipAny relationship (familial, friendship, romantic, rivalry, etc) between OCs or between an established (from either New Canon or Legends) character and an OC. This also includes a relationship between two established characters that does not appear or is not strongly implied in Canon/Legends.

    Other categories

Best Author in Saga – The author whose work in PT and/or OT and/or ST consistently demonstrates a high degree of skill and creativity in their creation of memorable characters and settings, original plots, interesting themes, and overall depiction of the GFFA. Looks good, looks good. Very exciting to see this starting! :)

A couple questions, if I may:

    1. Of options 1 and 2 for sending in nominations, do you have a preferred option? As in, which of the two makes the counters' jobs easier? (I'm guessing option 1, the spreadsheet, but just thought I'd check.)

    2. Since the spreadsheet is being done in Google Docs (based on the sample I saw), does that mean that the email address attached to the sock will be getting an email notification each time one of the nominators updates something in it? If there's a way to turn those notifications off, you may want to, just to avoid being bombarded once people start filling in a little today, a little tomorrow, etc. But you may already have thought of that, so just disregard this if you have. :)

    Thanks so much!

Chyntuck, In the first post, under voting options 1, the link to Click Here to read the category definitions instructions is not enabled.

    Awesome work on this!

Findswoman We definitely prefer it if people send their noms with the spreadsheet! Not only does it mean less work for us :D but it also lessens the risk of making mistakes when we transfer the noms to our master workbook.

Re: the e-mail notifications, no problem -- it's an extra way for us to make sure we didn't type anything into the sheet by mistake while transferring the count to our workbook, which could happen all too easily.

divapilot Thank you :) I fixed it now.

Great job here. :D I am not good with Excel, so I'll use the old-fashioned PM way, but that's an awesome innovation. =D==D==D=

    Hey everyone,

A quick note about three storyline categories: Best Legends, Best New Canon and Best Mash-Up.

If you look at the definitions below, you'll see that these three categories are mutually exclusive. The same story cannot be both Legends and New Canon, both Legends and Mash-Up, both New Canon and Mash-Up. It's the first OR the second OR the third.
    To re-phrase the definitions above:
    • If a story combines lots of important elements from both continuities, it's a Mash-Up and nothing else.
    • If a story uses lots of Legends elements with only passing references to minor stuff from the New Canon, it's Legends and nothing else.
    • Everything else counts as New Canon.
(I'm sure that if we dig deep enough, we'll find a story that doesn't quite fit any of these definitions :p but I haven't found any so far. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.)

"Cross that bridge" is a...frightening idiom, to say the least. [face_skull] If I wake up in the middle of the night and find you on my window pane, I'll be extremely worried. I COULD BE THE NEXT TO BE TAKEN TO THE BRIDGE.

Official communiqué from Supreme Leader Snoke
    For immediate release

    Supreme Leader Snoke is nominating:
    • for Best Epic: Revenge of the Sith (self-explanatory)
    • for Best Canon: The Last Jedi (Kylo Ren will take care of him)
    • for Best AU: Return of the Jedi (the Jedi *ever* returning is a laughable concept)
    • for Best Romance: Attack of the Clones (because it led to the dark side)
    • for Most Headsplode Moment: When the Force went to sleep. Seriously?
    • for Best Author: himself, of course.
Any nominations submitted by citizens of the First Order are expected to comply with the above guidelines. Traitors will be punished!

    KEEP NOMINATING!

    Official communiqué from Master Yoda
    For immediate release

To remind all fanficcers of the following, Master Yoda wishes:
    • The deadline to submit nominations on Sunday is.
    • Verify your nominations the volunteers must. For this, time they need.
    • Great stories on the boards there are. Nominate them you should.
    • If you nominate, a cool “I nominated” badge you will receive, even if an Imperial you are.
Currently only 10 nominators we have. At least 15 we would like to reach.

Do or do not submit nominations. There is no try.

The kind people at the Golden Yodas? WHAT Golden Yodas?

It is we, the Golden Palpies, who count the nominations that comply with Supreme Leader Snoke's guidelines above. The Inquisitors are hunting everyone else :kylosaber:

Oh, and did we mention that we accept noms only at random hours that change every day? Who ever said this was supposed to be easy? [face_devil]

    --------------------

    (OOC)

Sith-I-5 It's actually both longer and shorter than last year. We have a 16-day nominations period this year as opposed to 10 days last year, but there were two nomination periods last year because we had the breakdown into eras. Makes sense? (Okay, I know, probably not, but it's not for lack of trying :p)

I think I did that too, in at least one place. But it did mean I got to know a new story or two, so that's a good thing! :D

And I have a T-shirt with Luke, Leia, and Vader's shadow that reads, "Looking for Love in Alderaan Places," so I loved that graphic. But don't worry, folks—any nom coming from any bona-fide JCF member is all right by us! :D

It's not the only way—if you prefer, you can also list your nominations in a response PM, just as was done last year. See under "Option 2" in this thread's first post. :)
