Probably not the time or the place, but I don’t see what the big deal about Sean Connery was?

His Bond’s were ok, but ever since he’s just played Sean Connery.

The man who would be king was good, I’ll give him that.

His Bonds were more than OK.
Outside of some Brosnan & Craig films, Connery's were the best.

He was awesome in The Untouchables, deserving on an Oscar.

He also could bring class & humour to a role. Look at The Rock, he's great in that.
And Last Crusade is great primarily because of him & the chemistry with Ford

The idea that a man hitting a woman is wrong did not emerge recently. Similarly, Connery had decades to repudiate his earlier views and chose not to do so. It's actually not hard to go through life without physically harming other people.

Yeah, it's wrong. It's just not particularly surprising.

That said, my father was born in the thirties and wasn't misogynistic or violent. Different upbringing, though.

I really wish he would have said yes to the offer to appear in Indy 4. Even if it was just a cameo at the wedding at the end, it would have been wonderful for him to tap Indy on the shoulder and say “Well done, Junya” one last time.

Did anybody ever actually confront him about it though? I mean even if he privately regretted the things he said, we probably shouldn't expect him to bring it up again himself unless someone mentioned it.

He didn't have much in the way of range. There were things you just didn't expect from a Connery performance: vulnerability, doubt, weakness. He had a very small wheelhouse of intense, overbearing, charismatic megalomaniacs. When given a role that really called for exactly that kind of performance, like Marko Ramius in The Hunt for Red October, he simply was the best you could get. He's also really excellent in The Untouchables.

But that's one of the reasons I rank Last Crusade as his best performance. It has all the usual narcissism and arrogance and charisma of a typical Connery character, but he's also often quite ineffectual and even comedic and, ultimately, he actually has vulnerability under all the bluster. And he nails it all. It's his most fully rounded performance.

There are movie stars who have charisma and star quality that are also incredibly skilled and versatile actors. Connery wasn't one of those in my opinion. He was a star with charisma and commanding presence. He wasn't the guy to go to if you wanted a nuanced performance or an emotionally vulnerable one. But in his wheelhouse? One of the greats.

It's been many, many years since I saw The Hill, but I remember thinking Connery had never been as good before or since.

I don't like The Last Crusade or at least iut is 3 out of 4 but I don't rank it low because of Connery. I felt he brought dimwit dad energy to the film which worked as expected.

Lifestyle wise, yes there are historical statement that carry disrepute on current ideology (granted the idea of hitting women has never ever been good to modern ideology) but after his last marriage there are no rumorus of inappropriate behaviour (both pre and post) and whilst Brosnan is my preferred Bond, I see no reason to HUNT for a reason to besmirch his name. That being said if there are legitimate reasons to pile on then go for it.

The big question forever remains - Could Sean Connery actually do other accents but refused to or was he just not capable?

That it isn't surprising shouldn't diminish our rejection of his behavior.

Name of the Rose is a movie of his that is simultaneously really obscure and really good. If you'd asked me back in the 80's who to cast as a Franciscan monk meets Sherlock Holmes the answer wouldn't have been Connery but he was really good in the part.

Try "The Offense", one of his lesser-known, and best, performances.
